Martial Law Declared in New Orleans

WWLTV.com:

Disgusted and furious with the lawlessness of looters who have put fear into citizens, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin declared Martial Law in the city and directed the city's 1,500 person police force to do "whatever it takes" to regain control of the city.

Nagin said that Martial Law means that officers don't have to worry about civil rights and Miranda rights in stopping the looters.

[ ... ]

Officials tried to balance security needs with saving lives.

"We're multitasking right now," said New Orleans Police Capt. Marlon Defillo. "Rescue, recovery, stabilization of looting, we're trying to feed the hungry." New Orleans' homeland security chief, Terry Ebbert, said looters were breaking into stores all over town and stealing guns. He said there are gangs of armed men moving around the city. At one point, officers stranded on the roof of a hotel were fired at by criminals on the street.

The Times-Picayune newspaper reported that the gun section at a new Wal-Mart had been cleaned out by looters.

Authorities said an officer was shot in the head and a looter was wounded in a shootout.

Opportunistic thugs are obviously taking advantage of the lack of police protection. As I recall, the situation in Somalia back in the early 1990s was similar. In that case, efforts to provide relief were negated by gangs of armed thugs directed by warlords. All that appears to be missing in New Orleans are the warlords.

1 How long before the commies down at the ACLU gets wind of martial law in N.O. and they come down there and start up a stink to protect the "rights" of all those looters and totally ignore what is going on there

2 and im sure if there are gangs in NO there are gang leaders...same as a warlord for this situation...i hope the police come down on them like a sledgehammer and put a quick stop to these gangs

3 If the authorities had taken drastic action in the beginning, and I mean shooting looters who were stealing things other than bare necessities, this would never had happened. The PC crowd has struck again. When will they ever learn?

4 The cops themselves are looting! My favorite quote: "The cops are crookeder than we are." Oh, and the city is to be evacuated to the Houston Astrodome.

5 If civil order isn't re-established, with or without martial law, then _surviving_ gang leaders will be evolving into warlords shortly. Keep an eye on the one who declares Sharia law.

6 Cool... Looting footage available for overseas distribution or kept secret so Al-Jazzeera doesn't get proof to gloat about the wrath of Allah striking infidels into chaos?

7 Just based on cursory evidence, the American media is focusing on the human tragedy, the suffering, and the desire of other Americans to help. The coverage from BBC seemed to spend more time on the powerlessness of the American government to do anything. Almost of if they were enjoying the disaster in America.

8 I just heard that the evacuation has been suspended because someone is shooting at the helicopters. There is a lot I want to say about this, but I know I would get shouted at by the PC -cowed masses who don't want to admit what they know; that the people who are doing to are from certain groups who shall remain unnamed by me, but we all know who is doing this.

10 Just imagine all the yelling by the liberals that they are declairing marshial law and will be out arresting looters too bad but maybe the poor homelsess looetrs will find a new home the pokey

11 What a great opportunity! Under martial law, the cops can do anything they need to do to restore order. Back talk! Blam! The ACLU can stuff it. Under martial law, the ACLU meddlers---oops! "observers" could themselves be shot for interfering with police. Maybe we should do this during political conventions.

12 Shut the fuck up Scott, you goddamn snivelling liberal leftard communist scum. I hope that in the next riot in Kalifornistan you get assraped by a gang of blacks. Yes, the cops need to shoot first and ask questions later when civil order has broken down completely. Anyone who isn't doing what they're told by civil authorities in such an event is an idiot and needs shot. Goddamn liberals all need killed.

13 Greyrooster is down there somewhere on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. IÂ’ll bet he has something for any looters who come around his place. Any one hear from him?

14 I wouldn't worry too much about Rooster, his only concern is probably that they won't stand still long enough for a good headshot. Speaking of which, I took the CETME out to the range last night, and at 50 yards from standing and kneeling, I found I can still make a fair number of headshots (75%) in rapid fire mode of 1 round per second, and most center mass shots were killers. Not bad, considering that I'm using 7.62 NATO in a heavy rifle, and haven't done a lot of combat shooting in a while. I only wish I was on a rooftop in New Orleans with it right now, I'd teach the bastards to act like human beings.

15 It should be a good story when he gets back on line. I'll bet the boat is history.

17 Anyone see the running news ticker on FOX News about a Muslim extremist group that praised the hurricane's destruction, and are thrilled the price of fuel will skyrocket...pun intended. How much is gas in everyone's neck of the woods? 3.39 here but I heard some areas are charging 6 bucks! Can't Bush freeze the prices? All he's done is tell everyone if you don't need it, dont get gas!!!!

Posted by: Laura at September 01, 2005 08:49 PM (L3PPO)

18 I guess itÂ’s sort of like a holiday for Islam. The 1 year anniversary of the Beslan massacre, (300 plus dead), A hurricane destroys a US city. The British traitor who helped kill 60 or so of his fellow citizens comes out to take credit for the mass murders. About the 1st and 3rd items above: The condemnation from the Muslim community is ........Deafening. Laura, gas is relatively cheep here in Seattle, about $3.20/gal..but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Posted by: Brad at September 01, 2005 11:04 PM (6mUkl)

19 $3.11, give or take about 5 cents here in NJ in the Northeast and NorthWest areas...it goes up much more and im looking for a closer job...cant afford $120 a week of gas...got a mortgage and bills to pay...more important than driving all that distance just to see a big hunk of my weekly paycheck go to the gas companys

Posted by: THANOS35 at September 02, 2005 12:07 AM (hcN1S)

20 O'Reilly made a good point...can't they take a 20% cut all around for a while? The gas stations and everyone that sells gas, fuel oil, etc. I mean, they can still make their profit, but not as much. This is ludicrous!! Bush is telling everyone if you don't need to buy gas, curtail it. WTF? With the last big holiday weekend of the summer, is he for real??

Posted by: Laura at September 02, 2005 02:59 AM (L3PPO)

21 Hehe... $3.00 is still half of what it has always cost here. $5-$6 for gallon for 95octane, diesel oil around $4/gal. 80% taxes those prices, gov. wants to make money from buying foreign fuel... If you fill some forms at KELA to prove you absolutely must have the car for work, fuel becomes technically free (omakustannehinta: $0.50/gal) no matter how much you drive.

Posted by: A Finn at September 02, 2005 04:42 AM (cWMi4)

22 One word: Biodiesel. It's made from vegetable oil and will burn in any diesel engine. With this miracle fuel, we can: Reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Boost American agriculture. Keep billions of dollars at home, which will take money away from terrorists. Make us more secure. Reduce emissions, because it burns cleaner than petrodiesel.

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus at September 02, 2005 03:08 PM (0yYS2)

23 IM: yeah not I can agree with you on that. Several stations here sell only bio-diesel now.

Posted by: Howie at September 02, 2005 03:12 PM (D3+20)

24 I'm looking for a diesel Dodge truck at a reasonable price. I'm going to start making my own from restaurant grease. If you buy the methanol and lye in bulk, and get the grease for free, then you can make it for about $.60 a gallon.

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus at September 02, 2005 03:16 PM (0yYS2)

25 Wow that is cool. 60 cents. wow htat is cool add to that an old diesel escort and you cot lots of mpg too. Crap the useful thingies are covering the comment box agin.

27 60% of the New Orleans police department deserted their posts during the greatest humanitarian effort in the history of the United States of America? 60%?
