CNN: The U.S. counter terrorism officials confirmed the man in custody was Nasar, a 47-year-old Syrian who also has Spanish citizenshipÂ… Â…One of the counter terrorism officials cautioned against overstating his importance in the terror network, saying Nasar was a "background" guy with a "number of contacts." "Nasar is best known for his writings," the official said. But the official added, "We're better off that he's captured."
Background info on Nasar.
TKB: Biography: Mustafa Setmariam Nasar, also known as Abu Musab al-Suri and Umar Abd al-Hakim, is a wanted man in both the United States and Spain. Nasar was born in 1959 in Syria where he joined the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood, a fundamentalist organization, was heavily repressed by the Syrian government, prompting Nasar to write a book that would make him famous in Islamist circles, “The Syrian Experiment.” In the book, written under the pseudonym Abu Musab Suri, Nasar issued a call to action against the ruling Asad regime in Syria. He has also written under the pseudonym Umar Abd al-Hakim.

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations at major military medical centers. Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the 'Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse. The experience of CPT Charles "Chuck" Ziegenfuss, a partner in the project who suffered hand wounds while serving in Iraq, illustrates how important this voice-controlled software can be to a wounded servicemember's recovery.

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- A Florida school district has decided that students will get no religious holidays from school after a debate over which religion should get the days.Hillsborough County School Board members approved the 2006-2007 school year calendar with only three holiday days off -- Labor Day, President's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Ahmed Bedier of the Council on American-Islamic Relations had hoped for a day off of school for the Muslim holy day of Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
Bishop Chuck Leigh of the Florida Council of Churches said the board made a mistake in not granting the Muslim holiday.
But school board attorney Tom Gonzalez told the board that it was wrong to close the school for any religion.
Students who miss class for a religious holiday will not be penalized.
Wow, I was all set to do a throwdown on this school district, because at first glance it appears that they're inconveniencing everyone just to appease CAIR. Typically, that's how these things tend to work. See: 10 Commandments monuments, et.al.
But then I took a look at my kids calendar for school, where no CAIR member dare to tread, and here are the single day holidays:
Labor Day
Martin Luther King Day
President's Day
Memorial Day
So I thought, hm, they've axed Thanksgiving to appease CAIR, but then I dug out the (PDF alert!) school calendar mentioned in the article, and there it was.
What about Christmas? Still off, because it falls under the politically correctly monikered Winter Break.
So, we can give this school district kudos for telling CAIR to shove it, albeit in an offhand way. All they did was put out a press release saying that they're going to keep the same days off that they did before, but, by adding the religious angle, they get CAIR off of their backs.
There is a dark side to the tale, however. I took a look at the calendar for (PDF alert!) this school year, and compared it to the one for next, and there was a single day holiday eliminated.
Veterans Day. (if you're wondering about Memorial Day, a look at the calendar shows these schools let out before then)

CENTCOM:An al-Qaeda terrorist cell leader who personally assisted in at least three videotaped beheadings and his assistant were killed during a Coalition raid of a suspected safe house in Mosul Oct. 22. Nashwan Mijhim Muslet (aka Abu Tayir or Abu Zaid) was a senior operational al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist cell leader who operated specifically in the Mosul area. His cell was known as the primary beheading cell for Abu Talha, the al-Qaeda in Iraq Emir of Mosul who was captured in June, 2005, and Abu Zubayr, second in command to Talha and later Emir of Mosul after Talha was detained. Zubayr was killed in August, 2005.
Good riddance I can only hope it was a slow and painful death and he was very aware he was dying the whole time. Click for photos of his ugly mug and his buddy below.

And the icing on the cake is being the blogson. Being the blogson gives me access to Rusty that even Howie can only dream of.
What is the point of all this? Well, I have excellent news. Because of my special relationship with my blogfather, I am the only blogger here who has seen the fruits of his labors, the sweat of his brow, the baby that he is soon to deliver with all the pain and agony that birthing a masterpiece entails.
I have the first page of the first chapter of the book that Rusty is putting his final touches on, and I have been granted permission to post it here.
So without further ado, because he who hestitates, well, you know the rest... more...

The sides agreed to a measure stating that if the draft constitution is passed, the next parliament will be able to consider amendments to it that would then be put to a new referendum next year, Shiite and Sunni officials said. A top Sunni negotiator, Ayad al-Samarraie of the Iraqi Islamic Party, said that if the current parliament approves the measure, "we will stop the campaign rejecting the constitution and we will call on Sunni Arabs to vote yes." Some other major Sunni parties were not present at the negotiations and it was not clear if they too would be willing to reverse their "no" campaigns.
As always in the middle east if there are five seconds left there is still time.

Some Pakistani officials said Latifi was arrested Tuesday, but the intelligence official said he was detained Sunday at a home in Quetta's Newi Killi neighborhood. The announcement of Latifi's arrest had been delayed because he was being interrogated about other Taliban leaders, the official said.
Latifi as you may recall is an if not accurate, common mouthpiece spouting Taliban propaganda.

"For a very long time there are no intercepts about Usama bin Laden giving instructions to his regional commanders, either through radio, telephone, satellite phone or the Internet," a senior security official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject. If he is unable to give orders physically or otherwise, it clearly indicates that his communication has been severed."

