And You Thought OJ's Lawyers Were Weasels

Haroon Rashid Aswat, one of the men who was trying to set up an al Qaeda training camp in Oregon, is fighting his court-ordered extradition to the US on the basis that he might be tortured. Many thanks to liberal imbeciles motivated by partisan politics, notably Senator Dick Durbin, who have so mangled the definition of torture that virtually anything now qualifies.

But that's not the outrageous part.

Read what Aswat's lawyer, Gareth Peirce, has to say:

“It shows the extent to which the United States is manipulating evidence and pressuring witnesses. All that is said about Haroon Aswat is that in 1999 he travelled to a farm in the US which was considering setting up a Muslim community and, after a few days, left. That’s it — that’s the evidence.”
Never mind that American James Ujaama, Aswat's accomplice has already confessed and agreed to testify against Aswat, all that was going on was planning for a "Muslim community". You know, like the Amish or the Mennonites.

If the Amish and Mennonites were into global terrorism.

Sigh

So a commenter sends this in from the trenches:

Pat Robertson thinks God struck Sharon for not keeping the territory intact.

Um...no. He thinks the Bible says that God will strike any Israeli PM that gives land for peace. A twisted interpretation to be sure, but not the same thing. Nice try at moral equivalence, though, given the post it was left on.

Palestinians are just as thankful about Sharon's condition as the Israelis were about Arafat's condition.

Once again, no. You see, the people who were thankful about Arafat's condition thought that maybe, just maybe, it might increase their chance of surviving a simple bus ride to the supermarket. The people thankful about Sharon's condition think that maybe, just maybe, it will increase a suicide bomber's chance at blowing up a bus on it's way to the supermarket.

Perhaps it's just human nature to hate your enemy so much that you rejoice when tragedy strikes.

Gee, thanks, now I have angst. I promise from now on to light a candle on the anniversary of their deaths in honor of the following:

Caligula

Mohammed

Vlad Tepes

Edward the Longshanks

King George III

Vladimir Lenin

Josef Stalin

Adolf Hitler

Chairman Mao

Pol Pot

Ho Chi Minh

Kim Il Sung*

And I promise to wear a black armband in honor of my sorrow when Osama is found with a .50 cal round in the skull, Saddam is swinging from the gallows, and Kim Jong Il's shadow is found on the irradiated remains of his presidential palace.

Because I see the light now. All men are not created equal. All men are created evil.

Pat Robertson's goofy Bible interpretation, well, that's no different than that PFLP joker's exhortations. The fact that Pat Robertson's followers aren't detonating themselves in a crowd of civilians is irrelevant.

As for the Israelis, how dare they show their hate by allowing their enemies, Arab Muslims, full citizenship, including voting rights, and seats in the Knesset. They're no different than the Palestinians, who allow no Jew to hold office, and routinely kill the members of rival factions.

Thank you, Dale the commenter, for showing me the shining light of the gray areas. more...

Clearing the Air, The War Is Not "Lost"

For almost a year now, I've maintained an irregular email correspondence with Sandy Shanks, an American who writes editorials for al-Jazeera. My first post about Shanks, questioning his motivation for collaborating with al-Jazeera, appeared only a couple of days after I started this blog. I've featured Shanks' columns in several posts in the months since.

It's become one of those relationships peculiar to the Internet era; people you've never laid eyes on, but feel that you "know". Not all of that correspondence has been "business"; we've exchanged recollections of personal histories and banter about sporting events. Sandy seems like the kind of guy I'd enjoy having a beer with.

But we all have those folks in our life who, though likable, have an embarrassing flaw or two. The friend who slurps his soup, or farts explosively in public. more...

Idiot of the Year

Well, we haven't even gotten a full week into 2006 and the Idiot of the Year has already reared his ugly head. There may be bigger idiots as the year goes on, but I certainly don't see how at this point.

This idiot makes the ACLU look almost tame by comparison as he attempts to fell the entire Catholic Church in one fatal blow. Luigi Cascioli of Italy has decided to try and force the Italian court system to prove that Jesus never existed.

"I started this lawsuit because I wanted to deal the final blow against the Church, the bearer of obscurantism and regression," Cascioli told Reuters.

Cascioli says Righi, and by extension the whole Church, broke two Italian laws. The first is "Abuso di Credulita Popolare" (Abuse of Popular Belief) meant to protect people against being swindled or conned. The second crime, he says, is "Sostituzione di Persona", or impersonation.

"The Church constructed Christ upon the personality of John of Gamala," Cascioli claimed, referring to the 1st century Jew who fought against the Roman army.

