Can We Talk?

Ayaan Hirsi to liberal group.

Via Atlas Shrugs : “My criticism of the West, especially of liberals, is that they do take freedom for granted,” Ms. Ali responded. She noted that Western Europeans born after World War II are unused to conflict. “They have lost the instinct to recognize that there can be such a thing as an enemy or a threat to freedom, and that’s what I’m witnessing in Europe now,” she stated. “[There is] a pacifist ideology that violence should never be used in any circumstances, and so we should talk and talk and talk. Even when your opponent tells you, ‘I don’t want to talk to you, I want to destroy you,’ the reaction is, ‘Please, let’s talk about the fact that you want to destroy me!’”

Abu Muscab al-Zaqueery Bloopers

Fearsome Mujahadbeen can't operate cool assault weapon in video.

ABCNEWS (video bloopers here): Lynch said Zarqawi decided not to publicize the piece, which shows him decked out in New Balance sneakers. In it, he said, Zarqawi had trouble firing his automatic weapon and needed assistance from an aide, and his associates "do things like grab the hot barrel of the machine gun and burn themselves."
LOL! The little fat fool wears designer infidel sneakers too.

Fox's Video is a bit better but slow loading.

UPDATE by Rusty:

Royalty paid to al Qaeda by al Jazeera for propaganda video: $5k
Abu Musab al Zarqawi blooper reel: priceless

What's so interesting about this is that it comes on the heels of several academic studies suggesting that the best way to discredit an insurgency group is to make fun of them. I. Kid. You. Not.

Role Reversal Honor Killing

What goes around comes around I always say. I detect the odor of sweet, sweet irony here.

ME Times: Pakistani police have charged a 45-year-old woman with beheading her husband with a dagger and chopping up his body after he planned to take a fourth wife, officials said on Wednesday.

Majeeda Khatoon lopped off her spouse's head, cut off his legs with the help of relatives and dumped the body parts in a sewer in Gulshan-e-Hadeed on the outskirts of the southern city of Karachi, police said.

"The victim was said to bear a passion for women and Khatoon, who was already fed up with her husband's extramarital activities, got annoyed when he said he was going for a fourth marriage," said another police officer, Akhtar Shah BangashÂ…

Â…Pakistani men are permitted to take up to four wives under Islam, although most do not.

More often it is women who are subjected to brutal "honor punishments" including rape and murder for alleged adultery or for bringing supposed shame on their families.

WhatÂ’s good for the gooseÂ…

Blogs Not Trustworthy, But Neither is Mainstream Media New Survey Reveals

A multi-country survey commissioned by the BBC & Reuters reveals that people in the U.S. and the U.K. are generally skeptical about the information read on blogs, but that they are also distrustful of the traditional mainstream media. The good news, though, is that the internet is gaining popularity as a source for news and seems to be more trusted by the younger generation.

Reuters:

The research found that just 25 percent of respondents said they trusted blogs, while 23 percent said they did not trust them....

Online sources were, for example, the first choice among 19 percent aged between 18 and 24, compared to just 3 percent in the 55-64 age range.

"But although it is changing, our research perhaps suggests that this change in Internet usage may not be as fast as some who have been investing in it believe," Miller said.

There is also a stark contrast between those in the U.S. and the U.K. and those living in the rest of the countries surveyed. Citizens of the two English speaking countries are far more distrustful of the mainstream media than are citizens in developing countries. From another Reuters article on the survey:
A 10-country opinion poll for Reuters, the BBC and the Media Centre found British and U.S. consumers out on a limb when it comes to public levels of trust in the media.

Overall trust in the media in Britain has bounced back over the past four years, from a low of 29 percent trusting in 2002 to 47 percent today. But this is still below the 10-country average of 63 percent.

Americans emerged as the most critical of the news media's balance, with 69 percent disagreeing that the media reports all sides of a story.

A similar proportion, 68 percent, thought the media covered too many "bad news" stories.

And how does Reuters interpret why Americans and Brits are so skeptical of their news?
"In this research we did not probe exact reasons for the lower levels of trust, but our instincts as researchers tell us that it's because the U.S. and UK are two countries at war," he added.

The low levels of trust may, he said, be related to perceptions in the U.S. that the media is too close to the government on issues relating to the Iraq war.

