N.O. Police Say 249 Officers Left Posts

Contrast this with the performance of NY police and firefighters during and after the 9-11 attacks.

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans police chief says 249 officers — nearly 15 percent of the force — could face a special tribunal because they left their posts without permission during Hurricane Katrina and the storm's chaotic aftermath.

Police Superintendent Eddie Compass plans to assemble a tribunal of four of his assistant chiefs to hear each case and sort the outright deserters from those with a legitimate reason for not showing up for work.

Lt. David Benelli, president of the Police Association of New Orleans, the union for rank-and-file officers, said true deserters should be fired.

"For those who left because of cowardice, they don't need to be here," Benelli told The Times-Picayune in Tuesday's edition. "If you're a deserter and you deserted your post for no other reason than you were scared, then you left the department and I don't see any need for you to come back."

Update Related: NOPD Superintendent Eddie Compass resigns.

AP: Police Chief Eddie Compass steps off the podium after resigning his position at a Monday press conference.

No details were given and no questions were answered including who would become the next superintendent.

Compass, in his announcement, said he had always wanted to be police chief and that he had led the city through some of its toughest times, including Hurricane Katrina.

Anyone think the timing of this has anything to do with the increasing scuttlebutt concerning several hundred NOLA "phantom cops" permeating the blogospere?

1 Compass has his own problems. His department, his hiring practices, his training, his leadership etc etc. Wow, a general claiming he lost the battle because many of his troops sucked! Add to that the growing realization that he, Nagin and others easily joined in with the "MEDIA" (sic) on grossly exaggerated reports of violence, death and destruction (if it bleeds it leads). This whole Katrina/New Orleans thing has turned into a travesty/a giant sick joke. So, when does Compass offer his resignation - yeah right!

2 That is 15% that "deserted" their posts. It does not take into consideration the roughly 700 figure that has been thrown around who just plain didn't show up at all. I wonder how many of that 700 are the so-called phantom cops who existed on paper only.

3 Good point rob, but I was thinking that those who "deserted" were actually just AWOL while they did a bit of looting. Boy, diversity hiring sure does work; just think, the looters had official, legal oversight!

6 If nothing else comes out of this mess in NO it is my hope that minority voters realize that they need to elect someone who is competant to office rather than someone who wins for no other reason than he/she is black. The same goes for the police department. Your life depends on the competancy of your elected officials.

7 Ain't gonna happen jj, because the vast majority of blacks will vote for the most corrupt, incompetent pimp, black or white, with full knowledge that they will get screwed, rather than support anyone with integrity, because at least the pimp will throw a little government cheese their way and not expect them to be productive citizens.

8 Yeah, speaking of the looting: Anyone watch FoxNews when the newsguy was in the Walmart and encountered several cops looting as well as other people? He talked to one female cop and asked what she was doing. (Looters are all over the place, along with a few cops pushing baskets full of stuff) It went something like this: Newsguy: What are you doing? Female cop: I'm just doing my job. I'm looking for looters. Newsguy: (Looks around) I think I see 'em.

9 Yeah, that was great Oyster, I saved it on my comp and watch it every few days just to remind me of how corrupt liberals, cops, and blacks generally are. DAMN! I stepped on all kinds of PC toes then! And I liked it.

10 IM: You are wrong about who they elect. They will not elect a white person under any circumstances. If a baby raping, muslim, white hating, murdering black ran against a white person of the highest credentials the black would win. The blacks in New Orleans are the most racist people in the world. They are corrupt, have no morals, filthy and fully believe that the white man is the only reason they are stupid, poor and corrupt. To take the wrong turn in New Orleans is to lose your life. I challenge any of you liberal pie in the sky idiots to let me drop you off in sections of New Orleans. You will not come out without being robbed, raped or murdered.