Now, I'm no lawyer, but I seem to see a TON of loopholes here. First and foremost being that even a large number of athiests admit that Jesus was a real person. They don't necessarily attribute any diety to Him, but they do admit his existence. Heck, even Muslims go that far. It would seem to me that you're going to have an extraordinarily hard time convincing a judge of ANY stripe to conclusively rule that Jesus never existed.

Secondly, you're going to have just as hard a time trying to find a judge that will label the entire Catholic Church as a giant "pyramid scheme." That's just ludicrous to begin with. The public fallout of such a decision would be disasterous. Not to mention the political hornet's nest you'd open up.

Yes, I know there have been specific churches that have been called up on charges of fraud and other such activities. I have never denied that there are some corrupt pastors who use God to make money. But I'd think if you're going to target an entire religion, you might want to start with one that everyone (except Tom Cruise) recognizes as a scam. Even L. Ron Hubbard admitted that Scientology is nothing but a joke.

At least the Italian court is attempting to do the right thing. According to the story, the judge had tried several times to dismiss the case, but only ends up getting tangled up in appeals from the plaintiff. I'm fairly sure of the outcome of this idiot's case, but I'll have to follow the story closely anyway to make sure.

Once Again, Should We Be Surprised?

AP via Fox News

But a radical Palestinian leader in Damascus, the Syrian capital, called Sharon's health crisis a gift from God. We say it frankly that God is great and is able to exact revenge on this butcher. ... We thank God for this gift he presented to us on this new year," Ahmed Jibril, leader of the Syrian-backed faction Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, a small radical group, told the Associated Press.

Dear Mr. Ahmed Jibril,

One elderly man has an all too common elderly man stroke.

Tens of thousands of your fellow Muslims have tragically perished recently in earthquakes and tsumanis.

Just who is God taking revenge on here?

I'm sorry if that seems harsh, I realize you only speak for a "small band of radicals" but really, I fear you've lost sight of the bigger picture.

I would never be so arrogant as to think that I know the mind of God, but based on the evidence He provides, I would be willing to hazard a guess that He may not be too happy with your particular brand of monotheism at this point in history.

Sincerely,

Vinnie

Fired NSA Analyst Offers To Testify To Congress

From the Washington Times via The Drudge Report:

A former National Security Agency official wants to tell Congress about electronic intelligence programs that he asserts were carried out illegally by the NSA and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Russ Tice, a whistleblower who was dismissed from the NSA last year, stated in letters to the House and Senate intelligence committees that he is prepared to testify about highly classified Special Access Programs, or SAPs, that were improperly carried out by both the NSA and the DIA.

Tice was fired in May, 2005. He reportedly suspected that a co-worker was a Chinese spy. When Tice reiterated his suspicions two years after the initial investigation, his security clearance was pulled following a psychiatric evaluation.

Tice reportedly sent letters to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees in mid-December.

Cocktails in Space

The Russians want to make liquor available to the crew of the International Space Station.

"They fly in orbit for half a year and perform a heavy workload, especially during exhausting space walks when they shed several kilos in weight over a few hours," said a source in the Russian medical support teams for the manned space program. "Many people think a small ration of alcohol would help restore their strength."
Why not? It always helps me. In fact, I remember one time years ago that I had my strength restored to the point where I was strong enough to lift a car. Boy, it's a good thing someone stopped me because I might have accidently dropped it.

Ancient Global Warming Discovered

From Breitbart.com via The Drudge Report:

An extraordinary burst of global warming that occurred around 55 million years ago dramatically reversed Earth's pattern of ocean currents, a finding that strengthens modern-day concern about climate change, a study says.

The big event, the Palaeocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), saw the planet's surface temperature rise by between five and eight degrees C (nine and 16.2 F) in a very short time, unleashing climate shifts that endured tens of thousands of years.

But wait. Mankind was certainly not around 55 million years ago, and as we know from environmental activists, only evil, greedy capitalists cause global warming.
What unleashed the PETM is unclear. Most fingers of blame point to volcanic eruptions that disgorged gigatonnes of carbon dioxide, or coastal reservoirs of methane gas, sealed by icy soil, that were breached by warmer temperatures or receding seas.
You know, I could have sworn that Rush Limbaugh was excoriated as a Neanderthal for suggesting that volcanoes could cause global warming.

Indian Director To Glorify Suicide Bombers

Indian moviemaker Mahesh Bhatt plans to film "Suicide Bomber", starring his own son as a confused young man running away from an unsuccessful attempt in the 7/7 attacks.

From Reuters:

"Muslims are demonized by the western nations especially after the so-called war on terror. The gulf between Muslims and the rest of the world is widening," Bhatt said.

"The film will be an attempt to clarify Islam is not demonic and to delve into the mind of a young suicide bomber to try to find out what drives him to reject life for a violent death."

