Zarqawi's Al Qaeda in Iraq May Have Nuke

Collin sends me this Washington Times story, but the info in it is not new to The Jawa Report. Ever since Zarqawi's base of operations in Fallujah was discovered, reports have been trickling in that he might have WMD capability.

For awhile Zarqawi actually claimed to have WMD, but those claims seemed to have been more bluster than anything else. And Zarqawi did attempt to make chemical and biological weapons in Fallujah.

I seriously doubt this story, though. If Zarqawi actually had WMD capability, why has he not used it? The only thing that keeps me from dismissing such stories out of hand is the possibility that Zarqawi is trying to bring the war to the U.S. Something bin Laden has suggested to him.

The story claims that the device is in Afghanistan. A possibility, since Zarqawi was in that country prior to coming to Iraq. But again, it still seems unlikely.

I'm much more inclined to believe that Zarqawi or his people are spreading the rumor that they have a nuke. You know, it just makes him look that much more macho. What, you think cutting off a few infidels heads were going to keep the population from turning him in for this long?

UPDATE: Joyner agrees with my assessment. Chad at ITB has more. Heretical Ideas seems to disagree. Washington Times:

Recurrent intelligence reports say al Qaeda terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi has obtained a nuclear device or is preparing a radiological explosive -- or dirty bomb -- for an attack, according to U.S. officials, who also say analysts are unable to gauge the reliability of the information's sources.

The classified reports have been distributed to U.S. intelligence agencies for several consecutive months and say Zarqawi, al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, has stored the nuclear device or dirty bomb in Afghanistan, said officials familiar with the intelligence.

One official said the intelligence is being questioned because analysts think al Qaeda would not hesitate to use a nuclear device if it had one.

However, the fact that the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has reported the nuclear threat in several classified reports distributed since December indicates concern about it.

1 Hmmmm! Could work against him. Preemtive strike? Why not?

2 I think if he had one, he'd use it by now.

3 confederate, having it and delivering it are two different things.

4 This is a bunch of booga booga! Stop trying to ingratiate yourself with this crowd Collin. Okay, so "Al Qaeda" (nudge nudge wink wink) has trotted down to Dimona (where else would they get a nuke) and is going to set it off inside the US leaving a note saying "We're Iranians (honest) come and GET us!" If you look at the current situation, it should be clear that Bush is not going to get America to go along with another invasion with just spin. Attempts to link OK City to Iran these last few days did not get any traction. Bush and the Neocons have cried wolf so often nobody is listening any more, and after the WMD fiasco in Iraq, nobody is taking claims of Iran's 'nookular' weapons seriously. So, for Bush to obey Sharon and invade Iran will take a real event, another 9-11 "terrorist" (nudge nudge wink wink) attack, only worse, something that leaves no evidence of itself behind to challenge the official story, and at the same time "proves" those mean ol' Aye-rahbs have 'nookular' weapons.

6 greg, that's right. We haven't been nuked yet, but the Israelis did it, just in case we are.

Posted by: Carlos at April 20, 2005 04:51 PM (tFXpR)

7 Howie, I hate Yankees. I'm a Texan. Just being silly 'cause I think the story is silly. Will they ever get tired of trying to keep us in a perpetual state of fear? Every few days more booga booga!

Posted by: greg at April 20, 2005 04:55 PM (/+dAV)

8 I would be more concerned that Zarnutjob will use any nuclear material to make a dirty bomb, which would serve his purposes much more then an actual nuke, plus be much easier to smuggle and detonate.

9 With due respect to the WaPo, they are talking total BS. It's very very difficult to build even a basic shotgun nuke. Even today, you need hundreds of millions of dollars, hard-to-get U235 or Plutonium, a _very_ clean and shielded assembly environment & many embargoed and precise components. Qaddafi had most of these and lots of German help, but never got close. Greg, it's my understanding that the Israelis have deployed a large number of high-yield thermonuclear weapons which are very much in advance of the US arsenal, let alone the crude devices the Iranians are building. It'll be 20 years before the Iranians are a real threat to Israel and by then, W willing, they'll be a democracy. So Relax!

10 Gandalf, I couldn't be more relaxed. The only serious enemy Americans have is their government.

Posted by: greg at April 20, 2005 05:04 PM (/+dAV)

11 That's pretty harsh, Greg, even for you.

12 gandalf, how "advanced" does a nuke have to be?

