Australia to Crack Down on Hoons

Tougher anti-hoon laws planned
March 06, 2006
THE West Australian Government is planning tougher anti-hoon legislation in a bid to crack down on road rage and reckless driving.
Premier Alan Carpenter said today that amendments to the state's anti-hoon laws would be introduced into Parliament during its first session this year.
Police would be able to impound the cars of drivers who endangered other road users or caused criminal damage to their vehicles as part of road rage incidents, he said.

In a possibly related story, a recent poll shows that nearly two thirds of Australians believe there is underlying racism in the country.

Whether or not the story is related depends on just what the hell a "hoon" is.

12 I gotta agree with Dave. Hoons are a social menace. 'Hoons' are also very different from car. Car enthusiasts generally show responsibility in how they drive and where they choose to open their cars up. For a hoon the car is merely a way of gaining attention, hence the blinding paint and overall obnoxiousness of their creations. If you're not sure if you're a hoon or not, check out those new Volkswagen GTi commercials. If you dress like that and your car looks like that, you're a hoon and VW is making fun of you. I hope the Missus gets to take the Sierra off roading, JJ. Fair is fair, after all.

16 The missus hates my truck, Graeme, saying that it is like driving a tank. Compared to her Maxima, well, it is, but the Maxima doesn't quite make it when there is serious hunting and hauling to do. However, she does like to drive my son's Toyota Tacoma. After looking at some photos of those hoons, I am more in the car enthusiast category, as I like to open up the Maxima on the Interstate Highway system where I don't interfere with other drivers. Especially in rural Arkansas where I can really open it up and see what the Maxima will do. I chickened out at 130 mph, which would be about 200 kph, I think.

What if They Gave a Civil War and Nobody Came?

Ralph Peters of the New York Post has been scouring Baghdad, looking for the civil war. As Peters writes, it's being hidden well:

I'M trying. I've been trying all week. The other day, I drove another 30 miles or so on the streets and alleys of Baghdad. I'm looking for the civil war that The New York Times declared. And I just can't find it.
Maybe actually being on the ground in Iraq prevents me from seeing it. Perhaps the view's clearer from Manhattan. It could be that my background as an intelligence officer didn't give me the right skills.

Former Daily Tar Heel columnist Jillian Bandes and Student Congress Rep. Kris Wampler will hold a rally at UNC monday to condemn Friday's attack and to protest the news media's reluctance to label it "terrorism":

Israeli Anti-Ballistic Missile System

Arrow 2 anti-ballistic missile (Jerusalem) In the aftermath of the Gulf War, Israel embarked on a project to develop a first-line missile defense system. The result is the Arrow 2.

Israel's Arrow 2 anti-ballistic missile system is capable of intercepting and destroying any Iranian missiles, even were they to carry nuclear warheads, a high-ranking IDF officer told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
While Iran is Israel's most serious strategic and existential threat, the country, he said confidently, was sufficiently protected by the Arrow, which plays a major role in maintaining Israel's protective envelope.
"We will shoot all of [Iran's missiles] down," he told the Post. "The Arrow knows how to intercept the Shihab missile."

The Arrow 2 can detect even a missile carrying a split warhead and armed with decoys. Last December, it successfully intercepted an incoming rocket simulating an Iranian Shihab-3 missile. Two Arrow batteries with hundreds of missiles are said to be operational, one protecting Tel Aviv and one protecting the northern part of Israel.

8 dave, good question, and one that has yet to be fully answered by the SCOTUS. Handguns have been banned in certain jurisdictions such as Washington, D.C. and cities in Illinois and California. There may be other examples. However, the 2nd Amendment has so far prevented the outright ban of all firearms such as what we have seen in Britain and Australia, and to a lesser degree in Canada. What the SCOTUS will decide in the future is unclear, and that is why it is so important to have strict constutionists on the SCOTUS rather than liberals who seem to think the Constitution can be changed by judicial fiat. We shall see in our lifetimes how this plays out, but I am more hopeful now that there are at least 2 new conservative justices on the Court.

