Marine Corps Deserter Wassef Ali Hassoun

(Beirut, Lebanon) From the Khaleej Times comes the report that Lebanese authorities refused to extradite to the United States Hezbollah members suspected of attacking Americans in Beirut during the 1980s.

They also refused to extradite U.S. Marine Corps deserter, Wassef Ali Hassoun (pic).

Authorities have also rejected a US request to hand over Wassef Hassoun, an American of Lebanese origin who deserted the Marines in 2004 and left Iraq for Lebanon and then left the southern port city of Tripoli for the US. It was reported later that Hassoun has left the US and headed back to Lebanon.

The judicial sources said the general amnesty law which was adopted in 1991 after the 1975-1990 civil war ended in Lebanon covered incidents of which the four were accused. As for Hassoun, the sources gave no reason for rejecting his extradition.

The four are Imad Moughaniyeh, Hassan Ezzeddine, Ali Atwe, and Mohammed ali Hamadeh. All but one are accused of helping in the 1983 bombing in Beirut where over 100 U.S. Marines were killed (Clarification from hondo - 241 killed). The other, Mohammed ali Hamadeh, is accused of the 1985 highjacking of a TWA jet during which a U.S. Navy diver was killed.

So, somewhere in Lebanon, fugitive deserter Wassef Ali Hassoun is living his life constantly looking over his shoulder. I hope he suffers from anxiety attacks.

In a later report from Beirut, The Daily Star indicates that Lebanese officials are still considering the U.S. extradition request.

"The issue is still being studied," said a Foreign Ministry spokesperson to The Daily Star in reference to the latest request by a U.S. official to extradite five wanted Lebanese citizens, accused of attacks against Americans, to be tried in the U.S.

"We have no official final comment at this point," said the spokesperson.

To be continued ....

3 I see you don't have any posts on the civil war breaking out in Iraq on your site. Maybe if you conservatives ignore it it's not there. Good strategy. Can't have the facts messing up your selective application of logic/reason and assumptions to fit your simplified world view. No one is saying I told you so. But your faith-based messianic leaders have put our men and women in a tough spot. Iraq is descending into the depths. (And I'm helping the terrorists by thinking negatively). God bless our troops but our lying leaders who have substituted ideology for competence, arrogance for leadership need to take a hike. McCain 2008.

4 Er, McCain supported the war, idiot. And perhaps, if your head wasn't up your ass, you'd have scrolled around and seen: http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/160375.php http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/160348.php http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/160321.php And, now that you see our 'legits', I'd suggest going to the link in this post about the Iraq the MSM won't cover. The one that is busy rebuilding and loving Americans. http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/160931.php

5 anonymous: I don't recall the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, being referred to as a "civil war". I wonder if that is because despite often large incidents of violence, that not all of the country shared the views of killing their fellow countrymen, or took part in it?

6 Every group has 10% that we call shit birds. Except with Islam which has almost a 100%.

7 What we've seen recently in Iraq is not civil war. That's not to say it can't happen, but there are too many calling to put a stop to it. Hell, even those Imams who love violence are calling for a halt to it. Dave's right on this one.