Posted by: Carlos at April 20, 2005 05:13 PM (tFXpR)

13 Greg hates yankees. LOL. He's a commie leftist, a Catholic and hates Bush. If that ain't New York City nothing is. On the Catholic part that is a claim. Not a fact. Probably afraid some Mexican dude will kick is ass.

14 Gandalf for president. Wow! Something with substance. Vote for Gandalf.

15 rooster, I thought it was Carlos for president.

16 My worthless & uninformed perspective: Al Qaeda (including all its wings) does not have the nuke. Specifically dealing with Zarqawi's group: they are strong (up to six suicide bombers striking on Wednesday; plus two massacres discovered) and yet weak (very, very low casualty tolls per bomber). The implication? Their ability and will is high; but their practical effectiveness is low. That seems cool for us... until you realise that such ineffectiveness in Iraq is only due to that country being incredibly experienced in dealing with terrorist attacks. What am I getting at? Forget the nuke... forget horror stories; if you wanna prophesize the future of Al Qaeda then see this - scores of soulless bastards hop, skipping & jumping across Europe's various borders & blowing themselves up in our coffee shops, hotels & transit hubs. As far as I'm concerned (and as I hope, in fact - given the alternative) I believe that in future the WOT will see Iraq as a paradigm for jihad in ALL COUNTRIES. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Iraq's suicide bombers are a very, very worry precedent. Zarqawi is laying the foundations for an organisational structure that will facilitate the transportation of bombers+explosives into your and my countries. He's the single best hope Al Qaeda has at the moment.

17 Oh and incidently; all this crap in the media about Al Qaeda in Iraq "switching tactics" and staging more high scale attacks is utter bullshit, as Rusty rightly pointed out. Everytime the mujahideen stage a "major attack" involving dozens of their fighters they get ABSOLUTELY SHAT ON by the coalition forces. The only way they can effectively up the ante is by infiltrating the security forces ranks and staging one-off big events such as the mess tent bombing in Mosul (?) that killed 14 soldiers. Such incidents as that, however, are extremely rare. Ultimately this is, and will continue to be, a low-level war of attrition.

18 Carlos: Sorry bud. But the Colon thing has you under observation by the Jedi counsel.

19 Yea, yea. I know council. Remember I'm shit faced. No one but me could type so eloquently in this condition. Shit, no one but me could even type in this condition. I can only drink until midnight. No food or drink after. The nazi, Dr. Morales has me doing a stress test at 7:30 in the morning. At least its better than last month when they stuck a tv camera up my ass. I keep telling them I feel great. They keep telling me I keep paying the bill so why should they quit?

21 I don't talk to traitors.

Posted by: greyrooster at April 20, 2005 09:34 PM (aq8Ok)

22 Somebody has to terminate Zarqawi's command.

Posted by: Collin Baber at April 21, 2005 03:33 AM (FV4oJ)

23 Greyrooster - thanks, hope the head is Ok this morning... Carlos - the Israelis need to be able to deliver assured destruction to any nation that attacks them with nukes. Since, as one of the Ayatollahs observed, the Arab nations cover a huge area and Israel a small area, that means Israel needs to be able to bust about 40 big targets. Note "be able to", if the deterrent works, it won't happen! Advanced in this context means nukes that don't need much uranium or plutonium for the trigger, and which are inexpensive, lightweight & high yield (say 250 Kilotons). 500 of these are all they need.

24 Rooster goes to the bar and orders a Budweiser. He promptly passes out and the bartender and customers take him to the backroom and rape him repeatedly. Next night he shows up, orders a Budweiser, passes out and is gang raped again. On the third night Rooster shows up and the bartender starts to grab a Budweiser. "No, no", says Rooster, "I'll have a Miller, Budweiser makes my ass sore".

25 This liberal commie dog shit Greg is so fixated by the ass fucking and dick sucking thing. Pewtred asshole. The traitor even claims to be a good Catholic. Is this thing about ass fucking and dick sucking a good Catholic thing? Would any church member wish a foul mouthed piece of garbage like Grey to be a member of their church? All his responses end up with the same trailer trash getto talk. vile traitor is what he is.

26 Oh Rooster! Can't you take a joke you big pussy?

27 Al Zarqawi is homosexual who rams goats in the behind. Let em nuke us and kiss the whole middle east goodbye. Mecca, Medina, Cairo, Damascus, Tehran and every other stinkhole city. Have no fear god loves us more.