11 I grew up with guns. My dad made sure that we understood and had respect for guns. He completely removed the fear and ignorance that so many suffer from in regards to firearms. He took us out in the everglades for target practice often growing up. It was fun and exciting. Because of him I can take my Glock apart completely, clean it and reassemble it. I've never hunted though. I just don't have it in me. I'm sure if I was starving I'd kill something with a quickness, but as long as the grocery store is nearby and I have a dollar in my pocket I won't be shooting at anything but a painted target ..... or a burglar. 12 Dave, The Second Amendment only restricts the federal government. Some amendments have been "incorporated." You can search "incorporation doctrine." States can ban firearms unless there is a state constitutional provision to the contrary. Only then do you get into federal and state case law. 6 The levee system was never really 'designed'; rather, it sort of evolved and grew over more than a century. Sometimes the levees were added on to without very good information on the preceding construction. Different groups designed, built and maintained different parts of the system over all those years, and even today. The Army Corps of Engineers has for some time had oversight authority on new design and construction (and seem to have not done it all that well), but actual construction and maintainance has always been in the hands of local political groups. Levee failures below the Industrial Canal seem to have been the result of just way too much water for too little levee - the things just washed out when topped. There seems to have been some degree of design and construction shortcuts there (poor soil type used, whether by design or otherwise) but it probably didn't matter - the areas would have flooded if they were built like the Hoover Dam. The canal levees that broke and flooded the main part of New Orleans seem to have collapsed under the pressure of the water - they weren't 'topped' by rising water, nor were they just washed out by water flowing over the top. They collapsed. Poor design? Seems at least partly to blame. Poor construction? No proof, but given local political corruption I would be surprised if it was not a factor. Poor maintainance? For sure. Dredging canals too deep and close. Failure to find pre-storm leaks (evidence of weak points), or even act on them when they were reported. It doesn't look like things are likely to change either. NOTHING could have been done between when Katrina entered the Gulf and when the water flooded the city that would have reduced the ultimate damage by a nickel. It would have taken a week or more even if you KNEW exactly what was going to happen and why (which obviously no one did know.) There's plenty to blame Bush for, but this is just not one of those things.

8 The taxpayer should not have to pay for the rebuilding of NO when we all know that a hurricane in the Cat3-5 range can form in the Gulf and hit NO every year. The land in and around NO cannot support a large city, and why would anyone want to build a home below sea level, anyway. Doesn't make economic sense to me.

15 It takes a pretty incompetent president to cause a) a lot of his (former) followers to become known as 'Reagan Democrats' and b) nearly lose the bid for renomination to Ted Kennedy in 1980. Many forget that Carter was so unpopular in his own party that Kennedy was seen as the only hope of retaining the presidency. Kennedy was headed to the likely nomination had it not been for a rambling, incoherrent interview on TV (I want to say it was '60 Minutes') like he pretty much always does now. It takes a really unbelieveable amount of ineptitude on one man's part for them to try and abandon a sitting president and head of the party. Many of today's liberals are probably too young to remember how really, really bad he was. I'll give him credit for doing his part for the Reagan Revolution by losing. To bad he didn't just go away quietly like Ford and Bush 1 did. Absolutely incredible that his library is trying to take credit for the hostage release. Everyone knows Reagan's people effectively took office right after the election. The last thing Iran wanted to deal with was a newly-elected strongly pro-military president. The only reason the hostages were kept for over a year was because the Iranian government knew Carter would never do anything. More typical liberal revisionism.

Just Who Is The REAL Terrorist Here?

Michelle Malkin posts more about the *koff* isolated incident *koff* at UNC-Chapel Hill. In her post, she quotes a local ABC affiliate thus:

The driver of an SUV that plowed into a group of pedestrians at UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday told police it was retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world, according to ABC News.

Sure, the driver's name is Mohammed (PBUH) Reza Tehracrazyman or something like that.

But only a blind person, I mean, sight challenged, er sunglass at night wearing people would miss who the real terrorist in this story is.

The SUV.

Sure, Mohammed (Muhammad? Mahomet? PBUH) may have unwittingly swerved into a few people in the name of his peaceful religion, but what is that compared to the untold thousands the SUV he was driving deliberately maimed, tortured and killed just by running and spewing its fatal exhaust into the air? Not to mention the millions of deaths forthcoming due to global warming.

Muhammed (Mohammed? Mahomet? Imhotep? PBUH) should be given a medal. I firmly believe that rather than deliberately trying to mow down infidels in the name of his peaceful religion, which is a religion of peace, he was trying murder his SUV before it could kill, and kill again.

Cherry Creek School District Student Comments on Jay Bennish

Just when you thought Conservative Thinking couldn't build on the Jay Bennish story anymore here comes another doozie from the Cherry Creek School District. It's not an official of the district and it's probably not a teacher but more than likely a student of Cherry Creek Schools.

"Sam" left a comment today on one of our Jay Bennish articles. Apparently, Mr. Bennish doesn't inspire free thinking like he and his supporters believe:

I think people are over Exaugurating something little,let the guy have his freedom of speech, hes just teaching the kids to think for themselves and giving his own oppinions. All you damn people are to stupid to realize bush is like hitler

Emphasis mine. However, the reason I think it's a student that wrote this is due to the horrific grammar and spelling skills (apparently too much time spent on "geography" and not English).

