3 Hey, you have to understand the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. They are so afraid of offending someone they'd probably offer to help carry the explosives. Why the bus driver even allowed them on the bus is beyond me. Wharton High is 10 miles north of USF. The article says they got on the bus at Fletcher Avenue and 42nd Street. Amazingly, that intersection is right behind the USF campus. There's a million questions just begging to be answered about this.

5 Just finished watching the New Orleans news. Two interesting pieces of news filmed. One showed 5 big fat black women shakeing their fists and wearing funny laundry on their heads. They were demanding new houses and more money. Reminded me of the Taliban. The other showed approx. 75 white people of all ages doing voluntary work cleaning up the cleaning up the parks in New Orleans. What's wrong with the picture? New Orleans being 67% black. Will libs and blacks ever get the picture.

8 It could be Carlos that most blacks are just lazy. There, I said it, and anyone who wants an apology can kiss my ass, because everyone knows it's true. The other day a tree fell across my neighbor's yard into mine, and I went out to clean it up. My neighbor is a disabled veteran and doesn't leave the house, but his brother is a big, strong man who also doesn't leave the house, except to sell some crack from time to time. I cleaned up most of the tree in both our yards with just a hatchet, because my chainsaw isn't working. The next morning, my neighbor's father-in-law, a black man about 80 years old, was out there cutting up the tree, but the young, strong guys couldn't be bothered to help him. I helped him some but had to leave for an appointment, and while we rested once he told me how it sickened him to see how most young black men today are too lazy to do anything. This old man mows the grass twice a month and volunteers for his church, but the young guys can't do much more than chase whores and sell drugs. I'm sure MLK would be proud.

9 Could be the slavery rebellion issue. Former slaves are of a mind-set that they have paid their dues and society owes them a living. Perhaps the older guy remembers life or stories of good plantations where slaves were treated as part of the family and there was work and music and cooking and sharing and dancing. Without that experience the younger ones can only think of the evils of slavery and how they need to be compensated for it.

10 Larry, I've know a lot of blacks, what with being from the South and all, and there are many who are as decent and hard-working as anyone else, but most seem caught up in the liberal model of themselves and cannot or will not function in greater society. Ironically it's usually the black men who are the worst, while black women are generally very industrious, from my observations. Around here if you see a black woman driving a nice car, and there are a lot, she's usually dressed professionally, like the I saw yesterday, wearing surgical scrubs and driving a really nice new car, but if you see a black man in a nice car, it's usually pimped out and he's dressed like a thug. I think the slavery rebellion thing is just an excuse, considering that slavery ended several generations ago, and it's been a long time since the last ex-slave died. I've known lots of old black people who remember segregation and the bad old days, and they're full of stories about how many of the historically black neighborhoods used to be nice and well-kept, with clean streets where children could play without fear. Of course they also tell of injustices, but life is full of injustices; it's how one reacts to injustice, and opportunity, that matters.

"Your mujahideen brothers managed to place a bomb in the special lift used by the apostate Tareq Abu Rajab ... but were hasty in detonating the device which should have been triggered once the lift door was closed."

Either these men belong on the short bus or else something fishy is going on. Michelle Malkin thinks so, IÂ’ll defer to her judgement since I donÂ’t have any.

TBO : TAMPA - Two Saudi men were arrested Friday after they boarded a school bus and rode to Wharton High School in New Tampa.
Students on the bus became alarmed, as did the bus driver, who called ahead. Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies met the bus at the school and detained the men. No one was injured and nothing out of line occurred on the bus, deputies said.

Well thatÂ’s the real trick, aint it kid? He is right though, failure to disarm the militias right at the start was an error. At least I think it may have been an error. IÂ’ve not met these Â“Maximum ForceÂ” guys yet. Who are they?

Iraq: The 'What if' Game

I've been reading an alternate history trilogy by Harry Harrison that explores what might have happened during the American Civil War if Britain's Prince Albert had died a few months sooner than he did. Without Queen Victoria's consort to moderate, a minor incident precipitates Great Britain's entry into the war against the Union, which causes the South to unite with the North against the "common enemy"...and Harrison weaves an entertaining tale from this scenario.

