Shackleford's Secrets of L.A.

I took the family to the L.A. Zoo today. If you live in the L.A. area, and have kids, you really shouldn't miss the experience. Admission is almost as cheap as going to a movie, and a hell of a lot more fun. It's a world-class zoo, and nearly undiscovered by Angelinos. Despite extensive closures, due to updating exhibits, the zoo is really a great experience. My 6 and 4 year old were captivated the entire 4.5 hours we were there. Even my 16 month old loved it so much that he was content to stay in his stroller the entire time! In fact, we had to skirt around an entire section of animals because my kids would not wanted to leave had they known there was more to see and their parents were exhausted.

Besides, we had to make it to El Tepeyac in East L.A. before it got too crowded. People who know L.A. know El Tepeyac. Unfortunately, most people who live in L.A. live in the Valley or one of a zillion enclaves and suburbs, so they never really get to know L.A. The Shackleford clan has been eating at El Tepeyac for over 30 years now. Don't mind the decor, and the neighborhood is not nearly as bad as people seem to think. Trust me on this one. If you ever have business anywhere near downtown, make the short trip this East L.A. joint. Get the Hollenback Special, a burrito so big you'll probably want to split it. For a group of four, go for the Manuel Special. That's a single burrito designed to fill an entire family. Three words: Dee lish us.

Apologies for long-time readers, but my wife and kids thank you for you patience while they keep Rusty all to themselves for a few weeks.

2 Dude, bring me back a burrito so big that I'll have to check it to make sure there's not someone hiding in it. We have a good local Taqueria, with an authentic Mexican cook, (quite a novelty in this neck of the woods until recently, and still a pleasant surprise, believe it or not), and while their burritos are good and big, I want a HAWG like I had in New Mexico at a bus stop, and at a Best Western (again, believe it or not) in southern Colorado just north of Calumet. Those babies were HUGE and covered in red or green chili. Okay, no more writing now, I have to go find a burrito at 0500.

3 Great Mexican food! Close your eyes and pretend you're in Los Mochis or Monterey. Prices are reasonable. Me gusta mucho!

4 Why take your kids to a movie to see fake animals when they can go to the zoo and see the real ones

5 That's one thing I really miss about Texas. (I lived an hour south of Houston for three years.) The roadside stand we stopped at regularly where you can get the absolute best tamales you ever ever ate.

6 The big question is do you have tickets to THE game?
