11 Actually, I think this ceasefire will succeed to some extent. Mainly because: 1) Other "ceasefires" that failed tended to be unilateral. This one has both sides on board, and very publicly so. While there are other factions to consider, Hamas seems to accept the legitimacy of Abbas' rule. Coupled with the fact that he was overwhelmingly voted in when Palestinians knew he was looking for peace with Israel spells more than a fleeting chance. 2) The fact that Hamas is adopting a wait-and-see approach as opposed to coming full-out and saying they won't abide by the terms of the ceasefire shows that there's some room for them to be a part of the peace deal. Despite the fact their tone regarding this is negative, some of the group's main commanders have been speaking more conciliatory in recent months. This also tells me that the group is willing to examine alternatives to violence. 3) It wouldn't be in Hamas' or Hezbollah's best interests to commit terrorist acts at this point. As mentioned before, the fact that Abbas was elected with a large majority by people who knew he was looking for peace, shows that those same people were looking for peace. Hamas, Hezbollah, or any other terrorist group would face a negative public backlash by Palestinians (the people they're allegedly fighting for) if they stood in the way of this. Anyhow, I'm sure if peace comes it'll take more time than a photo-op. But, I find this latest round of negotiating pretty encouraging.

It's a real heartwrenching situation. I could never pull the plug on a loved one, unless I knew they were in severe pain and wanted to die. But, she can't even speak for herself or make decisions, she doesn't even know what's happening to her. No one has the right to do that to her, as long as she's not suffering, IMHO.

5 I really would like to explain this woman's situation because most people know nothing about euthanasia, brain dead (vegetative state), brain stem death, and all that goes along with being in any of those particular states. First off, there are several doctors that have stated Terri is not in a vegetative state. Further, there is a significant difference to being on life support and having a feeding tube. Also, Terri is responsive to people, which calls into question the 'vegetative' assessment. (Yes she has been in a vegetative state for 14 years, but in 1991, after receiving limited therapy, her condition improved. Her husband was advised to continue advanced therapy. He refused and has continued to refuse any type of therapy. Had he agreed to what doctors recommended, perhaps she would not be in the state she is in today.) Oh and the cost... Terri's parents requested a settlement with her husband (who has refused to divorce Terri, but has recently had two children another woman). The settlement would have given custody of Terri to her parents. The would agree to be responsible for all medical costs, as well as allow Michael to keep all malpractice settlements, and allow him to all rights on Terri's estate if/when she dies. Plus the would agree to never take any future legal action against him. He refused this offer. I find it interesting that if we starved a murderer or rapist in jail, it would be considered torture. If I starved my dog or cat, I would legally be prosecuted. But we can decide to starve an innocent woman merely because she doesn't have the voice to speak up. The thought of where this could lead is scary! Donny

12 Everyone says how sad it is, how heartless Michael is. But, honestly, let me ask you this...How many of them have honestly been put through it--put ont he other side of the fence? If I were on the outside, and never had an inside look, I might say that it would be wrong, she is still breathing, sahe still has a chance. But I have been on the other side of the fence, so I can see where he is coming from. There is nothing else worse than having to say goodbye to a loved one, or having to make that choice for them--but is it really fair to let them live with no quality of life? To have someone else take care of everything from brushing your teeth, styling your hair, changing your diaper, showering you--what kind of life is that? Not much if you ask me. I completely stand behind Michael's decision 120%. And when you are put in the position where you have to choose, and after making that choice, I believe then you can either critisize or commend Michael on his decisions.

13 In all fairness, Terri Schiavo's parents have alleged her injuries were at the hands of her husband all along. On the night she was admitted, several tests were run that showed she had been the victim of a possible strangulation, as well as evidence of recently broken bones that had healed. Plus, Terri Schiavo quit breathing, long enough for brain damage to occur, at the hands of a husband who knew CPR and had at one time been an EMT. Why didn't he perform CPR to save her? However, these medical records were sealed at the order of her husband, and have never made it to a court room. Prosecutors say they are now irrelevant, since the status of limitations on any crime committed then has passed. IMO, her husband is scared to death she will come out of this state and let the world know what an arrogant, violent man he is.

The people that could not communicate and had severe cases of AlzheimerÂ’s were the ones that were forgotten the most even though they were the ones that need the most attention. They may not have been aware of what was going on but if you took three minutes and gave it to them it made a world of difference. If Michael Shiavo wants to be rid of her even if it means starving her to death he might as well shoot her with a gun. People think that that would be inhuman. Well you know starvation was used by Hitler. Then it was also considered inhuman. At least if she was shot it would be quick and she would not have to be in pain for one or two weeks. But who REALLY cares if she is in pain, as long as Michael Shiavo can move on with his life.