2 If you want to read a really good series on alternate history, than you should read Harry Turtledove's look at his book "How Few Remain" which chronicles what would have happened if the Confederacy had won the Civil War. This book is followed by the "Greatwar" trilogy where the US has allied itself with Germany against the Confederacy, England, France, Russia and Canada in an alternate version of WW1. This series is followed in-turn by the "Worldwar" where the Confederacy is governed by a right-wing dictator (ala Adolf Hitler)who plots revenge against the Confederacy loss in the previous series, terrorism is Canada against the US occupiers and the US is the victim of a surprise attack. Absolutely a great read.

4 Wow, a counterfactual history in which EVERYTHING goes worse. That's really credible. Shoot, I've read counters by professional historians in which Hitler wins, and even those don't have uniformly bad consequences (for example, Stalin gets slaughtered). You seem to think that if we hadn't invaded Iraq, Afghanistan becomes a disaster. I couldn't disagree more. Take a fraction of the billions we spent in Iraq so far, and put it in Afghanistan, a much poorer country to start with, and take a fraction of the troops we have put in Iraq, and guarantee security outside Kabul. Also, remember that the western alliance wouldn't have been blown apart by the war in Iraq, so we would have even more assistance in Afghanistan than we do today. My guess is, Afghanistan becomes a Muslim paradise, an example to the entire region. Uzbekis, Kirghiz, Tajiks, Turkomenis, all begin to hope for a US invasion. And Iranians, too. Instead, they look at Iraq and Afghanistan, and say--this is what Democracy looks like. Seriously, read Assassin's Gate, Bluto. It's an amazing book about how we blew it in Iraq. It is full of unbelievable stories at the ground level. For example, the professional military in Kirkuk, without input from the CPA, was doing a much better job of reconstruction, BECAUSE they weren't waiting for Bremer and his slow money and micromanaging. Things really went to hell when the military got replaced by CPA and contractors (the "experts").

5 Oh, just for clarification--I did not mean to write a full counterfactual, so that's why there are no negatives from NOT invading Iraq. In fact, I think there would have been some negatives from not invading Iraq: 1. Possibility that Saddam would one day develop WMD, and provide them to terrorists. 2. continued suffering of Iraqi people under his brutal regime. 3. Minor to medium threat of Saddam to his neighbors (his military was still pretty weak, and I doubt it, but it was a minor possibility). There were reasons to go into Iraq. They just didn't outweigh the myriad reasons NOT to go into Iraq.

6 jd, you're too young to remember it, but you might find reading about the Soviet experience in Afghanistan instructive. Some basic military tactical and strategic history would undoubtedly be useful for you, as well. I'll see your "Muslim paradise" (snicker, good one, jd) and raise you three now liberated Muslim countries, that while not paradises, are on far better and more promising roads than they were. And that trumps our decades of doing nothing productive in the Middle East.

7 I think Afghanistan is better off. I'm not so sure about Iraq. The good straussians that laid the intellectual foundations for this war could tell us that Hobbes was right about human nature--we prefer even a brutal, monstrous government to a non-existent one. If it ends up better off, then five years of suffering will be worth it. But I'm not convinced that we have created a better situation. We'll see, I guess. but my point about the counterfactual stands. Good ones look at the up and the down side. There are almost none of them that are unvarnished good or bad, because there are almost no absolutely awful or perfectly marvelous turning points in history. Most of what I know about the Afghan war(s) comes from Imperial Hubris. I do recommend it--it's an excellent primer on modern Afghan history.

Since G.W. succeded the throne , abdul has noticed that all of iran's enemies are being clobbered. Saddam's iraq is now an iranian mini-me state. The taliban have been sent back to the farms to bother the sheep. Al-qaeda, which used to blow up the occasional mosque in iran, is now either cave diving in pakistan or getting a tan in Gitmo. The syrians have been forced out of leb , leaving the iranians as the sole power there. Hamas has been allowed to assume power in palestine. And remember all options are on table including allowing the iranians to go nuclear. The u.s. has become a tool.