This is quite disturbing for two reasons, 1) apparently the Jay Bennish indoctrination program is working and 2) my daughter will be in the Cherry Creek School District this fall.

2 Before you do that, I would encourage you to try and find out about the school's 'Acceptable Use' policy. As a former school district technology director, I can tell you that most schools place a very strict code of conduct when using the school district's computers by both the students and the staff. Since this obviously came from one of their machines, try to see if any of the comments were in violation of the policy. The policy is usually posted on the school district website. Depending on the severity, the results can be either expulsion for a student or termination for an employee. Either way, school districts really, really dislike things like this in the news. If that doesn't work out to your satisfaction, you can usually find a pretty good watchdog group that would love to hear from you. Those groups exist to cause school districts the most amount of grief possible. One last place to try is the local paper. This is especially helpful if it is a smaller town and not a large city. Those smalltown newspapers almost always appoint themselves as an informal watchdog group through their editorial pages. There are always lots of taxpayers who will jump all over things like this because they don't like administration to begin with and think too much money is being wasted so they are always looking for a good cause.

8 JC.. the future indeed looks grim. Just from my own observations, the kids I see walking around these days have a "dumbed-down" look about them. Can't really put my finger on it... kind of a dead, just-got-outta-prison look. It's all part of the dismal mass culture we're living in. I see these guys walking to school, and I just can't imagine them mastering biology, math.. anything. In L.A. here, somewhere around 50% of students don't graduate from high school. 13 dave, he has no reason to leave. I'm sure he's sucking at the teat of the American taxpayer for his income. He's either collecting welfare or has a cushy government job. Before my job as a technology director, mentioned above, I worked in technology for the Justice Dept. I quit because they couldn't keep me busy and I was bored out of my skull. I was one of 5 developers who spent their day doing a lot of coffee-drinking and wondering if we would get something to work on. To a lot of those people, the only thing worse than being that bored is the thought of having their job cut because of all the dead weight. This certainly wasn't specific to the technology people at all. Chris, thanks for referring me to the AUP but I think I'll pass. I had to go thru about 50 committee meetings reading a hundred other district's AUP before going thru about 200 iterations of our own. I'm a technical guy who fell into management by being the person employed there the longest so you may be able to guess that this won't get a lot of attention from me. Thought it might give you useful insider information but I've never even read the one where I work now even though I've signed a piece of paper that says I did. It certainly isn't your job to do the policing but I had hoped it would you some ammunition if you wanted to raise a stink over it. This is why I have my kids in a private Christian school.

14 This type story will bring them out - but never lose sight how ineffective this teacher is in spreading his gospel. The new left judges its "successes" by our reaction - rather than whether they were actually successful. They are a pathetic lot once you get past the anger they sometimes bring out in some of us. Performance art on a classroom stage - that's all it is. So a few students seem "suduced" - forget'em and notice that the overwhelming majority just yawn and stroll away.

What incentive do government schools have to teach these principals? Home school your daughter or send her to private school. You have no higher earthly obligation than your children except to love their mother.

31 Why are so many of you afraid of exposing high school students to the other side of the story? Why are you so afaid of them knowing about Jefferson's slaves? Do you fear that truth will make them less patriotic? Is patriotism based upon brain- washing and lies? For generations, kids "learned" from texts and teachers who presented only one, incomplete side of the story of our country. How many people over the age of 25 ever saw a photo of a black soldier in the Civil War, or in the World Wars? That's one example of something kids weren't taught in schools. At least we're making progress. Bennish might have crossed a line in his attempt to get his students to think, but only in the current political environment of stifling opposing ideas (and truth) in order to prevent people from knowing too much and perhaps questioning the current admin's action would it be a crime for a teacher to exhort his students to "think for themselves." Why aren't we hearing the same fuss over conservative teachers who are using the classroom to insist on THEIR agenda? What is it about conservatives that they go for blood in a situation like this?

33 Brian fully supports the positions and statements of Mr Bennish. To him Mr Bennish's positions and statements are gospel - pure fact - undeniable - and must be desiminated to all till they accept their truth. The fact that it is all part of a political philospophy under contention is irrelevant - and questioning it is same. Problem is they can't seem to get enough people to listen and agree with them - so - they target the people's children in a controlled mandatory environment to preach their gospel without interference from those so annoying reactionary parents. Intellectual pedophilia - it fits.

A number of Americans seem to believe it is simply the study of landforms and maps. Bennish's overly passionate lesson was not outside the geography curriculum.
