Reason 5,239 Why Terrorism Cases Should Be Tried Militarily

The man arrested for his involvement in the "Millenium Plot" has been sentenced today for a whopping 22 years. Twenty-two years?

SEATTLE (AP) — An Algerian [Ahmed Ressam] who plotted to bomb the Los Angeles airport on the eve of the millennium was sentenced to 22 years in prison Wednesday by a judge who used the opportunity to sternly criticize the Bush administration's anti-terrorism tactics.

"We did not need to use a secret military tribunal, detain the defendant indefinitely as an enemy combatant or deny the defendant the right to counsel," U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour said. "The message to the world from today's sentencing is that our courts have not abandoned our commitment to the ideals that set our nation apart."

Wrong! A man who attempted to kill hundreds of Americans gets sentenced to twenty-two years in prison is an outrage. Not only was this case blown in terms of an inadequate sentence, a connected case in England and one in Germany will not be able to proceed without the testimony afforded. If this had been a military tribunal, there may have been a way to provide testimony to these other two cases.

When taken into context of another case which wrapped up this past month, that of Islamic cleric al-Timimi out of Virginia was sentenced to life in prison for encouraging jihadis to fight U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, this is a slap on the wrist. Ressam intended on setting off explosives, found in his trunk by an alert Border Patrol agent, at LAX which again would have killed hundreds of U.S. citizens. This plot is believed to be connected to Al Qaida, so now we've sentenced an Al Qaida henchman who has tried to kill U.S. citizens to 22 years in prison. Good job.

In other terrorism-related jurisprudence, a man believed to be connected to the brutal killing and decapitation of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was found and arrested in Pakistan.

1 Say that Klan Rooster decides to join in some kind of white racist plot to blow up a big building a la Timothy McVeigh. Unlike McVeigh, Klan Rooster's purple-hearted car is stopped on the way to San Francisco's Castro and he is caught pink-handed with explosives. Should he face a military tribunal? Contrary to TRAITOR BUSH and his demented sycophants, America is a land of DUE PROCESS, where people, even Klanroosters have rights under the Constitution to face a fair trial and not some screwed up KANGAROO COURT.

2 And that's why you continue to show you're an idiot DSM. We can differ on our views, that's fine, but personal attacks by you against other people is common place for you. Why? Do you not have the mental capacity actually argue your own cause without attacking other people regarding unrelated issues? Last time I checked too, Ressam is not a United States citizen to which our Constitution and Bill of Rights affords due process for.

3 Klanrooster has recruited for the goddamned KKK on this site and unabashedly calls for genocidal violence. Perhaps he needs a boar-ing.

4 Say that Chad, a foreigner runs around America with his super 8 making lots of stupid vides of landmarks. Then, BUSH's GOONS grab him, and insted of facing a normal trial gets sent to Gitmo to be ravaged by sickos before a KANGAROO COURT. Is that Justice for Chad?

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 10:05 PM (ScqM8)

5 Name one person who videotaped a landmark and ended up at Guantanamo Bay? Crickets . . . Crickets . . . Crickets . . . Please. You're elementary grammar and your twisted logic does not carry any weight in a debate with me. I'd be more than happy to debate facts, foreign policy, the GWOT, etc., but not with someone who cannot formulate a sentence to save his life.

6 Chadian, People arrested in America need to have due process. Even Klansman psychos like Klanooster. Look what happened to Jose Padilla. He's been illegally KIDNAPPED by the MILITARY and imprisoned without trial of 3 years and 80 days so far. BUSH'S PSYCHO GOONS ARE TRAITORS!!!!!

7 NOW I'M ANGRY!! Gimpy - I know you're out there, dammit! Klanooster - you scumbag klan racist ho! Sewermouth KKKimberley - go nuke your own kaba on your own land! Varmint Cong - You can run, but you can't hide! Chadian - Read the Constitution!

9 Heh. Why should anyone here take the word of someone who lives in Australia for what is in the U.S. Constitution? My point is proven. You are not worthy of any more time. Good day and thanks for commenting.