9 jd, I think the only argument against your point is that we shouldn't do too much for them, but show them how to do it themselves. Which is what's being done. Sure, we could have thrown more troops into Afghanistan and left Iraq out of the picture, but that often creates an atmosphere of dependency. It's a blanace that has been difficult to achieve. And many still argue that balance. Your obvious "what ifs" are mostly correct. But you forgot one thing - Saddam had too many other players in his pockets; Russia, France, etc. He had enablers, very powerful enablers. We expect Iran to be subversive, and they've not disappointed us, but not a liberal democracy like France or a country like Russia who on the one side is still in the reformation stage and on the other side quietly keeping the autocracy alive. They had to be exposed as much as Saddam needed to be deposed. But this is just another opinion of mine. And you know how opinionated I am ;-)

6 If I could travel back through time and tell Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin, et al, about the internet, they'd probably assume that humanity was universally intelligent and enlightened by now, and that war, poverty, misery, and stupidity were things of the barbaric past. Then I'd tell them about lefturd trolls and idiot moonbats with their JOOOOOO conspiracy theories, etc., and they'd probably destroy all their inventions and go live in a cave. I wouldn't blame them. Society is not progressing, but regressing, and in a hundred years, savages will run the show. It's kind of nice but sad to be a member of the last generation of humanity to know what Liberty was, and to remember what it was like to have faith in human potential. 5 Iran was well on the road to modernization before the Ayatollah came to power. The projections for Iranian oil output were huge, instead production has fallen to levels not seen since the early 1970's. They had a legitimate nuclear program too and were living up to the NPO. They weren't a "nation of medieval savages" at all and were well on their way to becoming a powerful force in the region. What Carter needed to do was to convince the Shah to begin introducing democratic institutions and gradually handing power over to them. What he did instead was cut and run. It wasn't long after Iran fell that Russia invaded Afghanistan. We are still dealing with these events to this day. Jimmy Carter created those "medieval savages".

New Government in Iraq

(Baghdad) After three years of turmoil following the ouster of Saddam Hussein, a new Iraqi government has been sworn in before a special session of parliament.

The 37-member Cabinet is made up of members from all of Iraq's religious, sectarian and ethnic groups. It took months of negotiations to form after the Dec. 15 elections and is Iraq's first constitutional government since the U.S. invasion toppled Saddam.
"This is a historic day for Iraq and all its people," deputy parliament speaker Khalid al-Attiyah said in a nationally televised news conference before the session. "This government represents all Iraqis."

Maybe it's just my ignorance, but it seems that the formation of a new government in Iraq is a milestone event worth trumpeting. Text books tell us that the colonies took considerably longer than three years to cast off the shackles of tyranny and establish the United States so, not only is the creation of a constitutional democracy in Iraq a major event in world history, it was accomplished in record time when compared to America. However, despite my beliefs, a search through the mainstream media reveals the story getting ho-hum mention and usually it's sandwiched between graphically reported segments showing violence in the streets.

Nonetheless, I congratulate the citizens of the nation of Iraq.

4 Can't Grasp Reality Larry, You show a woefully ignorant stance in regards to insurgency, and counter-insurgency -- history has shown time and time again, even when a lawful Government is in control, the insurgency will continue. They do not stop until certain things occur -- like being brought into the political arena for negotiations (like the IRA), local support is completely dissolved, supply lines are destroyed and one could argue when all insurgents have been killed or injured. No one trumpeted the end of the insurgency in Iraq with the establishment of a new Government Muppet, only that it is one stage closer to Iraqi's to self governing where we can start to wind down our control. I'll even give you a clue -- it will become stronger when it's announced we're starting to move troops out of the area, so they appear to have chased off the "invaders" and partly because once we leave their will be no "legitimate" targets, and that will dissolve local support by all but the hardliners.

I don't hold out any hope that Iraq will be "free from the shackles of tyranny." As the world becomes more globalized and technologized (and therefore more scary and overwhelming) Muslims will continue to turn back to fanaticism. There will be an apocalyptic confrontation between the west and Islam sometime in the near future; I'm convinced of it.

The reality is, that the military are always ferreting out pockets of resistance as detected, Operation Phantom Fury showed the enemy get stronger when they control an area, and it is dangerous to attack the enemy in their fortified positions (or their backyard so to speak.) I guess it's pretty simple to think an insurgency and a war will be quick, when you compare it to the 1991 Gulf War you saw on CNN, but unfortunately it is a very different war this time.