21 quality of life lets see, what is quality of life for one, is not the same as it is for another. I worked with mentally and physically handicap people most of my life. MY GRANDFATHER taught me when i was a child what quality of life was. To him it was that winston cig you held for him, thats all he needed and all he desired was to smoke. He'd been a go getter his whole life, but with a disabling illness, that one cig was his quality of life. And beleive me he couldn't have been happier. Our quality of life is decided by the GOOD LORD ABOVE what he desires us to have. Not a husband, a parent, you or me. Just look at the lives she has touched, I beleive for what ever happens good or bad, its in GODS HANDS and he'll be there in the end either way. 22 I just happened to scan thru the posts and would like to share my views. First of all, to the person who said she knows more about PVS and brain death than most....perhaps you should do some reading. Persistent Vegetative State and Brain Death are not the same thing, even if people use the terms interchangeably. Brain Death is just that....the brain is dead. There are no brain waves, no brain function. In most states, this is considered legal death. After the tests that determine brain death are done, the patient is pronounced dead and life supports are removed. The patient's cardiac and respiratory functions cease shortly thereafter. This is in 'classic' brain death. However, this isn't in all cases. Some patients still exhibit minimal brain functioning, enough to sustain a heartbeat and breathing from several hours, to several days, to several years. This isn't true brain death. This can be lumped into 'persistent vegetative states'. Some people, esp those young and healthy when stricken, can keep breathing and circulating blood for years. Having to tube feed a semi-responsive adult and change their diapers is different from doing the same for a baby. Babies are growing and interacting with their caregivers. Hopefully they will grow up healthy and happy. People in PSVs can range from some level of interaction with their caregivers to minimal or none. They will not get better but rather continue to linger. They were usually healthy otherwise, which is why they didn't die during the acute phase of their illness or collapse. They will continue to exist for years. They live in nursing homes, where they will need to be turned every two hours or get bedsores. Their arms and legs need to be exercised frequently or they will become contracted, like Ms Schiavo's. They are being taken care of by people who are very overworked and who don't make very much money, yet you expect them to take excellent care of these people. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but trust me........if it comes down to a health care worker hurting themselves because there is inadequate help to get a semicomatose patient out of bed, or leaving them in bed, and therefore, more at risk of pneumonia and bedsores.....they're going to look out for themselves. I hope Terri's case serves as an example to people: Make a living will. Or you too can expect a long life filled with tube feedings, infections, limb contractures, diarrhea and bedsores. People are born, and people die and sadly, sometimes there are some people caught in between. Certainly not dead, and yet not quite alive. Unless you are personally willing to give up the rest of your life to make sure you can change Depends and turn someone every two hours and exercise their limbs and wash them and keep them clean. Don't stand in judgement of those who can't do it either. Don't hand over care of your loved one to a nursing home and expect them to care for this person, if you don't. How come I don't see swarms of concerned folk storming the hospitals and volunteering to care for the people they claim have a right to live? Make a living will!

23 All of the bleeding hearts who advocate keeping this poor woman alive should sign a will proclaiming their desire to be kept alive in a vegetative state for 20 years or longer if necessary. They should specify that they desire to have bedpans, diapers, bedsores, etc. etc. and to be cared for by their parents, spouses, children, with the financial assistance of all available charities, medicaid etc. The one thing about this which really disturbs me is that the alternative to continuing this sad existance is to starve her to death. We need the humanity of a Dr. Kevorkian to exit this world when all hope for recovery fails. At least animals who are suffering can be given a merciful injection and go quietly and painlessly.

