ACLU Challenges US Sovereignty

Brandishing a list of 51,000 signatures as backup for their campaign of innuendo and half-truths against American interrogation of captured terrorists, the American Civil Liberties Union is demanding that the US State Department subordinate itself to the UN Committee Against Torture:

"Instead of denying the systemic abuse of detainees confirmed by its own documents, the U.S. government must own up to the truth and take full responsibility," said Amrit Singh, an attorney with the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project who is currently observing the committee's examination of the U.S. report in Geneva. "We hope that the Committee Against Torture will hold the government accountable for the torture and abuse of detainees both within the United States and abroad."

It's odd that an organization that stuffs money into its members' pockets by defending the indefensible should tell a United States government department that it has no right to defend itself from the ACLU's own trumped up charges. Of course, the ACLU is still smarting from the knowledge that its own communications with international terrorist organizations may have been monitored by the NSA.

WTW Barbecue

One of the ways Howie had been fighting high gas prices is I had a deep freeze full of deer. I had one big ass roast left. Monday I rested from a 64 hour week and celebrated my first death threat by having a glass of fine homemade wine and slapping that sucker on the Barbecue for 7 hours, tasty. 1 Howie, BBQ deer roast? Say it ain't so. BBQ the brisket, make steaks, sausage, and deer hamburger out of the rest. BBQ raccoons every time, as the taste of the meat is better when hidden by BBQ sause. And the last bit of deer meat, and season is several months away. Better crank up that 4x4 and do some night riding in hopes of getting some fast food. Haha, great post, Howie!

2 I had never done a deer roast so I gave it a try. It's was pretty good really. Good excuse to sit by the grill all damn day too. We had some smaller roasts and we did those in the oven and used the leftovers for stew. I have no idea what the guy at the locker plant was thinking. This thing was huge would nto fit in the pan. So... Anyway Grandpa's chest type deep freeze was stuffed a fe weeks ago with. One cow. Two pigs, Two deer and about 50 lbs of fish. He was here take this and that and some of this. He's always ahead of me. We'll be OK.

5 JJ: Sausage? Surely you jest. What a waste of perfectly good venison. The parts most folks use for sausage I either bar-be-que [ribs, brisket] or cut into 1/2" cubes to make chili. The rest of the deer is made into steaks/chops and some small roasts. I'm with you about B-B-Q ing roast, though. Pot roast, iron pot, low and slow. If you're short, Howie, I still have plenty from last season that I'm trying hard to deplete before the season. Can't let the wife think that I don't need to go to the camp for a week or so.

7 Yeah, Graeme, raccoon is pretty poor eating, but my dad always said, "if you kill it, you eat it". No wasting meat in our family. That's why I quit hunting raccoons in about the 10th grade. And Charlie, I had a guy process some of my meat into sausage, and it is the best sausage I have ever had. Very lean, with cajun seasoning, and is it ever heavenly. Even the Islamos can eat deer sausage, not that I would give them any, mind you.

8 That clears things up for me JJ. I just wondered why, with an abundance of fish and game in Texas, you were running around hunting raccoons. I'm not one for the unusual varieties of wild game. As a kid I tried armadillo, but I suffered an allergic reaction (not sure if it was the meat or the seasonings) so I stay away from them. That makes me one of the few odd ones in my family. I've got relatives who love making and eating stewed possum.

9 Graeme, are they from the American South? A possum eater who tried armadillo sounds like a true blue, or should I say gray, confederate. Where in the wide world did you get armadillo, Graeme? And as a kid growing up, there was hardly anything more fun than staying up all night listening to the hounds running and then treeing a coon. Then it was helter-skelter through the woods to see who could be the first one to get the coon. After I had to eat a couple, I always let my friends win the race, but I enjoyed the hunt, and staying out all night by the campfire, and shooting the breeze, and smoking cigars, and drinking Lone Star long necks(don't tell my mama I did that), and Lisa and Joanie sneaking out of their house and joining us, and, well, one does have to be discreet about some things, right.

