Pfc. Lynndie England Convicted for Abu Ghraib Abuse

File this story under crimes that are blown way out of proportion by a left-leaning mainstream media.

From LATimes.com:

WASHINGTON -- Lynndie R. England, the Army private who became a grinning icon of Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse as she held a dog leash attached to a naked Iraqi detainee, was convicted today on six of seven charges at a military court martial.

She faces up to 10 years in a military prison. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for Tuesday at Ft. Hood, Texas, where her court martial trial was held.

[ ... ]

England, 22, was found guilty on one of two conspiracy charges, four counts of maltreating detainees, and one count of committing an indecent act. Conviction on all counts would have exposed her to at least 11 years imprisonment.

Military prosecutors considered her the so-called poster girl of the Abu Ghraib abuse, seen smiling and flashing her thumbs upward in numerous photos in which she posed in front of naked and bound male detainees.

England's defense attorneys contend that she was easily manipulated. Well, duh! I think it's fairly obvious that she is also not too bright.

Unfortunately though, by being stupid she became the pivot point for an international scandal. Consequently, she'll probably get hammered for something that's criminal but hardly the level of major crimes. Hell, there are female child abusers, arguably more serious criminals, that get off with probation. England will surely get significant cell time.

1 Do you think this will make the left happy? Or any other convictions of those who abused the detainees? Absolutely not. Until they recover the taped conversation where Bush himself told her to do any of that, they will not be happy. And the media won't help. They've focused on England to the exclusion of all else so people get the impression she is the only one charged. England was obviously guilty, as were others, and they'll get a fair trial just like anyone else. But the "lock her up and throw away the key" crowd talk out of the other side of their mouths rooting for the release of Mumia, Lynne Stewart and various others who have been convicted of crimes as well.

2 I have no problem with dragging the terrorists around by a leash. This woman should be given a handshake and a job at arbys. Get down on their level and fight it out in the gutter. It is the only thing they understand. They are either at your throats or at your feet. There is no middle ground. Put a leash on em, let the dogs at em, take happy snaps while you stack em.

3 no one seems to understand that, Filthy...the ME has such a culture, that by the US and coalition troops fighting "nice" that these terrorists see it as a weakness....yes, the US armed forces are winning there is no doubt, but at too slow a pace, because they follow too many p.c. rules and its bullshit...im not saying that the US forces should torture and cut off heads, but when fighting these terrorists who will do anything, anything at all to kill American forces, maybe its time to show less mercy to these terrorists in combat...yes, try and capture the ones we know are the leaders who may have needed info, but the rank and file terrorists should be flat out killed in combat, dont even bother to capture them...what for???...so they can crowd into the holding camps so they can make trouble, cause riots and attempt to escape so they can kill more Iraqi citizens and American soldiers....embarass the hell out of them, kick their asses all over Iraq, annihilate them, so no mercy to the terrorists, make an example of them that are there and maybe the rest will stop coming if they see that as soon as they get into Iraq, the US forces wipe them out like cockroaches...the more mercy we show, the more likely they will come as they will see us as weak and soft....read a book on their culture and you will see how correct that is....Alexander the Great knew how to deal with them and he had very few problems and when a problem did come up he dealt with it swiftly not as slow as the US and coalition forces seem to do...sometimes it doesnt pay to be nice

4 PC is destroying the country right before our eyes. People need to wake up before it is too late. What would the MSM say today if Bush took the fight to the terrorists the way Truman did in WWII. WE have 21 century weapons and our fighting 17 century warfare. Why do we spend billions for our development on weapons to sit idol during conflict? Not saying we should nuke, but the Sunni Triangle should have been dust over a year ago. Bush needs to wake up, the MSM is never going to like him so get over it. Do what is right for our brave men and women and kill these radical Islamic bastards. I believe in the fight, not the way it is being fought!

5 Would be nice if we would start here in our own communities. The left needs to be fought as hard as the terrorists. They are the enemy from within.

6 England was a disgrace to her uniform along with her sad sack crew, and the worse nightmare to a Senior NCO. We expect people to perform their duties and job with minimum supervision - its out of mutual respect! After that incident, the Chain tightens up on everyone - looking over ever shoulder - second and third guessing every action ... a supervisor's nightmare, and hell for everyone! I don't give a damn about those prisoners - I do give a damn about all those above who had to suffer the grief she and her band of misfits caused.

8 WOW l! Another bloated self-righteous news "expose" about events circa 03/04 without "ONE SINGLE NAMED SOURCE OR WITNESS, NOR ANY CONFORMATION OR VERIFICATION OF ANY KIND"! You expect to be taken seriously - then expect again.

9 I have to agree with Thanos and Andy. PC is killing us. Look at what the MSM and left did when Al Jazeera reported that the "Infidels" bombed a wedding party in Afghanistan. It was a lie, but you didn't hear a retraction on the MSM or from the left. Another example is just this past month. The number of dead in the SuperDome. It was 6. 4 from natural causes. 1 from drugs and 1 an apparent suicide. Yet just Saturday one of the wacko left at the anti-war rally stated that dozens died in the SuperDome. So not only is PC killing us, so it the perpetuation of lies in the media. I'm sure the Lyndie England and her co-horts probably did humiliate the prisoners and should be punished, but do not paint all the soldiers with that same brush! And MSM and lefties...stop lying about it! (wishful thinking, I know)

10 "Another bloated self-righteous news "expose" about events circa 03/04 without "ONE SINGLE NAMED SOURCE OR WITNESS, NOR ANY CONFORMATION OR VERIFICATION OF ANY KIND"! You expect to be taken seriously - then expect again." Hmmm, your description sounds more like all the crap thats on foxnews. Ignoring the truth wont make it go away. Now, off to bed little fascist!

11 It true when you respond with verifiable fact - not lame commentary. Try again.

12 SBT, You're full of it and you know it. Take your stupid commentary over to Kos, where you dopeheads can get together and come up with some more lies. You're pathetic.

13 boo-hoo... you really got me mr.joe. i can't compete with intellectuals like you. you know it all and i know nothing. in truth, you are a small fish in a smaller pond (which is getting smaller by the day). who is pathetic? your life is confined to posting comments on here, spouting off the same old crap the right always do. commie-this, dopehead-that, terrorist-this, traitor-that. where does that kind of rhetoric take us? down the same toilet from where your mentality comes from. get a life. you probably have trouble sleeping at night because people with opposing views are posting on your precious site, you seethe with anger, your mind no longer has the ability to listen to the truth or opposing ideas, you can't get the thoughts of liberals out of your head. all because you must post the knock-out punch to anyone who is different than you. and oh yeah, because you are being proven wrong on a daily basis. you are a big zero.

16 England was punished for what the enemy would consider appropriate behavior. America couldn't be serious if it punishes its soldier for embarassing the enemy.

Posted by: greyrooster at September 28, 2005 06:33 PM (6krEN)

17 I will also add that I think England is a simple minded, moralless little tramp who puts out for the troops. Why do we allow types like her to be in the military anyway? The end result. The taxpayers will now pay for her imprisonment, her attorneys and welfare for her illegitimate child for the next 18 years. Perhaps longer. Who loses? The average American who goes to work every day and pays his taxes, doesn't receive welfare or aid to dependant children, or free hospitalization, or section 8 housing, etc. etc. No one reallly loses but us.
