There should be an independent Kurdish state. The blood, sweat, and tears of our Northern Iraqi allies have earned them this right. But if we cannot have a Kurdish state at this time, I guess the

There probably will be a Kurdish state before long and a Sunni state and a Shia state too. This thing is going to degenerate into a civil war and a war between the Kurds and the Turks as soon as we leave.

"Rusty, I agree with you 100% - the Kurds have shown they're far better able to govern themselves than any others in the region besides Israel (and to an extent, Turkey)."
Turkey has certainly been able to govern Kurds.

Actus: Do you agree with the methods used by the Turks to govern the Kurds? Armenians and Kurds will always yearn to govern themselves. Always be a problem for Turkey and Iraq. Seems like if Turkey made them a self ruling state the problem would be solved. Plus gaining an Ally.

The Kurd problem is pretty much the same as if a native-american country would be established somewhere in... let's say Minnesota.
They have not had a country of their own for hundreds of years, and now that they try to get one, the ones who have had a country continuously for hundreds and hundreds of years naturally don't want to give land to a minority, just because they're different.

A FINN: Ignorance showing here. You obviously don't know a thing about Indian Lands, Reservations, special privileges on Indian land. Indian self government, Indian courts, police, on and on and on.
I recommend looking at a map of self governing Indian Lands. Millions of acres are owned by, controlled by, governed, and run by Indians.
Secondly, the Kurds are the majority where they live in areas of Turkey and Iraqi. Are Indians the majority in Minnesota?
I thought Finland thawed out by this time of year. Guess not.
Posted by: greyrooster at April 07, 2005 07:46 AM (CBNGy)

In the Reservates, the Indians are a majority, and having land they can govern themselves is not same as having a country of ones own. (Or if it is, we've been an independent country for over 5000 years instead of about 90)
Also, the Kurds are not a majority, they are a large minority concentrated on a particular area, like the reservated Indians. They are only big in that area because they were chased out of all other areas of the country.

And I am still feeling quite frozen after the winter, this year the cold came quite late and there was not much snow, only about 5 feet, so the winter stayed equally cold most of the time.

Independent country for over 5000 years instead of about 90?
AFINN: As we told you before if you're going to use drugs, you must share.
Doesn't matter why they are the majority, but in areas of Iraq and Turkey they are the vast majority. Kurds do not have the autonomy the Americans Indians have. The American Indians have lands that they own and control with their own laws and elected officials. Your comparison isn't realistic. The Kurds have nothing to call their own and they have no desire to be Iraqis or Turks.
Kurdistan is like America's Puerto Rico. The difference is they keep voting to stay as part of America. Most would be more than happy if they formed their own government and went their own way.

Perhaps the Kurd situation will change now, that the president of Iraq IS a Kurd.
Posted by: A Finn at April 07, 2005 01:28 PM (lGolT)

Being the president of Iraq is not worth much. It's an honorary title. The prime minister has the real power - a Shia.

You have an army in there, make them change laws and equalize the power between the prime minister and the president.

After the two world wars, Finland was concidered a threat to world peace, and the ones on the west side decided, that Finnish army is only allowed to leave the country, unless UN or EU gives them permission. We are also forbidden from possessing WoMDs, since we used spinach gas against Russians in the Winter War.(They started it, so we had every right to do that...)

Since I have been using public computers for this "hobby" of mine, people living near me apparently have taken interest in these, and acknowledge my identity. Therefore I might face getting sued for slander, blasphemy or bigotry, not to mention getting my computer confiscated and an evil eye cast upon me for causing trouble. (My mental health might also be questioned publicly by others than greyrooster)
Also, whatever I've written here, most likely insults severely some people that have an effect of some sort in my everyday life. And because of that I say goodbye, forever. This visit of mine awoke way too much attention back home. I shall not meddle in other peoples business on this site.
So I apologize to who ever insulted by my writings or comments that came because of them and hereby promise not to participate in activities on this site.

I do really agree with you that if America had to abandon
(Iraq/Kurdistan) it would be disastrous for us and for Iraqis, but I am
afraid
that was not my suggestion, and I do agree with you that leaving Iraq
would
not solve the problem.
Let me tell you first that I as a kurd was pro-war and do still support
the war
even it gets worse.
THEREFORE I WOULD BE HAPPY IF THE WORLD HELPS US TO DECIDE OUR FATE!
But the reason why I and million of my fellow kurdistanian are not
happy is due
to the way {usa, uk, france, Russia, germany, japan, Pakistan, turk,
arab,
Irannian, etc} dealing with the Kurdish issue in the middle east!
Yes! It is really naive and sad that the entire world (above mentioned
nations
and countries) all say the same when it comes to Kurdistan!
GOD SAKE! FOR HOW LONG, THE NATION OF KURD WOULD HAVE TO BLEED IN
ORDER TO
APPEASE TURKEY AND ARABS!
PLEASE IT IS A VERY SIMPLE QUESTION:
WHY THE ENTIRE WORLD ASK ONLY KURDS TO COMPROMISE?
WHAT ABOUT TURKEY, IRAN AND ARAB! DON`T THEY NEED TO?
Or
Is it all about OIL AND INTEREST?
Well you know the answer, dont you?
It is indeed all about oil and interest. But Kurds have oil in kirkuk
as well,
Oh! Yes, they have. So why everybody says {Kurds cannot benefit from
their Owen
national wealth, Kurds cannot have kirkuk and Kurds cannot have
independence}?
Believe me it should be France and UK therefore, to push for an
independent
Kurdish state more than any other government, as a beginning to repair
the
destruction and the damage they have left behind since 1920 when Iraq
was first
manufactured.
Kurds are the only ones who do not need American support, troops or
guidance.
At the same time they are the only ones willing and able to immediately
provide
Help and support in clearing the mess.they can contribute more than the
Britain
and the remnants of the coalition.
So if washimgton redefines its political objective and breaks up the
country
into tow or three states .it would cut losses in the south and not
destroy all
the chances for success anywhere else in the country.the shi`ites might
even
think more favourably
Of the USA.
The shi`ites are likely to climb into bed with Iran anyway, with or
without
American attempts to stop them. This would be a loss to the usa but a
rump
shi`ites state aligned with iran would not shift the regional balance
significantly, specially with a flourishing Kurdish state in the north
also on
the Irans border but pro American.

as a kurd from iraqi part kurdistan
i strongly believe that the only way out of this hell is partition,i mean to split iraq into three or two entities .
regardless what USA and UK wanted in the first place it would be impossible to keep iraq united .
in fact it would be a nightmare for kurds having rulled themselve for almost 15 years to ask them now to join iraq again.
as a kurd i would like to advice you and any other people who might be interested in iraq`s future to have a better look at the situation in iraq right now.
although mr Talabany and Barzany pretending to the world that they have no intention to declare independent kurdistan
but i am afraid that is what every single kurd wants to have sooner rather than latter !
Mr.Talabany and Barzany might hide this intention right now because that is the role they have been given by american!
but i am afraid tomorrow there will be a real kurdish leader who will shout very loudly that
kurds want independent kurdistan right now ..
thank you very much .