7 Thought experiment: How would history have been different if, instead of funding the mujahideen, which eventually gave rise to the Taliban and 9/11, we had helped the Russians stomp them flat? As much as dead talibs warm my heart, would this have slowed or stopped Russia's collapse, leaving us still in the Cold War? How would a different decision at this temporal juncture have turned out? 10 Troopx. Looking back the fall of the USSR was a problem. They fell too hard and that left a vaccum. My favorite saying is that if the USSR were confronted with islamofacists they would get out the water cannons and say, "There is no God, Back to work!". So I'd prefer a cold war with the commies to the islamic fascists. The commies at least were "civilized" enough you could kind of depend on them to have self preservation at heart. You can deal with em. We should have helped a Russia a bit more afterward. The Islamic fascists are unpredictable hot head idiots. More dangerous I think and even worse as far as human rights. I think the US and Russia should get into it again. The cold war arrangement kept islamic fascists in check. For instance if they had gotten out of hand in Afghanistan while the Russians were still there you could just stop helping and leave them to the dogs. There were alsays higher powers and everyone was more worried that the US and Russia would end ti all to screw with either of us much. Oh and while I'm at it Crazy Jew thanks for the insult.

Mass Re-Enlistment Counters MSM/DNC Memes

In a story so far unreported outside of Colorado, soldiers of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, a unit that has borne the brunt of fighting and suffered heavy casualties in Iraq, participated in a mass re-enlistment ceremony last Friday.

From the Denver Post:

Fort Carson - A year ago, as Iraqi fighters detonated a bomb that shattered his convoy, Army Sgt. Gene Braxton led survivors scrambling out of their Humvees in the hot dusty haze to hunt for the triggermen.
Five months later, a bigger roadside bomb rocked the armored vehicle Braxton was in. Reeling from a concussion, he dragged a wounded buddy to safety.
Back in Colorado, Braxton has re-enlisted and will undergo parachute jump training in preparation for a possible third stint of combat duty in Iraq.
The 26-year-old is among 640 Colorado-based 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment soldiers who, in an unusually large mass re-enlistment, have extended their military service. Hundreds participated in a re-enlistment ceremony Friday, standing bolt straight on the shiny wood floor in a Fort Carson gym, raising their right hands and swearing they'd do anything to support and defend the United States.

Of course, this story can't be "real" because Brian Williams hasn't reported it on the Nightly News.

7 Exactly wrong, jd. The latest figures from the DoD show that re-enlistment remains strong, and, in fact, they have exceeded their goals for the last 11 months. Conversely, this puts more pressure on Reserve enlistment, which depends heavily on retired Active Duty personnel. Thus, the mass re-enlistment story is the most dramatic illustration of the overall trend, and a natural for an unbiased press to use as a lead to a story about the overall enlistment picture. The MSM's refusal to publish is a measure of their status as water-carriers for the DNC, which is invested politically in the humiliation and defeat of the United States. As are you.

Harvey said Wednesday. More than 69,500 soldiers re-enlisted in the 12 months ending in September, Harvey said. But last year also was the Army's worst for recruiting since 1999, the last time it failed to meet its annual goal. A study produced for the service in 2004 indicated that a high chance of being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan was keeping many young people away who might have signed up.

12 Hi Fluffy, Interesting WH rebuttal. I don't think it is inaccurate, just incomplete. The goals were lowered, because in 2005, the fact that targets were not met was so embarrassing. Also, incentives were raised by a huge amount from 2005 to 2006, because recruiting and reenlistment were so problematic in 2005. Hey, homo economicus is predictable. If you pay more money for a service, more people will provide it (or, looked at another way, if my friend's brother, who has spent 3 of the 5 years of his marriage overseas deployed, is thinking of reupping, a LOT more cash better be on the table). The left is wrong to say that our military is "broken" but the right is wrong to say that recruitment and reenlistment are just fine. The iraq war is putting a huge strain on our manpower resources, as well as several other types. ****** (this is from June of 05) Although the Army will not release its numbers until Friday, it fell about 25 percent short of its target of signing up 6,700 recruits in May, officials said Wednesday. The gap would have been even wider but for the fact that the target was lowered by 1,350. The Army said it lowered the May target to "adjust for changing market conditions," knowing that the difference will have to be made up in the months ahead. The Army also missed its monthly targets in April, March and February Â— each month worse than the one before. In February it fell 27 percent short; in March the gap was 31 percent, and in April it was 42 percent. "It's like having a persistent drought," said Daniel Goure, a military analyst at the private Lexington Institute. "At some point when you have drought conditions you have to institute water rationing, and that's what you potentially face in the military if it goes on long enough. You would get to a stage where you don't have enough people to staff your organizations." Smackdown in Iran - Khamenei Vetoes Ahmadinejad

(Tehran) Last month, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that women will be allowed in sports stadiums as spectators for the first time since the 1979 Revolution. Ahmadinejad said that women and families should be allowed in public places to promote chastity.

Unfortunately, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final word on matters of state and he disagrees.

"Iran's supreme leader has instructed the government to consider the religious leaders' views and reverse its decision (on letting women into stadiums)," government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham told a news conference. "The government will act based on this instruction," he said.