They constantly mock and ridicule a budding democracy and the democratic elections in Iraq by applying our own standards of democracy in the US (right down to the least detail), yet they say little about the democratic elections just held by the Palestinians other than shrill criticisms about not sending monetary aid to them as a result of their decision to be represented by people who killed indiscriminately for a living. The two are world's apart and they've shown their true colors by mocking one and not the other. They show not the slightest understanding of what it takes to build a democracy with a fair and representative government nor what it is when finally slapped in the face with it. The vast majority of Iraqis want a democracy much like ours and have made huge leaps toward that goal against all odds and all we hear, day in and day out, is ridicule and naysaying. The vast majority of Iraqis are decent people and they deserve more than what they get from the west's far-left faction. And yes, even the near-left and many on the far-right. The Sunnis, Shias and Kurds are all at the same table for the first time in history and all we get is either yawns or sniping. It just makes me sick that these people can be so shallow, so partisan, that they can't or won't discern right from wrong.

Democracy is just mob-rule without the rioting, and is prone to all the flaws inherent in human nature, which are exacerbated when the group dynamic is factored in, and so rather than creating solutions through concensus, democracy creates greater problems through concensus, unless the people of the society in question are ethical enough to resist the temptations that come with such power. As we have seen many times in many places, starting with Athens and continuing in every country with some form of democratic system, democracies always commit suicide, as all Western nations are doing right now, including our own. Why do you think that we, a democratic republic, would not give this same form of government to the Afghans and Iraqis, but rather a parliamentary democracy instead? The answer is simple; parliamentary democracies are inherently weak due to infighting, and thus are generally not a danger to anyone but themselves. Like the saying goes, democracy is a system by which people can give themselves the government they deserve, good and hard.

I've held off posting about this because this is the Jawa Report, one of the premier counter-terrorism blogs in the 'sphere, and by the time I have a chance to post about something counterterrorism, it's usually already been covered. Turns out the story about the attempted suicide in Gitmo was more attempted than suicide:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ten Guantanamo prisoners lured U.S. guards into a cell with a staged suicide attempt, then attacked them with light fixtures, fan blades and other improvised weapons while guards fired rubber balls and used a grenade launcher to subdue them, U.S. officials said on Friday.

The blog-grandfather (stein hoist for the Reuters link) speculates that it coincides with the reported release of 16 Saudi prisoners.

I think it has more to do with the simple fact that Gitmo is populated with people who want to kill Americans no matter what. Either that, or the inmates heard about the so-called UN Human Rights Commission demand that Gitmo be shut down, and tried to create an international outcry.

So sad that they were betrayed by of all sources, MargaReuterville.

One of the key strategies of guerilla warfare, especially as taught by the Communists, is to constantly claim victory, regardless of the truth, because it demoralizes the enemy and can sway popular opinion against the war. UAE diplomat Naji al-Noaimi. Released

Good News!

Yahoo News :His brother, Mohammed al-Nuaimi, said the family had been told by the government that he was free, but they did not know how his release came about.
"The officials just told us that he was released and he was on his way to the embassy," al-Nuaimi said from his home in Dibba, a town in the southern Emirates.
"We have no details on how he has been released."

It could be insurgent leaders were uncomfortable with these illegal terror tactics. Still does not excuse taking him to start with. I like it when it ends this way ,especially after only three days. Reports are no demands (at least the public ones) were met.

Iran to Mark Non-Muslims Clothing.

So you thought my comparison of the Nazis led by Adolph Hitler and IranÂ’s ruling government led by President Ahmadinejad was a bit far fetched? Think Again!

Free Republic : Human rights groups are raising alarms over a new law passed by the Iranian parliament that would require the country's Jews and Christians to wear coloured badges to identify them and other religious minorities as non-Muslims.
"This is reminiscent of the Holocaust," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis."
Iranian expatriates living in Canada yesterday confirmed reports that the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical "standard Islamic garments."
The law, which must still be approved by Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.
Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.
"There's no reason to believe they won't pass this," said Rabbi Hier. "It will certainly pass unless there's some sort of international outcry over this."

I know, Iran can save help out their budget by adopting the old Nazi patches. They are hip, already designed and cheap to make, Then force non-Muslims to buy them as a Dhimmi tax. This Islamic rule thingy is like Nazism for Dummies.

