2 Why don't you guys ease up on Dan Rather and talk about real substance? This country is screwed thanks to the fact that no one cares about issues. All they want to do is tear down other people. You know what? CBS screwed up, but just about everyone ignored the fact that the SUBSTANCE of the story was correct. Bush did get special favors to get into the Guard. I have no idea why the memos were faked. But Bush leapfrogged over countless other people to get one of only a few spots in what was called the "Champagne Unit," because it contained many sons of privelege. There's not much doubt Bush got into the Guard by special favor of his father. And those memos were just one of multiple sources. WHY ARE PEOPLE OBSESSING ABOUT THOSE MEMOS rather than asking real questions? CBS messed up, but you don't know what messed up is until you witness 8 years of the most dangerous, most un-American president in history. He has thrown away the foreign policy used by everyone from George Washington to Bill Clinton in order to pursue the foreign policy project of a bunch of nutcases. And his domestic policy consists of trying to hack down the barrier between church and state that our founding fathers worked so hard to put in place. And as for the quote above, why didn't you mention that Dan Rather editorialized on air that he didn't think this should turn into a protracted legal battle, that Americans would simply prefer a concession. Why no mention of this? Most of what CBS reports is true. You guys prefer to run away from the facts by labeling these guys as liberals or Bush-haters so that you don't have to deal with the countless failures of Bush's first term. But these failures will creep up to us one day. You'll have to tell your grandchildren you voted for this moron. This isn't about GEORGE W. BUSH. He is not a God. This is about America. I wish people would wake up and start paying attention rather than just having so much fun finding ways to rationalize why Bush's failure of a presidency is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

3 Laura, you might have gotten confused because it seems your sense of humor is a little underdeveloped. Anyway, here is a sigularly obvious cue to you that this particular thread is not going to be a in depth, multi-faceted exploration of Bush's Presidency: it's based on a still frame of a Dan Rather broadcast where the picture behind him looks like Bush making a lewd gesture. One explanation for your confusion may be that your poorly reasoned arguments based on incorrect facts get bitch-slapped/Kerry-slapped on threads with more serious designs. So you pick on the little threads just trying bring a little joy into the world at the expense of yet another emperor found lacking in clothes. I don't know, could be Bush (re-elected by a record setting popular vote, and first pres. since 1936 to be re-elected with gains for his party in both the House and the Senate) or could be Rather (I'd rather not go there.) The Army of Ansar al-Sunna posted the videotaped murder of an Iraqi Army officer today. The victim's name was Major Hussein Shunun and the terrorists claim that he was kidnapped in Mosul several days ago. As is their usual MO, the terrorists said the victim 'confessed' to 'collaborating' with the enemy and warned that any one who backed the 'crusader occupation forces' would be murdered in a similar fashion. So-called 'collaboraters' are routinely murdered in the Palestinian territories, in Chechnya, and in Kashmir.

UPDATE: I have obtained the video and it is gruesome. Images from the video are posted here. To the right is a still I captured right before the bastards murder Shunun. Graphic images are below. You can download the video at the Terrorist Media website, which is an essential resource for tracking terrorist propaganda films. The site is in need of donations, if you can spare some change.

Chad at In the Bullpen tipped me on this, and also noted four Jordanian truck drivers have also been taken hostage. The Army of Ansar al-Sunnah has not claimed responsibility, but it is possible they were behind the act. However, since the drivers were captured in Ramadi, it seems unlikely. The Army of Ansar al-Sunnah has generally limited it's terrorist activities to areas in the north. Ramadi is located just west of Baghdad in the Sunni triangle. It is more likeley that these hostages will be held for ransom, like dozens of others before them. more...