This is a typical Leftwing response, which has no basis in reality. Survey after survey show that those who work for the MSM are far to the left of the American center. Journalists also report voting for a Democratic Presidential candidate in far greater numbers than the population. If anything, at least for the American side of the pond, distrust is a product of a media establishment out of touch with mainstream American values--not because the media is to the right, but because it is to the left!

What is so silly about the al Reuters explanation is that the data show that Americans and Brits trust their governments more than they trust the media. So, why would people distrust the media less if it was because they were too cozy with the government?

Further, if the Reuters explanation had any merit, why would the most trusted MSM source in America be the right-of-center FOX News and the centrist CNN (both with 11% in the poll)? In the U.K., the most trusted source of news is the government owned and operated BBC, which 32% say is the most trustworthy!

Moussaoui's Mother Blames Racist Americans for Conviction, France May Seek Tranfer

The mother of would-be terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui is blaming racism in the United States for her sons conviction. Because, you know, it's not like he confessed to plotting to murder American citizens or anything. That, and the fact that he plead guilty really had nothing to do with it.

We now see that the propensity for bizarre statements is a family trait in the Moussaoui family.

Fox News:

"I don't share the ideas and the words of my son in the court," she said, but added that it was "because of his words, his color, his race, that he was sentenced to life."
Yeah, right, words like, "I am al Qaeda" and "I plead guilty." Those words.
Immediately following Wednesday's verdict, El Wafi said on French radio that she felt "dead" and that he was convicted of crimes he didn't commit. She called it "the worst thing that could happen to a mother."
No, the worst thing that could happen to a mother would be for their child to die at the hands of terrorist scumbags like your son, el Wafi. Or maybe they didn't teach you that down at the local mosque?

And it looks like France might take el Wafi's request that Zacarias Moussaoui be transferred to a French prison seriously. Believe it or not, this might be a good thing. My understanding of French prisons is that the conditions in them are absolutely horrible.

Scotsman:

France could at some stage ask the United States to allow Zacarias Moussaoui to serve his life prison sentence in a French jail, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

"A possible demand for transferring Zacarias Moussaoui could be looked at within this framework," Foreign Ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei said at an electronic press briefing.

"But in any case, we have to wait for the American justice system to provide a definitive sentence and to define the conditions of the sentence," he added.

What the Moussaoui case shows is that the American court system is simply not prepared to try terrorists. It seems to me that Moussaoui, and many others we label terrorists, would have been called a 'sabateour' in previous wars.

During WWII there were cases of German sabateours 'invading' U.S.. From the FBI:

The purpose of the invasions was to strike a major blow for Germany by bringing the violence of war to our home ground through destruction of America's ability to manufacture vital equipment and supplies and transport them to the battlegrounds of Europe; to strike fear into the American civilian population, and diminish the resolve of the United States to overcome our enemies.
What happened to these 8 men who snuck into the U.S., dressed as civilians so as not to be detected, plotted to blow up major industrial centers and symbols of American power?
By June 27, 1942, all eight saboteurs had been arrested without having accomplished one act of destruction. Tried before a Military Commission, they were found guilty. One was sentenced to life imprisonment, another to thirty years, and six received the death penalty, which was carried out within a few days.
That is how you deal with terrorists.

Mexico Backs Away from Drug Legalization

In a turnaround from what was previously reported, Mexican President Vicente Fox has balked on the drug legalization law.

From WashingtonPost.com:

Mexican President Vicente Fox backed off signing a drug decriminalization bill that the United States warned could result in "drug tourism" and increased availability of narcotics in American border communities.

Fox reversed course Wednesday and said he was sending the bill back to Congress for changes, just one day after his office had said he would sign it into law. The measure would have dropped criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs.

Fox's statement said he will ask for corrections "to make it absolutely clear in our country, the possession of drugs and their consumption are, and will continue to be, a criminal offense."

Really? I'm confused. Fox wants the law which drops criminal penalties for possession to clearly state that drug possession is a criminal offense.

It doesn't make sense to me. Of course, I'm a guy who thinks "law-abiding illegal alien" is a contradiction.

Moussaoui Gets Life: Travesty of Justice

A jury has sentenced Zacarias Moussaoui to life in prison for his part in the 9/11 conspiracy. News reports just breaking the story. Updates soon.