Posted by: Chad at July 27, 2005 10:32 PM (8WaYp)

10 Chadian - Australia? Even their constitution has rule of law for suspects. Don't run away, as you are running away from yourself!

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 10:40 PM (ScqM8)

11 Yes, your IP is from Milton, Queensland which is in Australia. I'm not running from anyone, but I've grown tired of talking to a child. If I wanted to debate a child, I'd call my nephew up and debate the merits of candy.

12 THE BUSH CRIMINAL REGIME does not believe in the law. They break the law every day with Geneva, by invading countries and torturing people. Wake up!

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 10:48 PM (ScqM8)

13 Klan Rooster didn't believe me when I told him of my back 40 and the gophers!

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 10:50 PM (ScqM8)

14 Chadian, you are afraid of the truth!

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 10:52 PM (ScqM8)

15 Actually, DSM, what we are afraid of is idiots like yourself who have no idea what they are talking about. There is nothing about the Bush administration's actions that has violated the Geneva Convention. Drop the bong and reattach to reality.

Posted by: SPQR at July 27, 2005 11:03 PM (xauGB)

16 SPQR - Guantanamo is following Geneva 100%? Fallujah's ambulance shootings were not war crimes? Gimme a break and stop smokin' BUSH's WEED!

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 11:11 PM (ScqM8)

17 DSM, you do not know what you are talking about. Not on Geneva Conventions, not on war crimes, not at all. Guantanamo Bay offers the detainees there far far more than they are even entitled to under the Geneva Conventions. But you are clueless.

Posted by: SPQR at July 27, 2005 11:14 PM (xauGB)

18 SPQR - Oh, yes, Geneva is quaint. Ambualnces and hospitals were deliberately targeted and attacked in Iraq. Australian pilots refused American orders to bomb targets, as the pilots realized their missions were illegal. Think about it, homes. BUSH IS A THIEVING TRAITOR who disregards INTERNATIONAL LAW.

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 27, 2005 11:30 PM (ScqM8)

19 Here we go again, wipe your face DSM. Your verbal diarrhea is dribbling down your chin, all over that nice sweater your Mummy knitted. The Geneva Convention does not afford protection for Mosques, Ambulances, Hospitals, Orphanages -- once they are used by the enemy to fire upon soldiers, or hide weapons, nor do insurgents have any rights under the convention unless they are distinguishable from the civilian population, ie: uniforms. Yet another moron who babbles about "Geneva/Hague convention" and evidently hasn't read it.

Posted by: dave at July 28, 2005 01:58 AM (DO6vD)

20 I told you Downing Street Moron was a nutcase. Is this piece of shit actually saying that this self confessed attempted bomber is innocent. I say 22 years was not enough time. Any muslim country would have killed him slowly if he attempted to blow up one of the their major airports. The reason he got 22 years instead of 45 was because he cooperated and told the truth concerning his plans to kill hundreds of innocent Americans. Thank God the border guard spotted him. And Downing Street defends him and says America is wrong. Time to remove this idiot from society. He has no social value.

21 Catching the asshole who killed Daniel Pearl is a wish come true. Maybe not for Downing Street Moron, but the rest of humanity should celebrate. I will/am.

Posted by: greyrooster at July 28, 2005 02:41 AM (CBNGy)

22 You are a lying racist twistnut Klanrooster - only you think murderous scum are innocent. I say change the venue and let civilians try the bastard.

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 28, 2005 02:58 AM (ScqM8)

23 I think I successfully got to the sick America hating prick. Left him totally delusional and talking in circles. Another victory over the enemies of America. Downing Street Moron. Time to see a shrink. You have lost it. With proper medication and time you can get well. That is if you ever were normal. Bye, Bye. Heh, Heh, ha, ha. Give them enough rope and, Well you know.

