Here are some images from Houston traffic cams:

I'm curious if New Orleans looked anything like this before Katrina hit. If you have pictures or information about Houston traffic please drop me a line.

She's still a category five. NOAA's latest update states:
REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS REMAIN NEAR 175 MPH...280 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. THIS MAKES RITA A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 70 MILES...110 KM... FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 185 MILES...295 KM.
THE LATEST MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE ESTIMATED FROM REPORTS BY THE HURRICANE HUNTER IS 897 MB...26.49 INCHES. THIS MEANS RITA IS THE THIRD MOST INTENSE HURRICANE IN TERMS OF PRESSURE IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN.

I'm just curious though, since cutting the pork out of federal and state budgets isn't going to be enough to cover all the Katrina (and impending Rita) repair and rebuild costs then what good is it to donate to The Salvation Army? Seriously, what good is my measly donation going to do then? I personally can't bankroll The Salvation Army's entire relief effort so why should I donate?
I'll tell you why; every little bit helps. Getting the pork out of our budgets might not cover the costs to repair all the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, but every little bit helps.

Let me anticipate some scoffing here: I heard of Jayna Davis and her pursuit of this story before 9/11. It's not just some Iraq war thing. This has been in the works a long time and I hope it's worth it.
I'm not saying this is true, only that it sounds like Davis has done enough work to raise this idea above the deep muck of half-baked ideas about 4-19, into something that's worth looking into. Remember that the FBI only recently uncovered detonators underneath Terry Nichols' old house.
Why were they still looking?
H/T to Okie on the Lam, a fine blog that makes me homesick.

Here is an eBay auction with a novel twist. They are auctioning off a signed copy of George Galloway's book. 100% of the proceeds will be given to American Snipers, and will be used to help our boys kill some of George Galloway's 'freedom fighters' before they blow up some more kids waiting for candy.
P.S.--Ever wonder what would happen if George Galloway were to meet the brave and noble leader of the 'resistance' in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi? (NSFW) more...

According to SurveyUSA the Republican governors who haven't been pointing fingers and have been busy from day one in recovery relief (as opposed to political posturing) seem to be fairing a helluva lot better, as far as approval rating, than the Democratic governor of Louisiana.
| Governor | Party & State | 15 Aug 05 | 19 Sep 05 |
| Governor Kathleen Blanco | D-LA | 50% | 41% |
| Governor Haley Barbour | R-MS | 43% | 58% |
| Governor Bob Riley | R-AL | 46% | 58% |
| Governor Rick Perry | R-TX | 39% | 49% |
As usual, actions speak louder than words.

British officials are convinced that Iran is implicated in the upsurge in violence and suspect it may be connected to BritainÂ’s hardening position against TehranÂ’s nuclear programme. Britain has been working closely with Iran over the past two years to reach a compromise. But with the victory last month of the hawkish President Ahmadinejad, Iran has hardened its position.
Sadr's Mahdi Army has killed several British soldiers now, although their leader, a fellow named Fartusi, has been captured.
Rusty linked to an NRO article about Iran and Sadr a while back that predicted exactly this kind of pressure: if the Allies made any move toward Iran's nukes, Iran would unleash the Shiite insurgency against our troops in Iraq:
Sadr is accused of being a pawn of TehranÂ’s mullahs as well, helping them subvert the progress of Iraqi democracy. If military action is taken against IranÂ’s nuclear weapons program, SadrÂ’s Al-Mahdi militia could counterattack within Iraq.
Maybe just the threat of military action was enough to stir up Iran's insurgents. While it sounds like the arrest of this Fartusi is an important first step, Sadr himself is holding the Mahdi together. There are already warrants out for his arrest, as the article points out. Why are we waiting?

From ABC Online:
A senior US official says North Korea's claim is not in line with the deal signed in Beijing.Given North Korea's predictable lack of resolve in complying with negotiated commitments, it's hard to understand why the media has an orgasm every time an agreement is signed. By now, one would think the MSM would just shrug and frown like the rest of us."This was obviously not the agreement they signed and we will see what the coming weeks bring," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
US officials have declined to comment more broadly on Pyongyang's declarations, which appeared to undermine a much-feted set of principles agreed upon earlier in Beijing.
