Zarqawi Responsible for Closing of Iraq WMD Investigation

Why did Charles Duelfer's Iraq Survey Group end their investigations into Iraq's WMD program when they did? Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Chad at In The Bullpen sends me this Independent article:

The American who led the hunt for Iraq's missing weapons of mass destruction has revealed that the investigation was cut short after he was targeted by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the militant leader in an attack that left two people dead. The head of the Iraq Survey Group, Charles Duelfer, has reported that his investigation into the possible transfer of WMD to Syria had been wound up because of the "declining security situation".

But, in an interview with The Independent, Mr Duelfer said that Zarqawi had claimed responsibility for the car-bomb attack on his convoy on 6 November 2004. "A car-bomb tried to get me and my follow car," Mr Duelfer said. "Two of my guards were killed and one was badly wounded. My hearing's not been right since."

Chad has the political angle on this thing too. Check it out.

1 Or could it be that they realized they were never going to find WMD in Iraq because they don't exist.

2 You people truly perplex me. They didn't exist? Bush lied? How is it that virtually ALL the intelligence agencies in the world including Russia, France, Germany, and the UN all agreed as recently as 1999 that he was on the verge of creating horrendous WMD? Face it! He had them. Either he destroyed them just before we attacked, he buried them in the desert, or moved them to Syria. I don't really care. He was a despot who deserved much worse than he has received and is serving as an example to the others - "you're next!"

3 I'm a Republican, and a supporter of Bush but I now know there never were any WMD's in Iraq. As Colin Powell stated, the intelligence was misleading, and false. Remember, it was the U.S. that convinced some of these other nations that Iraq had the WMD's. Also, there have been two seperate investigations into the matter, and both councils found there never were any WMD's. The evidence suggested Iraq destroyed their WMD'S years prior. Today we know the CIA, and IETA have both determined the documents suggesting Iraq tried to purchase WMD's from Niger, were falsified. The latest inof suggest these documents were falsified in the U.S.

4 CIA's Tenet says search for Iraq WMD nowhere near finished CIA Director George Tenet says that the Iraq Survey Group is continuing to search for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and that "despite some published statements, we are nowhere near 85 percent finished." Tenet spoke about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction at Georgetown University in Washington February 5. He said that his judgment about aspects of Iraq's WMD and delivery systems programs, while still provisional, is that "when the facts on Iraq are all in, we will be neither completely right nor completely wrong." "By definition," Tenet said, "intelligence deals with the unclear, the unknown, the deliberately hidden. What the enemies of the United States hope to deny, we work to reveal." 5 There were three independent investigations into the reports and they found the intelligence was wrong and broke down at many levels. The information all the Congresman and the Senators got was the same as that of the President. The Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction was a panel created by Executive Order 13328 signed by U.S. President George W. Bush in February of 2004. The UK had there own investigation called the Butler review/report. Bush on 02-06-2004 announced an independent investigation. Bush Announces Formation of Independent Commission THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. Today, by executive order, I am creating an independent commission, chaired by Governor and former Senator Chuck Robb, Judge Laurence Silberman, to look at American intelligence capabilities, especially our intelligence about weapons of mass destruction. Last week, our former chief weapons inspector, David Kay, reported that Saddam Hussein's regime had weapons programs and activities in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and was a gathering threat to the world. Dr. Kay also stated that some pre-war intelligence assessments by America and other nations about Iraq's weapons stockpiles have not been confirmed. We are determined to figure out why. The report about the WMD is on this website of the whitehouse to be downloaded, http://www.whitehouse.gov/wmd/ The third commision investigating was Silberman-Robb Commission