This is not a big mystery. What drives suicide bombers is indoctrination into the cult of violence espoused by radical Islam. Oh yeah, also personal greed and lust (72 virgins, anyone?).

Bhatt doesn't explain how western media are "demonizing" Islam while maintaining a stout embargo on images from the 9/11 attacks.

Bhatt should research the cult of Kali, which murdered thousands of innocent victims before being exterminated by the British in the nineteenth century. If Bhatt and other so-called moderate Muslims don't wake up, and stop seeking excuses for the barbarians sheltering within their own religion, history could repeat itself.

Taliban Beheads Teacher.

Why you ask? Because he educated girls of course.

Seattlepi : KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Taliban militants beheaded a teacher in a central Afghan town while his wife and eight children watched, officials said Wednesday, describing the latest in a string of attacks targeting educators at schools where girls study. Four men stabbed Malim Abdul Habib eight times late Tuesday before decapitating him in the courtyard of his home in Qalat, said Ali Khail, a spokesman for the provincial government of Zabul, where the attack took place.

Oh in front of his children. What a pious considerate bunch these Taliban.

Zabul province's education director, Nabi Khushal, blamed Taliban rebels for the killing. "Only the Taliban are against girls being educated," he said. "The Taliban often attack our teachers and beat them. But this is the first time one has been killed in this province." Cleric Sayed Omer Munib, a member of the nation's top Islamic council, said there was no justification in Islam's holy book, the Quran, to prevent girls from studying. "Nowhere in the Quran does it say that girls do not have the right to education," he said. "It says that 'people should be educated.' This means girls, too."

How brave of the Taliban to murder a teacher of girls. Typical of men who cannot see the added value an educated woman brings. Probably illiterate themselves and thatÂ’s why they follow a one-eyed idiot.

Only One Survivor in W.Va. Coal Mine Explosion

(Tallmansville, West Virginia) Contrary to earlier reports that twelve miners survived, officials are reporting that there is only one survivor.

From NBC4i.com:

Mine company officials have confirmed that only one of the 13 miners who hadn't been heard from since an early Monday morning explosion at an Upshur County, W.Va., mine survived the ordeal.

Ben Hatfield, CEO of Sago Mine owner International Coal Group, told reporters that there was a "miscommunication" earlier when rescuers in the mine that had indicated all 12 miners were alive.

Hatfield said the initial report from the rescue team to the command center indicated multiple survivors, but that information was incorrect.

The survivor, 27-year-old Randal L. McCloy, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, W.Va. McCloy is listed in critical condition early Wednesday morning.

Condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

Europeans Selling Iranians Parts For Nuke Missiles

Scheming with Saddam and skimming profits from the oil-for-food program was bad enough. According to the Guardian (admittedly not the most reliable source) the mad mullahs of Iran have been shopping in Europe for nuclear missile parts...and finding sellers.

From the Guardian:

The Iranian government has been successfully scouring Europe for the sophisticated equipment needed to develop a nuclear bomb, according to the latest western intelligence assessment of the country's weapons programmes.
Scientists in Tehran are also shopping for parts for a ballistic missile capable of reaching Europe, with "import requests and acquisitions ... registered almost daily", the report seen by the Guardian concludes.

British Sex-For-Visas Scandal

(London) Authorities have initiated an investigation into an alleged sex-for-visas scam by British immigration officials.

From Sky.com:

A former worker at an immigration centre in Croydon told The Sun that women were allowed to stay in the UK in return for sex.

Anthony Pamnani, 23, said he quit after four years in disgust at the goings-on.

He said "ugly" applicants were often made to queue for hours while those considered good-looking would be seen straight away.

The whistleblower also told the paper that vital security checks on immigrants were not carried out.

Since this story has hit the newspapers and involves alleged inadequate security screening, the public will likely demand a comprehensive review of the entire immigration department. I believe it should be simple to verify the accuracy of specific claims. However, if true, it may be more difficult to determine how widespread the corruption is and how long it's been occurring.

It will be interesting to see how the British public reacts if it's found that people are discriminated against because they're ugly.

Under Tallmansville

Time passes. Listen. Time passes.

Come closer now.

Only you can hear the houses sleeping in the streets in the slow deep salt and silent black, bandaged night. Only you can see, in the blinded bedrooms, the coms and petticoats over the chairs, the jugs and basins, the glasses of teeth, Thou Shalt Not on the wall, and the yellowing dickybird-watching pictures of the dead. Only you can hear and see, behind the eyes of the sleepers, the movements and countries and mazes and colours and dismays and rainbows and tunes and wishes and flight and fall and despairs and big seas of their dreams.

From where you are, you can hear their dreams.