Imagine if our president asked for a strict conservative Christian national Dress code? Also it seems if Muslims are Â“in uniformÂ” it gets pretty easy to tell who Â“the othersÂ” are. Including Muslims who resist this mandate. The fact that this proposal was even made speaks volumes.

Before Ahmadinejad took office many women were wearing western clothes and the scarves covering their hair were getting smaller and smaller. Now they've gone backwards and pushed women back to wearing the hijab. There have been more instances of women being beaten in the street by police, Taliban style, for showing an arm or an ankle. things certtainly aren't getting better there. They're getting worse.

There are reports that these things are a possible interpretation, One guy says it's wrong some other ones say it's right. Laws are open to interpretaion and regulation/policy as well. Good point, perhaps the cloth marking each individual faith is an exaggeration of the original story, but like you said, if the "Muslim uniform" part of the story is true, it would have the same effect as it is unlikely the non-Muslims would be wearing it. I'm not upset with the liberals for exposing the parts that were questionable. I'm glad they did. Otherwise I would be misled. Both sides have the same problem. The Rove issue comes to mind. They wanted Rove so bad tehy jumped the gun a bit. But seems by now thye have corrected. I saw the guy post about his mistake yesterday. No problem with it. He tried and that's all you can do.

It is a very fair account by a previously pro-war guy about how we got here in Iraq. Won all kinds of awards, and justly so. Even after reading Rise of the Vulcans, which is also excellent, I still learned a huge amount about Wolfowitz, Feith, and how they did similar things to what is described above--didn't trust the intel professionals, despite numerous warnings. Ran their own intel shop to get the answers. Did what Haydn criticized in his testimony about Feith--deductive and not inductive intel.

Or is that again an example of anyone can become wealthy in America if he chooses? Poor! Ones own choosing. Thats why I don't cry for them.

UAE Diplomatic Hostage in Video

al-Jazeera has aired a video of UAE diplomat Naji al-Noaimi. They threaten his life if their demands are not met. They demand that the UAE close itÂ’s Iraqi embassy and also shut down that Dubai broadcast station al-Fayha be shut down.

Reuters :DUBAI, May 18 (Reuters) - An Iraqi group on Thursday issued a video of a United Arab Emirates diplomat kidnapped in Baghdad, and demanded that the Gulf state close its embassy in Iraq, Al Jazeera television reported.
The channel aired the video from the group calling itself Islam's Banner which showed a man standing next to a wall. No audio could be heard on the brief footage.
The group issued a 24-hour ultimatum for its demands to be met.
Diplomat Naji al-Noaimi was snatched on Tuesday following a short drive from the embassy to visit a colleague. His driver was shot in the kidnapping and later died of his wounds.
"The group demanded in a message accompanying the video ... that the UAE embassy in Baghdad be closed and al-Fayha channel which broadcasts from Dubai be shut down," Al Jazeera said.

The group name seems to me a cover for an al-Qeada type terror cell. This has all the hallmarks of previous kidnappings only the name is new.

3 It's not Al-Qeada. A lot of people mistake the Islamic Jihad Army for Al-Qeada becuase it's media figure head 'Abu Musab al-Zarqawi' got all fired up during one of his taping sessions and began spouting off about how they were throwing thier lot in with Bin Laden and Al-Qeada. Bush was quick to trumpet this detail due to the fact that his Bin Laden - Hussien connection had already run dry. In the months that followed however, Bin Laden released a tape that responded to Al-Zarqawi's declaration and illustrated a difference in ideals between the two factions. The Islamic Jihad Army never again reffered to themselves as Al-Qeada and went even further to consistantly state that they were not responsable for 9/11. Thier organization is very loose. Loose enough to have differences of opinion that go on for some time before the administration corrects it. There have even been a few occasions when hostages were released at the last minute not becuase thier demands were met but instead becuase a higher up pulled the plug at the very last minute. It would therefor outline the difficulty of contacting smaller squads if you beleave they have kidnapped say... A human rights activist instead of a Haliburton employee. BTW- Don't bad mouth arabs. When you talk about killing them you are basically justifying 9/11 to the rest of the world. Be ashamed. Be very ashamed.