Therefore, despite all his media-hogging bluster and belligerent declarations, Ahmadinejad is nothing more than a marionette for Ali Khamenei. Of course, a prudent observer is not surprised.

4 Mike, I'm confused. Does this story suggest that Ahmadinejad's power is circumscribed, and therefore his rants about wiping Israel from the pages of history are not to be taken seriously? Or do they indicate that, at the end of the day, Ahmadinejad's actions must be approved by Khamenei, in which case, the absence of correctives to his comments means that he, in fact, speaks for Khamenei and company when he threatens Israel (and talks about nukes, etc.)?

1 Well, that was a bunch of crap. I bet President Bush throws these letters away like I throw away Credit offers. Despite the fallacies (a fancy way of saying lies) in the letter, it seems to contradict itself. Mr. Chomsky decries Bush for toppling Saddam, but later says "History tells us that repressive and cruel governments do not survive," referring to America. It's ridiculous, and unfortunately this dribble gets more credence than it deserves.

4 Hmmm....125 miles, huh, John. That seems pretty close to me, but I live in Texas, and I hear tell that we have counties in Texas bigger than Massachusetts. Back on topic, I sense a moonbat/Islamic convergence in the atmosphere. It needs to be dealt with before it gets out of hand, although I doubt whether the Islamists have much use for the moonbats other than cover for terrorism. This could get interesting if the 2006 elections bend toward the Left.

22 Not sure about school shootings, but I can definitely say there have been no OK City bombings in the last 5 years. We have actually intercepted 2 or 3 Columbine style shootings. I'm not sure at what point Jeff Goldstein became the whipping boy for the Left. Whatever he's doing, I'm jealous.

Exhibit A: Atrios' plan for a progressive tomorrow, when not advocating tax hikes and a return to paper ballots, includes this ditty: Imprison Jeff Goldstein for crimes against humanity for his neverending stupidity

Ouch, calling Jeff stupid. Neener, neener, neerner, Jeff is stupid and I is so smart.

Exhibit B: Thesaurus Rex calls Jeff an asshole. To show in said argument that Jeff is, indeed, an asshole, Rex points readers to Jeff's ode to Klonopin.

Because nothing says asshole more than drug humor.

Exhibit C: Jane Hamsher's diatribe against Jeff, which, to be honest, starts out incoherent and then, well, just goes downhill from there.

I'm sooo smart because I know reallity, while Jeff is sooo dumb because he swallowed the Bush-Rove pill.

Collectively, the three posts add up to a total waste of time. They are no more nor less than a bunch of tired cliches mixed with insults.

So, why did I waste my time reading them? Just to let Jeff know that somebody out here has his back.

Radical Islamic Cleric Abu Qatada is arguing in a British deportation hearing that sending him back to Jordan to face his sentence there is against British law because he could be executed in Jordan. Jordan has agreed not to execute him. The British Government is arguing that Qatada is a security risk. You think?

BBC : A radical Islamic cleric who has been accused of being a leading figure in al-Qaeda was a risk to UK security, a deportation hearing has been told.
Ian Burnett QC, for the home secretary, told the London hearing: "The entirety of the evidence in this case supports the conclusion that the appellant is a danger to national security when everything known about him is assessed."
The UK has signed an agreement with Jordan that anyone sent back there will not be tortured or killed.
Abu Qatada's Abu Qatada's lawyer is expected to argue that the guarantee is inadequate.

2 Europeans, so much more cultured and sophisticated than American's, we're often told -- but like the Cockroach, they refuse to run from the falling foot that defines it's extinction. As a British citizen, I can tell you -- If you don't stop the culture of PC here, America will be much like Europe, where employers are scared any comment made could be construed as sexist, racist or ageist, and self censor everything, or where people handwring over the "humane treatment" of those in society who would kill or main them -- they will invoke these rights for the perpetrator, without a thought for the victim, long in their grave. Drug users will be exalted as 'victims' , and every criminal act can be excused by looking at the criminals past : "Did your Mum not take you on vacation?", "Did your Dad hit you?", "Did you not have a lot of money?" where everyone is a victim of their upbringing, and not responsible for their own actions, guided into their destiny with no choices. It isn't fun, it's partly why I left.