Not Playing with IED Makers Anymore

This may be a little old news but this press release from US Central Command is quite telling about how terrorists planting IEDs are dealt with these days:

AIR SUPPORT PREEMPTS POSSIBLE IED EMPLACEMENT (USCENTCOM):

TIKRIT, Iraq - Coalition forces reconnaissance aircraft observed three men suspected of emplacing an improvised explosive device digging in a road near Bayji after 9:00 p.m. on Jan.2, prompting a military response against them.

An unmanned aerial vehicle from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division observed the would-be attackers as they dug a hole following the common pattern of road-side bomb emplacement. The individuals were assessed as posing a threat to Iraqi civilians and coalition forces, and the location of the three men was relayed to close air support pilots.

The individuals left the road site and were followed from the air to a nearby building. Coalition forces employed precision guided munitions on the structure.

Local Iraqi police were the first authorities at the scene to conduct post-event response.

Good ridance.

Bad Moon On The Risen

James Risen, the New York Times reporter who willfully damaged national security interests by reporting on NSA intercepts of al Qaeda cellphone and email communications with American citizens, has released his new book to take financial advantage of the furor surrounding the NYT story. Here's how Time describes the book, State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration:

Risen's chief target is the CIA, where, he argues, institutional dysfunction and feckless leadership after 9/11 led to intelligence breakdowns that continue to haunt the U.S. Though much of State of War covers ground that is broadly familiar, the book is punctuated with a wealth of previously unreported tidbits about covert meetings, aborted CIA operations and Oval Office outbursts. The result is a brisk, if dispiriting, chronicle of how, since 9/11, the "most covert tools of national-security policy have been misused."
Here's a newflash for Risen, who shouldn't need to have it pointed out: there have been no, zero, nada, zilch attacks on the US since 9/11. That, in and of itself, invalidates the thesis of Risen's potboiler.

It's almost possible to respect a person who betrays this country because he is motivated by ideology. At least that can indicate noble intent, if flawed reasoning. But who can have any respect for someone who puts his countrymen at risk for the sake of personal enrichment?

Washington Resolutions

Everyone makes New Year's Resolutions (except me). This year I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the resolutions made by some of our more esteemed politicians. Feel free to add as necessary.

John McCain - I resolve that in 2006 I will make up my mind on an issue. I'm not sure which issue yet.
Nancy Pelosi - I resolve that in 2006 I will not get any more botox treatments
Dick Durbin - I resolve that in 2006 I will give up my Taliban membership
President Bush - I resolve that in 2006 I will act like a true fiscal conservative and not let Congress run wild
John Murtha - I resolve that in 2006 I will not try to make everyone think I'm a military genius just because I've been in the Marines
John Edwards - I resolve that in 2006 I will not spend 3/4 of my time on my hair
Harry Reid - I resolve to put up a bigger searchlight. Obviously the voters didn't see the last one.
Ted Kennedy - I resolve to quit drinking. No, that would be too hard. I resolve to not drown anyone else. Maybe. As long as I'm not driving drunk.
Barbara Boxer - I resolve to eliminate men from the planet in 2006
Dianne Fienstein - I resolve to marry Barbar Boxer in 2006
John Kerry - I resolve that in 2006 I will not get any more botox treatments. Or go to any more tanning beds.
Dick Cheney - I resolve not to talk so much in 2006.
Karl Rove - I resolve to utterly destroy the Democratic party in 2006. Or in 2008 if we fail this year.

Microsoft Windows Vulnerable To 'Huge' Virus Threat

Russian Programmer Develops Unofficial Fix

All versions of Microsoft Windows are now thought to be vulnerable to viruses and spyware exploiting Windows Metafile (WMF) files.

From Financial Times via The Drudge Report:

The flaw, which allows hackers to infect computers using programs maliciously inserted into seemingly innocuous image files, was first discovered last week. But the potential for damaging attacks increased dramatically at the weekend after a group of computer hackers published the source code they used to exploit it. Unlike most attacks, which require victims to download or execute a suspect file, the new vulnerability makes it possible for users to infect their computers with spyware or a virus simply by viewing a web page, e-mail or instant message that contains a contaminated image.

“We haven’t seen anything that bad yet, but multiple individuals and groups are exploiting this vulnerability,” Mr Hyppönen said. He said that every Windows system shipped since 1990 contained the flaw.

...some security experts were urging system administrators to take the unusual step of installing an unofficial patch created at the weekend by Ilfak Guilfanov, a Russian computer programmer.

The Russian patch is available here. Guilfanov recommends uninstalling it as soon as Microsoft gets off the dime and offers their own patch. I can't vouch for the patch. Most corporate system administrators will not use unofficial patches. If you install it, read everything carefully and proceed at your own risk.