Moussaoui deserved death. This is a travesty of justice.

UPDATE: NY TIMES:

“America, you lost!” Mr. Moussaoui shouted as he was led from the courtroom after the verdict was announced.
UPDATE: Fuzzy logic alert from friends and readers. So, you're happy that Moussaoui got life in prison because killing him would have made him a martyr? That does make a kind of superficial sense, but think about it. By that logic, no jihadi should ever be killed!

Ayman al-Zawahiri shouldn't be killed because that would make him a martyr. Osama bin Laden's cave shouldn't be bombed because getting 72 virgins is what he wants anyway. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi wants to be a martyr, making him live in the empty quarter is a far harsher punishment.

Allah agrees with the above, "Does that apply to Bin Laden too? If he turns around tomorrow and says the worst thing we could to him is supply him with lots of prostitutes, do we call the Mustang Ranch?"

UPDATE: He won't be kept in GP--general population--so unfortunately there won't be enough time for him to become someone's "bitch" or get a shiv in him. Instead, he'll have a private jail cell for the next 30 years, where he'll have a Koran delivered to him by a prison guard with white gloves every morning, he'll be given a prayer mat, and he'll have an imam come visit him once a week to discuss his misunderstanding of the word "jihad" in the Koran.

Video of announcement.

MSNBC:

A federal jury rejected the death penalty for al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui on Wednesday and decided he must spend life in prison for his role in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history.

After seven days of deliberation, the nine men and three women rebuffed the governmentÂ’s appeal for death for the only person charged in this country in the four suicide jetliner hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001.

The story actually uses the word "rebuffed" to describe what one single juror could have done.

Here is a link to the complicated jury form. The jury had to answer all of these questions in order to give Moussaoui the death sentence. This is worse than doing taxes.

UPDATE: Bluto reminds me that the jury had to be unanimous. Do you think you could get a group of people to unanimously answer in the affirmative to the complicated questions asked in the above form? It's like getting two accountants to agree on a 1040--impossible!

I've got some advice for Moussaoui: watch your back in prison.

Others: Joyner, "Incredible. If Moussaoui doesnÂ’t deserve to die for his crimes, almost no one currently on death row does."

Allahpundit will have a link to the answered jury questionnaire shortly. Ace thinks that one of the jurors might have lied about their opposition to the death penalty. It's a temptation to think that this guy so obviously deserves the death penalty that a juror must either be insane or have lied about being "death penalty qualified" to get on the jury. It seems more probably to me that our federal laws just don't contemplate a person like Moussaoui being tried in a court of law.

Stop the ACLU

SoCal Pundit: This is a sad day in the War on Terror.

Say Uncle: I think itÂ’s for the best not to make a martyr of him.

UPDATE by VINNIE:

First off, while I had hoped for the death penalty, our appeals process may have made it merely a symbolic judgment. I don't know. God only gave me 20/20 vision in hindsight. In foresight, I could use trifocals. Big, coke-bottle lens trifocles.

But, whatever your thoughts on the sentencing, the Moussaoui trial gave us a gift. That gift is the record of the trial.

You may view the exhibits presented at the trial here.

I chronicled the worst of them here.

No matter what you think of the sentencing, the trial, the jurors, always think this:

Never forget, never forgive.

Louis Rukeyser Dead at 73

When I was just a wee lad my Grandfather on my Fathers side always watched two programs that stuck with me. One was the McLaughlin Group, the other was Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser. When Wall Street Week dumped the ailing Rukeyser for two empty TV heads from Money Magazine I stopped watching.

NPR : John Ydstie has a remembrance of straight-talking business commentator Louis Rukeyser. The author, columnist and television host died Tuesday. He was 73.
Rukeyser.com has a short biography here. Lou I'll miss you

Update : Rukeyser.com :

As many of you know, Louis Rukeyser died May 2 at his home in Connecticut. We have lost a great man who was an inspiration to millions of investors — and to those of us who had the honor of working with him.

Online Integrity: Protecting The Privacy of Bloggers

Josh Trevino has come up with a voluntary, nonpartisan and nonideological code, meant to bring a basic measure of decency to online discourse. As one of the last of the anonymous bloggers, I wholeheartedly endorse it.

