Islamic Group Claims Texas Refinery Fire Result of Terrorism

An internet statement made at an Islamist bulletin board claimed that a recent fire at a Texas oil refinery was the work of terrorists. The same group had earlier announced that it had carried out a suicide bombing in a Qatar movie theater last Saturday. That blast killed one Briton and wounded at least 12 others.

Let me just make the disclaimer that I am extremely skeptical. However, as Robert Spencer has been reminding readers of late, this is exactly the type of thing we ought to be on the lookout for. Via M.H. King this AFP report:

A shadowy Islamist group which claimed it carried out last weekÂ’s suicide bombing in Qatar said in an internet statement it was responsible for an oil refinery explosion in Texas that left 15 people dead.

“It was a new kind of operation as we promised before,” said the ”Jund al-Sham Organisation” (Organisation of Soldiers of the Levant) in the statement posted on an Islamist website and dated March 24.

“Jund Al-Sham is able to attack with an iron fist all the enemies of Allah wherever they are,” added the statement, whose authenticity could not be verified.

“This operation was a big surprise, which we spoke of in other statements, and we will continue our suicide operations inside and outside America, and we will attack the economy of America as America did the economies of the Muslims,” it added.

The group also threatened to carry out attacks in Britain and Italy, and said these would continue “until the last soldier of the Crusaders or Jews is no longer in an Islamic country.”

SITE adds:
The communiqué, which has not been corroborated by any other source, also states that the attack was a follow up to a promise made by Abi Hamza “the American” who had declared that “He will turn your streets red, covered with blood.” It seems that the communiqué refers to Abu (abi) Azzam the American, a purported al-Qaeda member who in a videotape broadcasted on October 26, 2004 had threaten to carry out attacks in the United States.

The communiqué also promises that “This announcement will be followed by a detailed and illustrated announcement of this blessed operation in Texas’ main refinery.”

James Joyner is skeptical too.

1 The thought crossed my mind that this may have been terrorist related. Did you hear that a roof collapsed at Texas Instruments plant in Richardson, Texas? That couldn't be terrorist related could it? What worries me are the places people go where security is not enforced. I envision some suicide bomber at that Malls of America, where thousands of people shop, blowing up the whole place. I hope I don't give some jerk that reads this any ideas. Maybe they are already thinking about it. I'm sure plans are being made as I type this post as to how the next terrorist attack will be carried out. I have to laugh at the security at the airports. Does anyone truly believe they will hit the airlines again? I think not.

2 I hadn't heard about the TI plant, but I doubt either were terrorist related. However, we must remain ever on guard.

3 "However, we must remain ever on guard." I hear you, but I hope no one goes overboard due to paranoia. The sad reality of the Texas City fire is that they occur often. Refinery towns, like Texas City and Galveston, have known for years that they live next to an unforgiving monster. It only takes one small error in judgment and everyone at the plant is going to have a bad day. There number of chemical plants in the US makes it impossible to properly monitor every one. The staffing at some plants, like the urea-formaldehyde plant I worked in 20 years ago, are usually staffed with a small skeleton crew at night. There *may be* a few rent-a-cops who are so reliable that their job *requires* them activate locks throughout the plant to verify they weren't sleeping on the job. Most plants have no protection other than 911. I'm fairly lucky in my workplace. I can hear our security force occasionally performing live-fire drills with their automatic weapons not far from where my office is located.

4 That would not surprise me, as many weird things have been happening, would not surprise me if the cause was by terrorists; they is certainly enough of them here. Cindy

5 I doubt any religious zealots had anything to do with the tragedy in Texas.

6 Hi Bodybagger, If you're talking about that TI plant in Richardson next to 635 and 75, rumor has it there is a vulnerable set of pipes that lead across the street from chemical tanks to the building. Drive by and you'll see. Local rumor also has it that whatever nicks those pipes will wish it didn't. Again, zealots are not crawling out of the woodwork like the Incredibles film. Auto traffic and unhealthy eating habits are the major threats in America today.

7 >>>"I doubt any religious zealots had anything to do with the tragedy in Texas." At least we can all agree that it's their religion, and not "poverty," that has driven them to terrorism.

8 Hmmm, some of you have been reading faaaar too much Tom Clancy . . But, s'pose our "guardians" aren't reading enough?

9 Carlos, I didn't mention what religion the zealots would come from.

10 >>>"Carlos, I didn't mention what religion the zealots would come from." You don't have to, it's self evident.

11 Carlos, remember a guy named Tim?

Posted by: Collin Baber at March 26, 2005 11:07 PM (fufbw)

12 Collin, I barely remember ONE guy named Tim, it was so long ago. And his motives were political, not religious.

13 If you translate the name of this "group" into English, I do believe it works out to "The Hole in the Head Gang". Didn't this group also kidnap a GI Joe doll and torture it for information and a confession?

14 Colon Babler: Will be punished for crimes against America.

15 Carlos, do you believe Tim acted alone? There are all kinds of zealots in society.

Posted by: Collin Baber at March 28, 2005 07:16 PM (Hkppj)

16 Collin, he may have acted with help, like Nichols. But I'm not sure what that proves. They were not driven to it by their religion. They believed they were restoring America to the true Constitution or something like that. McVeigh never described killing out of religious motives. Nor was there any evidence that, at the time of the bombing, he even considered himself a Christian. On the contrary, neither at his sentencing nor his execution did Jesus make an appearance. His last public act before he was executed was to distribute copies of the 1875 poem "Invictus." From Invictus: "I thank whatever gods may be/ for my unconquerable soul," and ends "I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul" -- to a Christian (such as myself) these sentiments are at least vaguely blasphemous. So if he wasn't a christian zealot, then what religion did he represent? Answer: he was a revolutionary, plain and simple. And you Lefties love revolutionaries don't you?

18 ISLAMIC REFORM GROUP I.R.G. Motto: Islam Must Exist E-mail: Attention Sir, The above group is the true followers’ of Islam working in accordance with the teachings of our great Prophet Mohammed. In recent times you would have found out that both the western and American Christian has described terrorism as a total war on our religious belief – Islam. Rather clamouring for a co-peaceful existence between the Christian and the Muslims they have declared total war on our religion by saying that our religion is meant for extremist. More so, all evil acts around the world now have been attributed to our Muslim followers. Whether this evil was done by Christian, Hindu or any other religious fate they will always blame Islamic brothers who are innocent of this without even having a knowledge of this evil act. Sir, this tittle organization is contracting you and other eminent devoted Islam worshippers to wake up because the European and American Christians and not only fighting terrorism as you all hear over in the news or media houses but the truth is that they want to eliminate our religion Islam if we do not stand to fight back now a time will come that our growing religion especially our youths will decline and change to become their followers. As of now, you will see reason with me that with the propaganda of terrorism, they have already polluted our religion and our youths are changing over to be Christians. In no time we will be reduced to nothing unless adequate enlightenment or fight back is embarked on. They are simply imposing their religion on us in view of this, we need your assistance financially or otherwise to keep on fighting them until they let us practise our faith – Islam. Thousand of ours lost faith in our worship because of the way they tannish our image. Could all evil be traced to the Muslims alone? Does it mean that even the Christian do not commit suicide too? Bush and Blair are all terrorist and we must fight back to keep our religion on. We must not give room for eradication of our religion. Arabs race and other Muslim world must not be wiped out too. Please use the above e-mail to contact us if you are interested in our organization or not. Thanks for your anticipated cooperation. JAMIL AL-RASHEED Secretary Islam Reform Group