7 Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm really tired of listening to this ill-informed analysis. F**k you, terrorists? What are you talking about? Bin Laden is the guy who killed 3000 innocent Americans on 9/11, not Saddam Hussein. We pursued a guy who had not been supporting terrorism against America. A recent poll showed that 62% of Republicans believe that Saddam had something to do with the 9/11 attacks. But please, people, do the research. Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. The policy to attack Iraq was created in the 90's by people like Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz, who have great influence over the current administration. For instance, they wrote a letter to Clinton in 1998 urging Clinton to topple Saddam -- and terrorism was not a reason. (Link: http://www.newamericancentury.org/iraqclintonletter.htm ). There is only one way a person can get away with saying that Bush is nailing the terrorists. And that's if you listen to Bush campaign spin. Even Bush's own State Department acknowledged that terrorism around the world is increasing and that anti-American anger has reached "shocking levels." The only reason they admitted that is because Colin Powell tries to be a decent and honest man, although he did slip up and embarrass himself during his UN presentation. In a second term, we will hear even more skewed statistics, and even more exaggerations about Bush's success than we heard last term. And last term we heard enough of it to convince enough Republicans that Bush is now an eight-year president -- completely embarrassing for a man whose policies have been abject failures. Bush has the worst jobs record of any president since the Great Depression. Even during those rare months Bush has a supposedly good jobs showing, job growth barely outpaces population growth and overall, it has not. Clinton created more than 20 million jobs. Bush's fiscal policy is a disaster. You can't cut taxes on the rich at the same time you're going to war, particularly if you already have huge deficits! This is utter, irresponsible insanity. But how many people actually pay attention to stuff like this? Most people like Bush because they identify with him. He's a good Christian, a nice, honest man. Great. That doesn't make him special. And it doesn't make him qualified to lead the free world. Bush has failed time and again, and America has embarrassed itself by reelecting him anyway. Today, I am ashamed to be an American. I know we can do better than this. We don't have to bully the world. That's unproductive. America has always tried to set a positive example for the world, not bludgeon it. Bush threw away more than two centuries of American foreign policy, and for what? We removed a guy who Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice said in 2001 was not very dangerous, who nuclear inspectors before the invasion confirmed had no nuclear program, and who terrorism experts have long known was not collaborating with al-Qaeda and was not involved in terrorism against America. The problem is that there are so many people who want to believe what the president says, that he's strong on terrorism and taking the fight to our enemies. What he's really doing is beginning a process of American self-destruction, and I can only pray that the damage he does in his second term is somehow limited -- though how it will be I don't know since Republicans will control Congress, the Senate, and the Supreme Court, and soon have a radical Supreme Court on their side. It isn't enough to support someone just because he's a Republican. Democracy is pointless if we don't actually analyze a candidate and put him through the ringer. Republicans didn't do this, and I'm angry at every single person who cared more about supporting George W. Bush than they did about honestly reflecting about what is best for this country. Bush came into office in 2001 with almost no grasp of foreign policy. Brent Scowcroft, HW Bush's national security advisor, said W Bush wasn't comfortable with foreign policy. Richard Perle, who designed much of the Iraq war, said Bush "didn't know very much." The problem wasn't just foreign policy. Paul O'Neill, Bush's former Treasury Secretary, said Bush didn't understand economics. And if you've heard Bush speak about either economics or foreign policy, it really comes as no surprise that he doesn't understand them. Immediately before 9/11, Bush spent almost all of a month and a half on vacation. We've all heard about Richard Clarke's complaints. But Clarke is just the tip of the iceberg. Former counterterrorism director Rand Beers said the Bush administration had no clue about terrorism ( even after 9/11. Former FBI terrorism director Dale Watson said he almost fell out of his chair when he saw Ashcroft's planning guidance for 2001 because Ashcroft had removed all of Janet Reno's bulletpoints for terrorism. The Pentagon hadn't even FILLED its counterterrorism position by 9/11; the leadership there was concentrating on finding a way to invade Iraq. I know Americans are concerned about terrorism. But come on, people. Talking about terrorism and waging a successful campaign against it are not one and the same. Bush has the bluster and the confidence. He just doesn't have the policy, and it saddens me that the first two seem to be enough to win an election these days. Bush's energy policy is terrible, and endangers national security. We needed a fresh start. Now we won't get it for at least four years, further endangering our long-term security. Americans are losing healthcare coverage at an alarming rate, but now we can't fix the problem for at least another four years. Bush will continue to try press for his "tax cuts" for the wealthy. Because we are in deep deficits, however, these are not tax cuts so much as they are loans from the middle class of the future (our kids) to give handouts to the wealthiest Americans of today. In the middle of an expensive campaign against terrorism, should this really be our priority? What are we doing? Bush looks at the world ideologically: tax cuts are correct, period. But the world just isn't that simple, and I PROMISE you that such naivete will DESTROY America. Empires fall, you know, and we cannot get by on this sort of crude, myopic policy. It will come back to kick us in the rear. By then, the memories of your Nov. 2, 2004 celebrations of a Bush win will have long faded, and perhaps you'll realize the dangers in caring more about a single politician than about openly seeking what is best for the country. Hopefully by then it will not be too late.