24 Klanpigcopulatorooster: KKK bastard from the prairie - you are the sick bastard who wants to kill everyone who isn't snow white. Now your offspring is running around with a gun in the mideast doing your killing by proxy. Your mouth is a sewer and your mind is the scrapings off the chickenhouse floor.

25 All Muslims are depraved bastards who live in the 14th Century. Presdend Bush and Prime Minister Blair should resort to atomic measures to eliminate the threat of Muslim terrorism. We must get them before they "get" us.

26 Anglo, Downing Street says that your statement is not worthy of a response.

27 Downing Street Memo: It was fun while it lasted. But your feeble little mind has overloaded. You are not longer fun. Just a babbling idiot. Time for you to return to the sanitorium and get help. perhaps your muslim friends while pick up the tab. You not longer serve any useful purpose for any belief. They call it burn out. Your mental facalities are no longer with us. I know, I know. You're confused, delusional and mixed up. What did you expect. When you take the dark side it always happens. Perhaps, Yoda will save you. Perhaps, not. The Jawa report closes on another anti America traitor. Leaving him babbling like a child who lost his mommy. A job well done. I sure the libs will send us another toy to confuse. Bomp, Bomp, Bomp another one bites the dust.

29 this man attempted to commit mass murder, he crossed over the Canadian.US border to attempt to commit mass murder and his car trunk was packed with explosives transported across the Canada/US border and he recieves a lousy 22 years in prison....thats seems a way light sentence....you can get more prison time for transporting drugs across the border....but it figures his sentence was so light....a Washington State judge{liberal} laid down the sentence....figures....at the least this terrorist should have recieved a 50 year setence....22 years???....he will be out in 11 i bet for good behavior and he will go right back to trying to do another bombing.....and most assuredly he will be preaching jihad to any of the other prisoners who will listen to his spewings of hate and murder

Posted by: THANOS35 at July 28, 2005 09:09 AM (9gFP6)

30 Life in prison--if that can be called "life." And make his relatives or country of nationality pay the bill.

Posted by: Young Bourbon Professional at July 28, 2005 09:14 AM (x+5JB)

31 Thanos, I read this am that with time served and good behavior, he could be out in 14 years. His reduced sentence was based on his initial cooperation and testimony against other terrorists. However he suddenly refused to continue to cooperate and will not testify against two others our country wants to extradite from Canada and Great Britain. Our US attorney will abandon the attempt to extradite Samir Ait Mohamed and Abu Doha because without Ressam’s testimony, he can’t peruse the cases. We just gave a terrorist a light sentence based on partial cooperation. We let this criminal dictate to the Justice department what information he would and would not provide. It’s sad that this Judge gave this criminal the benefit of a light sentence based on this “cooperation”. I don’t think we can win the war on terror against a merciless enemy in civil court. The liberals who’s freedoms these killers would snuff out will defend them against our own national interests.

34 i do believe youre right on that Brad....yep, he did co-operata at first than stopped for whatever reason...maybe he wasnt going to get everything his sweet little terrorist heart wanted...oh well, too daym bad....but its BS that he got off so light...another judge screws up again....they dont seem to think about whats best for the PEOPLE the CITIZENS of the US, they seem to think only about whats best for the poor, poor criminal....some of the judges should be pulled from the benches, too many of them have either released criminals to just have them commit another horrible crime, or these stupid ass judges give some of the worst criminals nothing but a light sentence....the victims or would be victims have lost all their rights while the criminals laugh at us all

Posted by: THANOS35 at July 28, 2005 04:30 PM (9gFP6)

35 I believe we should just have a set punishment for a set crime. If you commit murder, you get the needle, if you rob a bank, you get 30 years, you rape someone, you get 60 years. I am not to concern with the actually term are, the judges can make up the actual terms. But I am sick and tire of "Oh it's not my fault, I was born trash." I don't care. If you kill some one , your wife for cheating on you, the greyrooster because he is a racist, a drug dealer because he tried to cheat you, you all should get the same sentence. The result were all the same, a person died.