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that terrorist traitor and general rat bastard Jose Padilla can be held as an enemy combatent. The ruling means that Padilla does not have claim on US courts for relief and that his hippie-dhimmi allies at the ACLU will just have to continue to annoy us with lawsuits aimed at getting the gays married instead of trying to spring terrorists from the pokie on technicalities. Two in one day. Updated : CNN has full story now.
Nasar al-Rubaie, a member of the committee drafting the document, said the document would be handed over to the 275-member National Assembly late Monday for a decision on the two unresolved issues -- women's rights and self-determination. Jalaldin al-Saghir, a Shiite member of parliament, said the same thing but refused to identify the two remaining issues.
Updated again: It seems the national assembly has asked for 7 to 10 days to review this draft. If the issues are not worked out the assembly will dissolve itself and the whole thing starts all over.
The committee drafting the document had asked for an extension after it failed to reach a compromise by Monday's deadline after months of talks. The new deadline is August 22. Without the extension, the government would have dissolved, requiring new elections in December and starting the process again. Two Shiite officials told The Associated Press earlier Monday that Iraqi politicians had agreed on a draft constitution but delayed a decision on two key issues. The president's office told CNN no such deal had been reached.
Also here on ABCNEWS.
Yep fast is not always good. So now we get seven to ten more days. I've noted that in this part of the world no one agree's until the last minute. Well they've found some more minutes. I expect this will go on right up until the 22nd possibly until the early hours of the 23rd.

Rising up against insurgent leader Abu Musab Zarqawi, Iraqi Sunni Muslims in Ramadi fought with grenade launchers and automatic weapons Saturday to defend their Shiite neighbors against a bid to drive them from the western city, Sunni leaders and Shiite residents said. The fighting came as the U.S. military announced the deaths of six American soldiers. Dozens of Sunni members of the Dulaimi tribe established cordons around Shiite homes, and Sunni men battled followers of Zarqawi, a Jordanian, for an hour Saturday morning. The clashes killed five of Zarqawi's guerrillas and two tribal fighters, residents and hospital workers said. Zarqawi loyalists pulled out of two contested neighborhoods in pickup trucks stripped of license plates, witnesses said. The leaders of four of Iraq's Sunni tribes had rallied their fighters in response to warnings posted in mosques by followers of Zarqawi. The postings ordered Ramadi's roughly 3,000 Shiites to leave the city of more than 200,000 in the area called the Sunni Triangle. The order to leave within 48 hours came in retaliation for alleged expulsions by Shiite militias of Sunnis living in predominantly Shiite southern Iraq

Let's hope this one is for real. If it is, it is a confirmation of earlier report we made last Friday of Zarqawi's demise. Infrequent Jawa contributor Editor (update: who tells me that he got the link from The Junkyard Blog) drops this link into the comments section:
The Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi - al-Qaeda's leader in Iraq - died on Friday and his body is in Fallujah's cemetary, an Iraqi Sunni sheikh, Ammar Abdel Rahim Nasir, has told the Saudi on-line newspaper Al-Medina. He claims that gunfights which broke out in Fallujah in the last few days involved militants trying to protect the insurgency leader's tomb from a group of American soldiers patrolling the area.During a telephone conversation from the city of Fallujah with the Saudi newspaper, Nasir said al-Zarqawi was taken there after being injured in the city of Ramadi around three weeks ago, and may have been treated by two doctors who had worked with his aides in Baghdad. He said the two doctors had stopped a serious haemorrhage in al-Zarqawi's intestines, but that after his condition worsened last week, the militant died on Friday.
Nasir adds that in his will the insurgent leader left the order that no funeral should be held for him and the right to announce his death should be left to the al-Qaeda leadership in Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden.
The Al-Medina newspaper reports that it also called the headmaster of a school in Fallujah, who preferred to remain anonymous, but confirmed that many people in the city were aware of the fact that al-Zarqawi had recently been taken to the city.
Sheikh Nasir's claims appear to correspond with reports several weeks ago that al-Zarqawi had been injured and taken to Ramadi hospital for emergency treatment, and with messages on the Internet talking of two Arab doctors accompanying him. Al-Zarqawi was reported to have been seen at the hospital on April 27. The hospital's director told an Iraq-based newspaper that US troops later surrounded and raided the entire building, searching for the Jordanian militant.

Via LGF this from Hammorabi blogging from Iraq:
The Jordanian thug Fadhel Nazal Al-Khalayla (Zarqawi) 38 years has died.Hammorabi notes that he received word through oral communication. He received treatment from Arab doctors who were not very experts and lacking intensive care equipments which he needed for his puncture in the right lung. His wounds infection gets resistance to the antibiotics. He had what is called septicemia which is according to doctors an infection of the blood resulted from infected wound. Zarqawi's systems started to fail including his kidney and liver.
He died and now in the hands of the Keepers of the Hell in its worst level.
And now a Saudi publication publishes this (hat tip: Gateway Pundit):
The family of injured Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi - al-Qaeda's pointman in Iraq - is already preparing his obituary, the Saudi daily al-Watan said on Friday, quoting sources close to the family. Al-Zarqawi's close relatives, all of whom live in the Jordanian city of Zarqa, are reported to be in state of high tension over the conflicting reports circulating over his state of health, and are only waiting for officials to confirm his death before releasing the death notice.Jordanian security forces have surrounded the Ramzi quarter of Zarqa where al-Zarqawi's family lives, al-Watan said. Relatives have confirmed that al-Zarqawi's wife and four children fled to Iraq in secret six months ago.Another update: Zarqawi minions denying he is dead. The problem is that is exactly what we'd expect them to say had he died.....developing.....
Al-Qaeda in Iraq said its leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the country's most wanted man, was 'in good health', in a statement posted Friday on the Internet whose authenticity could not be confirmed.'Our leader is in good health. He is directing the jihadist operations and has been following the details right up to the time that this statement was drafted,' the statement said.