As for Zarqawi, the Bush administration had a chance to bomb his camp before the war and decided not to, because it would have undermined a (supposed) rationale for war. Great. He wasn't in Saddam's part of Iraq, by the way. Before the war, Zarqawi was based in the Kurdish part, friendly to the US. Also, he wasn't aligned with al-Qaeda nor focusing on the US until AFTER we invaded Iraq. If you love creating enemies unnecessarily, you definitely voted for the right man. And if you want to render the UN useless, don't come crying to me when the world turns back into the chaotic all-for-one-and-one-for-all environment it was until a few decades ago. Kerry's own plan involved controlled spending, rolling back Bush's unaffordable tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans, and even a modest tax cut on the middle class. If you think Bush is a fiscal conservative, think again. As Rush Limbaugh said, Bush has "outspent Clinton" -- and by a lot. The military is wrong? Did I say the military is wrong? No, the American military is the greatest in the world. It's our leadership that isn't doing it justice. The suicide rate in Iraq is higher than it was during the Vietnam war. Morale is terrible, and it's BEEN terrible for a long time. The war plan was completely inadequate. They sent people over there without planning for a long occupation, even though a long occupation is precisely what many outside analysts had anticipated. They didn't give them the proper body armor, either personal body armor or armor for their vehicles. If they were going to go in, they needed far more troops. All the looting, the prisoner abuse scandal, the terrible security -- almost all of that was preventable. But of course, the timing and variety of war was absolutely wrong from the beginning. The UN inspections were working great; and if we went in, we should have done so patiently and with the proper alliances. Behind the scenes, even France said it would participate under certain conditions; we just didn't have any patience. The war has completely counteracted any possible benefits from any campaign against terrorism. It was a complete and total mistake. Even if the Iraqis get a democracy, there's a right way and a wrong way to go about things. This was the wrong way, and we are paying a huge price for our leadership's incompetence. As for reducing terrorism, this campaign cannot be a military-focused campaign. Al-Qaeda is ALL OVER THE WORLD. As of 9/11, it was present in 45 nations. Iraq was not one of them, but today it's one of the hubs and prime recruiting areas. Bush ridicules using law enforcement to go after terrorists. Guess what? Law enforcement is what has done the most damage against al-Qaeda, weeding out members and disrupting financial networks. If you want to bomb 50 countries, you may get a lot of great fireworks, but you sure as h**l won't solve the terrorism problem. That's exactly what we're seeing now. Bush isn't solving s**t. But he invades a country and bombs away, and then his campaign team applies the spin, and then guys like some of you eagerly eat it all up. We need to shore up our homeland security. We haven't done nearly as much as some experts have recommended; instead we're spending $5 billion a month in Iraq. We also need to spend more money on diplomacy. The State Department says it doesn't have enough money to counteract the "shocking levels" of anger the war has created in the Middle East. Those angry kids and teens are tomorrow's terrorists, and we barely seem to care. Just bomb the f88k out of everyone, as the earlier poster seems to want to do. That's fantastic. Another thing we really need to do is to start pouring BILLIONS of dollars -- yes, billions, just like we're now spending in Iraq -- into developing fuel cell technology and other alternative fuel technology, so that we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Economy-wise, we need to provide more intelligent stimulus. Simplistic tax cuts for the rich are passe. There are far more intelligent and effective ways to stimulate the economy -- providing specific incentives to foster growth, rather than just putting more money into some billionarie's pocket. I'm NOT making a Robin Hood argument, so don't even try it. I'm making a common-sense argument. If you want me to talk about ideas, I can give you ideas all day. It hobbled our economy; has turned our environment into a cash cow for its buddies; seems willing to drain the world's oil reserves; and has alienated some of our allies. It has failed to understand that "liberty" and "democracy" may have very different meanings to those societies which have been seperated from the West for centuries, and who have lived under tyrannies supported by us for generations. Despite the separation of Church and State in our Constitution, the Administration is trying to impose a morality based on a religious outlook not shared by all of us. It has tarnished our national soul, and our global role as the model of a moral society, by adopting a policy of pre-emptive war against villainous but unthreatening regime, while at the same time failing to vigorously pursue our true enemies. The insistence on "staying the course", when that course has repeatedly been shown to have failed, is not laudable determination but pig-headedness.