I've never understood the need to make claims of authority when writing online. Either what I write makes sense, or it does not. As long time readers of this blog know, I never write anything on this blog which is related to my academic research. My graduate school training may have helped me learn to write, but it did not train me to write about terrorism, propaganda, or South Park. My field of expertise usually comes as quite a shock to those meeting "Rusty" for the first time.

You do not need to know who I am. I am not Dr. Rusty Shackleford. For those of you who know the real me and have helped me keep my identity private, I thank you. Even though I have not even met some of you personally, I consider you friends.

There have been various attempts to "out" me. For the most part, these efforts are attempts to shut me up. No untenured college professor would dare to say some of the things I've said over the years--even when they are in tongue-in-cheek. Thus, trying to dig into the personal lives of public figures is a way to squelch what they really think.

The tactic may be familiar for readers of John Aravosis' America Blog. Aravosis and his readers have made it their mission to "out" gay public figures who have taken public stances against issues they support. They justify this as pointing out "hypocrisy"--a gay Congressman is a hypocrite if he doesn't support gay marriage and thus "deserves" to be outed. But really, this is nothing more or less than the online equivalent of blackmail---either change your policy stance or we will reveal to the world embarrassing information. Closetted gay Congressman who agree with Aravosis need not feel threatened. Their secret is safe.

At the most nefarious level, though, trying to "out" anonymous bloggers can be dangerous. The recent online attacks against my long-time blog friend Aaron is evidence that the various death threats I've received in the past should be taken seriously. Thus, for those of us who use humor to take on the Islamists and jihadis, our anonymity is also our shield against potentially violent repercussions. While I don't think most jihadis have the means to carry out their threats, it is possible that some of them do. Yet another reason for me to remain anonymous.

You can find the online statement of principles here. Here is the part that attracted me:

Persons seeking anonymity or pseudonymity online should have their wishes in this regard respected as much as is reasonable.
Indeed.

Backlash

From the Washington Post:

Herndon voters yesterday unseated the mayor and two Town Council members who supported a bitterly debated day-labor center for immigrant workers in a contest that emerged as a mini-referendum on the turbulent national issue of illegal immigration.

Residents replaced the incumbents with challengers who immediately called for significant changes at the center. Some want to bar public funds from being spent on the facility or restrict it to workers living in the country legally. Others want it moved to an industrial site away from the residential neighborhood where it is located.

Regime Change Iran

Yesterday I saw this interview with the Reza Pahlavi, son of the late Shah of Iran. He says he is working to topple the Islamist Government of Iran through massive labor demonstrations. He says he seeks to create a new Democratic state there.

Human Events Online : Reza Pahlavi, son of the late Shah of Iran, told the editors of HUMAN EVENTS last week that in the next two to three months he hopes to finalize the organization of a movement aimed at overthrowing the Islamic regime in Tehran and replacing it with a democratic government.

He believes the cause is urgent because of the prospect that Iran may soon develop a nuclear weapon or the U.S. may use military force to preempt that. He hopes to offer a way out of this dilemma: a revolution sparked by massive civil disobedience in which the masses in the streets are backed by elements of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Pahlavi, who lives in exile in the United States, said he has been in contact with elements of the Revolutionary Guard that would be willing to play such a role, and activists who could help spark the civil disobedience.

He also said that the U.S. and other governments can help by imposing “smart sanctions” on the leaders of Iranian regime, but he categorically opposes U.S. military intervention...

...You think you can exploit this to turn some elements of the Revolutionary Guards against the regime?

Yes, for a number of reasons. Because like in any totalitarian system, they know that at the end theyÂ’ll fall. The question is, how do they negotiate their exit strategy? No. 2 is because a lot of their families are not as wealthy as we think. There are some preferred ones, but many are still having to make ends meet. We have ranked officers who have to drive taxicabs at three oÂ’clock in the morning, as a major or colonel returning from base, because they donÂ’t have enough money to pay the rent. The disenchantment is there.

So what you see happening is a general strike, people going into the streets, refusing to work, calling for the overthrow of the regime, and then their being backed—?

Sustained. Sustained.

And then being sustained by significant elements of the Revolutionary Guards who say, “You’re gone”?

And IÂ’m talking about a blitzkrieg of media supporting, like the BBC did before the revolution, which was practically announcing the night before where there would be a demonstration the next day. This is not myth, it is fact.

