News 24 Amman: Jordan has arrested a senior member of the al-Qaeda in Iraq militant group, a senior official said on Monday.

"The Jordanian intelligence services have arrested an important figure in the al-Qaeda in Iraq organisation led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his testimony will be broadcast by Jordanian television on Tuesday evening," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The official declined to elaborate on the identity of the detainee or the manner of his capture.

But another Jordanian official hailed the suspect's arrest as "one of the most important foreign operations ever carried out by the Jordanian intelligence services".

Update: FOXNEWS is reporting the identity of the terrorist.

The Iraqi, Ziad Khalaf Raja al-Karbouly, was detained by Jordanian intelligence agents and special anti-terrorism forces, according to a government announcement on Jordanian TV.
It said he worked as a customs clearing agent on Iraq's border with Jordan, where he handled stolen goods under direct orders from Al Qaeda in Iraq leadersÂ…

Â…It also broadcast his confession, in which he admitted to being a member of Al Qaeda in Iraq and gave details of some attempts to attack Jordanian citizens, including truck drivers on routes between Iraq and the kingdom.

Yahoo News :His brother, Mohammed al-Nuaimi, said the family had been told by the government that he was free, but they did not know how his release came about.

"The officials just told us that he was released and he was on his way to the embassy," al-Nuaimi said from his home in Dibba, a town in the southern Emirates.

"We have no details on how he has been released."

He won’t be surviving very long if a “moratorium" on executions is lifted. Nurpashi Kulayev was sentenced to die for his role in the siege of school which ended in the deaths of the rest of the terrorists and 300+ school children and teachers. At the very least he will rot for the rest of his life.

Euronews: The only man charged over the Beslan school siege two years ago has been found guilty and could face the death penalty. Reading out the sentence, the Russian judge said Nurpashi Kulayev had committed murder and attempted murder, taken part in a bandit group, taken hostages and illegally stored and transported weapons.

An official moratorium on the death penalty is in place.

However Deputy Attorney General Nikolai Shepel said he had asked for the highest punishment, the death penalty, but that he would not comment further and would wait for the court to decide.

A total of 330 people were killed when a group of gunmen, including suspected Chechen separatists, took over a school in Beslan on the first day of term. The other hostage-takers were killed in a shoot-out with Russian security forces.

IDF troops and elite border policemen surrounded a home in the village of Kabatiya, near Jenin, on Sunday after receiving intelligence that top Islamic Jihad terrorist Elias Ashkar was holed up inside. After the troops encircled the home, they were fired upon. They returned fire, killing Ashkar and four others.

Good news indeed! These men were last seen in a terrorist video released on January 27th. The terrorist group called Tawhid and Sunnah brigade had threatened to kill them unless Germany met their demands which were that Germany cut off all diplomatic and trading ties with the new Iraqi government.

Reuters via Alertnet :The two men were abducted on Jan. 24 outside their workplace in the industrial town of Baiji, 180 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said they had been freed without warning and appeared to be unharmed.

"I am very pleased to inform you that the two kidnapped men from Leipzig, Rene Braeunlich and Thomas Nitzschke, have been freed today," Steinmeier said in a statement. He said the men, being looked after in Germany's embassy in Baghdad, were expected to return home on Wednesday.

"After spending more than three months under inhumane conditions they are in German care," added Steinmeier, who was on an official visit to Chile.

Since the kidnapping, hundreds of people had gathered in their hometown of Leipzig, eastern Germany, for weekly vigils, placing flowers and lighting candles.

Update : Braeunlich and Nitzschke have arrived in Germany and have given a brief statement. The German government refused to release details on how their release was secured.

ABCNEWS : "We are very happy to still be alive, which we don't take for granted," Nitzschke said.

"I am happy to be back home," Braeunlich said. "We had a difficult time."

After their statements, they boarded a minivan that government officials said would take them to a private reunion with their families.

The pair were released Tuesday after being held hostage since Jan. 24. The Foreign Ministry declined to provide details on how the pair were freed including whether a ransom was paid citing safety reasons.

In a written statement, the military has confirmed two Iraqi soldiers died in the fighting and no Americans were killed.

Xinhua via English People : The U.S. military said on Friday that Iraqi security forces fought insurgents in Baquba, 65 km northeast of Baghdad, when militants waged a series of attacks on Thursday.

"Iraqi security forces quickly responded to a series of attacks on April 27 in Baquba in the eastern Diyala province, leaving 21 anti-Iraqi forces dead and capturing 43," the military said in a statement.

Ealier today I had this link saying coalition forces stomped 20 Taliban into the ground.

Guardian UK : KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Coalition forces killed between 15 and 20 militants in fighting over the weekend in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, the U.S. military said Monday.

A coalition patrol on Saturday attacked militants carrying assault rifles and grenade launchers, who were ``moving with the intent to set up an ambush'' in the province's Sangin district, a military statement said.
No coalition forces were hurt, it said.

Reuters :"Our convoy using night-vision optics on their vehicle were able to see three vehicles preparing for an ambush," Canadian spokesman Major Marc Theriault said of the Saturday night clash.

The convoy was travelling to a remote base in the Sangin district of Helmand province when the insurgents were spotted, he said.

Canadian forces attacked and destroyed the three vehicles which contained 15 to 20 insurgents, he said. No Canadians were hurt.

Updated : Canadians targeted by the enemy looking for revenge and thankfully none were injured. The terrorists did manage to murder one innocent old man though. Way to go Taliban murderers of helpless old men. Your cowardly method of attack reaps you shame.

Canada.com :KABUL (CP) - Three Canadian coalition members were hit by an improvised explosive device - or roadside bomb - near Kabul on Tuesday, but escaped without injury, the military said.

The unidentified attacker was driving a white car that exploded about 100 metres from the convoy, spraying shrapnel over a wide distance, Parwani said.

Several reports said Canadian soldiers were also involved in that attack, although none were injured.