I turned this up last night reading about the Cawnpore massacre of 1857 in which "insurgents" under one Nana Sahib literally butchered 200 women and children and tossed the chunks in a well. The British Army went on a rampage over this. Here is some priceless commentary on the fallout. 8 Oyster, This was written by George MacDonald Fraser in his novel "Flashman in the Great Game," published in 1975. The Flashman series follows a fictional character of the same name through real historical events, such as the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Although the main character never lived, the historical events and setting are so painstakingly researched that many critics--academics among them--have made fools of themselves by assuming they were true memoirs. There's a hidden irony here in that the quoted passage comes out of the mouth of Flashman himself. Flashman is an anti-hero, the antithesis of everything a Victorian British officer was supposed to be. He's depicted as a shameless liar, coward, cheat, drunkard, whoremonger, betrayer, etc., who nevertheless always comes out on top in the end. As evil as he is, he is the only one who can see the hypocricy behind the genteel pose of his countrymen. Good stuff, if you're shopping for a yarn.

In so doing, he ignored a statute that possibly forbade such activity, even though high-profile federal judges had affirmed the statute's validity. The president sought statutory amendments allowing this surveillance but, when no such legislation was forthcoming, he continued the program nonetheless. And when Congress demanded that he disclose details of the surveillance program, the attorney general said, in no uncertain terms, that it would get nothing of the sort.
In short, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt charted a bold course in defending the nation's security in 1940, when he did all of these things.

No, not THE President Roosevelt? Yes. In fact, the article goes on to quote a letter from Roosevelt to J. Edgar Hoover specifically authorizing the surveillance of those that disseminate enemy propaganda--no doubt a reference to the German Bund and many other groups that were actively engaged in trying to keep the U.S. out of the war, i.e. peace activists.

1 Rusty by the Right's standard at that time FDR was Stalin. So what does any of that prove ? Washington was a slave owner blah blah blah. Holding historical figures to present day standards seems to me to be creating easy targets. How about a post instead on something a bit more current, say the disaray in the C.I.A. ? 5 Interesting piece in the Spectator. One key difference that is controlling from then and now is this: Congress has spoken on national security wiretapping, in the FISA case. When Jackson wrote his memos for FDR, there was NO congressional statute addressing this point. As articulated by no lesser light than Jackson in the steel seizure case, when the president acts with statutory authority granted by Congress, it is constitutional unless the constitution directly forbids it. When the Congress hasn't spoken to a matter, it is a gray area, tasking judges with divining where the power rightfully resides. But when the president, given a statutory path to achieve a given end, ignores or thwarts Congress' will, it can ONLY be upheld if the Constitution grants that power to the president strictly. This is tantamount to strict scrutiny, and thus, FDR's actions would have been in zone 2, and Bush's post FISA acts in zone 3. That's a huge difference, in legal terms.

6 Jd, noted and already over-ruled a while ago. Bush's actions fall under the president's wartime powers, and we've seen legal judgments to that effect. Besides which, this is only an issue if you have a deep inner need for that. Or are you going to start complaining when they search your luggage at the airport when you leave or enter the country?

8 FYI Carlos, Stansfield Turner had retired before he was DCI. The last active duty military officer in the poisition was Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter (1947-50). So, the "Carter did it" example of a double standard doesn't apply. Thanks for playing!

10 I don't know what was "overruled". Jackson's steel seizure division of presidential powers? FISA? As you know, there is no explicit grant of wartime emergency powers in the Constitution, which distinguishes it from most constitutions. There are statutory examples of powers that grow in war, and Congress and the courts have treated the president deferentially. But Bobby Inman got it right yesterday, yet another intel/law expert who says the president broke the law when he ignored FISA. There is another side to the debate, but it is hardly as simplistic as the Spectator makes it out to be.

Jihadis Break Internet Again

Looks like some one broke the internet again this morning. All of mu.nu and blogspot were down for awhile.

I mentioned the other day that we had been getting a slough of death threats following a mention of The Jawa Report over at Islamonline. My first reaction is that we were the victim of a denial of service attack out of Saudi Arabia. The reason that I am suspicious is that the Islamonline post also mentions jihadi hacker 020, who also took over Aaron's Rantblog once again today.

Here is a screenshot from the message he left at Aaron's hacked site today:

Hey, 020, nice try. But I'd be a little jumpy if I were you. Who is that knocking on your door as we speak.........???

4 Rusty: I'm afraid the Government does not have the will to try, and execute any of the Al-Qaeda operatives they have in custody (even ones directly connected to the September 11th plot) just like no one gets executed for treason anymore. One can only hope they have a "private" military tribuneral that we hear about two years after the Al-Qaeda guys are molding in their graves, otherwise the Left is goine to insist on civilian trials for all the ones captured so far (In fact they are all over Bush's case already about not trying them in court)