My Prediction

And just to make sure that the reader doesn't confuse me with Rusty, this is Demosophist's prediction. Dr. Rusty probably doesn't agree with Dr. Demosophist on this.

Alas, I think George W. Bush is going to lose. My primary reasoning is that his campaigning abilities sort of mirror his statesmanship. He had (by my count) two late golden opportunities to break this election wide open (al Qaqaa, and the Bin Laden threat to US States) and wasn't sufficiently nimble to take advantage of either. So this prediction really has nothing to do with the polls. I'll say later why I think this mirrors his statecraft, and how that plays into his implementation of the "peace through democracy and prosperity" paradigm, but I think he failed the test. more...

New Prediction: Electoral Vote Tie!!

Ok, call it a political-scientist's wet dream, but I just calls it likes I sees it. The Electoral Vote will be a tie!! Something that has not happened since the election of 1800, and in that election the tie was a mistake that resulted from a Constitutional flaw. This could get interesting....am I the only one out there who now thinks this has gone from a possible scenario to a likely scenario?

UPDATE: In case of a tie, the decision goes to the House of Representatives. The interesting catch is that each state gets a single vote in choosing the President in this case. The Republicans have a 12 seat majority in the House, but that would not automatically translate into a victory for Bush. Why? Again, each state gets one vote. Here's a question for my readers, which I don't know the answer to: How many state delegations to the US House of Representatives have more Republicans than Democrats? The Constitution does not clarify how the state delegations would decide which person to vote for, but presumably each delegation would meet by themselves and vote amongst themselves.

The Senate would then get to choose the VP, and since the Republicans have an advantage, you have a Cheney victory.

Steve over at Poli-blog makes some good observations in his last Toast-o-Meter. Looking around at the predictions, I'd say I'm the only one that really thinks the 269-269 scenario is likely. This roundup of roundups has no one else predicting it this way.

UPDATE: Just learned via reader Laura and from Digger that the threat to kill Hassan was much more specific than earlier noted. The terrorists have threatened to turn Hassan over to Zarqawi for beheading within 48 hours if their demands are not met. Call it death by Zarqawi.

6 Ireland Online (Hassan was born in Ireland) is claiming the "condition" is that she fainted while pleading for her life and then the terrorists through water on her. Why Al-Jazeera wouldn't air that is beyond me, but I'm guessing it has to do with them looking bad by pushing some old lady around (I guess beheading isn't as offensive).

Poll Watching: Voter Intimidation?

Well, I've voted. It's now up to history. But the circumstances of my experience led me to pontificate a bit on the accusations of voter intimidation that have been eminating from the mainstream Democratic activists. (I posted a comment about this on my home blog, but decided to turn the comment into a longer post because the topic seems to have acquired gravitas that I would not have expected a week ago.)

I don't know where the idea came from that poll watching was invented by Republicans to intimidate Democrats, but the accusation manifests a lot more heat than light. I worked for a number of years as a Democratic Party campaign organizer, and it was always pretty standard practice to do a stint as a poll watcher on election day. As soon as you finished a few tedious hours at the polling place, you went to the "after" party and waited with your fellow activists for the returns to come in. The idea was simply to challenge voters whose bonafides looked suspicious (wrong address, name change, etc.) and the government poll worker would then check the name, or ask for further identification. Normally a check was done on the spot, but nowadays the person who is challenged just fills out a provisional ballot and, if necessary, the check is done later. A very good idea. more...

I asked every single full-time faculty member of my department who they voted for. Here are the shocking results.

Kerry=9

Bush=2

No vote or declined to state=2

Among the nine Kerry voters, seven say they would have preferred to vote for Ralph Nader. Of the two Bush supporters, one is an untenured political-scientist (wink-wink) and the other is a Full Professor of History with a specialty in military history. One Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice did not vote on prinicple, he is a Libertarian--although I openly speculated to him that he was a convicted felon. One Full Professor of History declined the invitation to state who he had voted for.