Are you in contact with some of the commanders of these [elements]?

Absolutely. Absolutely. And in fact, they keep on saying that we are being under-utilized, we have a role to play, we know the time for it, but we cannot just take the initiative. They are in No ManÂ’s Land. You have to understand.

I was skeptical but labor unrest in Iran was reported on the very same day this interview was released. I think itÂ’s an avenue worth supporting. Of course the problem is the American imperialism/meddling perception(might as well bring it up they will). But we can work from within. If this man is correct in that support for the Mullahs is as superficial as he claims. In fact get this man in and Iran can build all the reactors its wants because the threat of misuse is removed.

Hitchens vs Cole The Saga Continues

My money is on Christopher. Remember my Hitchens rule, odd no, even Yes. Juan I read now and then but after a while he comes off as one of those oh my holy brain academic stereotypes.

Updated 05/04: Hitchens eats Cole for breakfast!

Radioblogger :Hewit to Hitchens: Why don't you tell people what's going on here?

It's a blog war. Well, some of your listeners may know of Professor Cole of the University of Michigan. He is acclaimed, at least by himself, expert on matters Shiia, particularly, and he also says he's fluent in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. And for all I know, he is. But he's 10th rate, and he's a sordid apologist for Islamist terrorism, and for Islamist terrorist regimes. And I've been on his case for a while......Professor Juan Cole does not know what he is talking about, in any language.

Ohh that's gotta hurt.
Cole responds with a left jab narrowly missing Hitchens: Hitchens not Drunk, Only an Asinine Thief
It's toe to toe now! Cole seems to be tiring. I'm not sure he can make another round. There's the bell for round two. Hitchens looks fresh, he seems unaffected by Juan's weak jabs. Angleo Dundee now screaming at Cole in his corner...

Just wanted to let you know that ±280,000,000 legal American citizens did not march in the streets demanding open borders and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Just about the same number didn't march in the streets claiming that Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Colorado still belong to Mexico.

Euthanasia Delayed For Now

On April 25, I wrote about a woman who was about to be euthanized by a Houston hospital's ethics committee, over the objections of the woman herself and her family. Good news, at least temporarily.

From the Washington Times:

A Texas hospital has agreed to delay taking a severely ill woman off life support, following a failed plan to transfer her to an Illinois nursing home.

St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital had invoked the state's futile-care law, which allows hospitals to take some patients off life support with 10 days notice to the families, the Houston Chronicle reported.

German Hostages Rene Braeunlich and Thomas Nitzschke Freed

Good news indeed! These men were last seen in a terrorist video released on January 27th. The terrorist group called Tawhid and Sunnah brigade had threatened to kill them unless Germany met their demands which were that Germany cut off all diplomatic and trading ties with the new Iraqi government.

Reuters via Alertnet :The two men were abducted on Jan. 24 outside their workplace in the industrial town of Baiji, 180 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said they had been freed without warning and appeared to be unharmed.

"I am very pleased to inform you that the two kidnapped men from Leipzig, Rene Braeunlich and Thomas Nitzschke, have been freed today," Steinmeier said in a statement. He said the men, being looked after in Germany's embassy in Baghdad, were expected to return home on Wednesday.

"After spending more than three months under inhumane conditions they are in German care," added Steinmeier, who was on an official visit to Chile.

Since the kidnapping, hundreds of people had gathered in their hometown of Leipzig, eastern Germany, for weekly vigils, placing flowers and lighting candles.

Rusty said in his January 27th post, “We pray for their speedy release.” Our prayers and the prayers of these men’s families and of the German people have been answered. And may they have a safe and speedy journey back to Germany to their loved ones.

Update : Braeunlich and Nitzschke have arrived in Germany and have given a brief statement. The German government refused to release details on how their release was secured.

ABCNEWS : "We are very happy to still be alive, which we don't take for granted," Nitzschke said.

"I am happy to be back home," Braeunlich said. "We had a difficult time."

After their statements, they boarded a minivan that government officials said would take them to a private reunion with their families.

The pair were released Tuesday after being held hostage since Jan. 24. The Foreign Ministry declined to provide details on how the pair were freed including whether a ransom was paid citing safety reasons.

Sounds like they may have paid a ransom. I hope not. The release could be a product of ongoing negitiations between the Iraqi government and some insurgent groups. more...