24 I don't understand one point quite a few of you make here, so please let me grasp your idea: a person in a vegetative state is unable to hear, feel, or perceive anything, right? In other words, he/she does not exist as a person? Ok, so - why should such a non-person care about being kept alive in a vegetative state at all? If I am a vegetable, if my mind - my soul - is simply not there - why should I bother? The "I" of my personality (my persohood) no longer existing, who would bother about my body being hooked on ventilation? Not "me", definitely. So, only the people who are selfish enought not to tolerate the thought that human being can get old, can get sick, can get disbaled, that human beings need attention and care when old, sick, or disabled... Now, my thoughts on Terri's case. What gives me creeps really is the fact that despite that fact that her so-called husband has had a long term realionship plus two children (call it co-habitation, call it common law marriage, call it adultery, all in all he is not being a true and devouted husband to Terri), he is still her legal guardian. Would you like such a "husband" decide for you? What terrifies me even more is that Terri is denied any realiable medical procedures which would indicate the state she is in. Ok folks, let's assume she could be in a persistent vegetative state (she appears not to be, by the way - she responds to stimuli, which defies the definition of a PVS). Why is she denied a PET scan? The dirty thing about it is that there is no reliable data supporting the thesis that Terri is "a rotten tomatoe". If she really is one, ok folks, give me the proofs. Give me the PET scan, give me some lenghty examinations conducted by un-biased neurologists. As to money and all this "diapers changing": don't you worry, folks. There is her family, really eager to take care of Terri. It is not _your_ concern, it is even not the concern of her so-called husband. If the people want to take care of a "rotten tomatoe", as somebody called Terri (though I would say she is a severly disabled person), why shouldn't they be allowed to? 25 I have been so depressed over this case. I can not believe the society we live in. It sickens me. This poor woman is lying in bed screaming inside for someone to feed her at this very moment. 26 Michael (the so called loving husband) was already awarded 1.2 million dollars after a malpractice lawsuit to cover her medical bills. Robert Herring even offered him 1 million if he would reverse his decision to have her feeding tube removed and let her parents be her guardian. Michael has refused antibotics for his wife when she was sick, a mri, and also swallow tests to see if she can eat on her own. The last swallow tests were done in 1992. Doctors do not believe she is PVS but her so called husband wont allow the testing and the proper treatment for her. Doctors believe she could improve greatly if she would get the treatment. I dont think he is interested so much in the money but to cover up what really happened to her and I believe he is responisible for what happened to her. Doctors have said that it is very unlikely this happened from low potassium especially to someone in their 20s. In the 1991 bone scan (which he did seal and her parents didnt know about until 199 revealed abnormal stress to her bones such as her back, ribs, sacrolliac joints, knees and ankles. It also states that she had close head injury. The doctors that examined her whenever she first got to the hospital said she had injuries similiar to strangulation. Michael said he heard a thud around 4:30 a.m. and saw her lying on the floor so he rolled her over onto her back. She did not breathe for 5 to 8 minutes even though he knew cpr. Her brother who lived in the same apartment complex was called and whenever he cane and saw her she was on her stomach face down. I have read numerous different web sites about the treatment that her husband has given her and the treatments he has refused and I just can not believe that he is still her guardian. Ive also seen videos of her and she is not a tomato. She moves her head, she makes noises, and smiles. I've seen elderly people in far more worse conditions than she is in. I just hope that the courts have enough brains and common sense to see that the only thing her loving husband is concerned about is killing her and I hope to God her parents get to be her guardians and let her get the proper medical treatment she deserves.

27 The furor that's been stirred up over this case sickens and saddens me. The only question that really, truly needs to be asked is simply "What would Terri have wanted?" That question has been asked, and answered. In 2000, a court decided that Terri's comments conclusively showed that she did not wish to be kept alive in a coma, or vegetative, or dependent state. But if the husband was strictly on a money hunt, attempting to shirk his responsibilities or hoping to cover up evidence of some past foul play, wouldn't he have dropped this quest years and years ago, before it it metastastized into the hottest topic in the nation? No other explanation of his actions makes quite as much sense to me as that he truly believes this is what she would have wanted. So everyone should just get out of his way. There are sworn testimony records from doctors and nurses who examined Terri initially after her "injury" that determined that the potassium levels in her body were in fact, not high enough to indicate heart attack or stroke. There were also indications of a neck injury and/or possibility of strangulation. So, I guess it really boils down to who you believe. A man who stands to gain from her death, or not? There are too many stories. Too many things to be considered. All I'm saying is that Michael should be investigated. The judge ignored several legal items when deciding on this case, and has all along. It has been said that Terri was for several years able to be fed orally, until her husband (who cared about her so much?) asked that the oral feeding be stopped and a feeding tube be inserted because it was too costly to have a nurse physically feed her every 3-4 hours. Concerned about her well being? Or concerned about the money that wouldn't be available to him when she died because it was spent on her care? He stopped therapy and treatments that some doctor's say could have helped rehabilitate Terri. I wouldn't want to be alive either, and I'm sure she doesn't. But I sure as hell wouldn't want a man I was ready to divorce, who I had complained to friends and family had abused me, making decisions regarding my life, or lack of it. I don't think the woman should be kept alive under those conditions, but I sure don't think he should be the one making those decisions. The ACLU cracks me up. Here are affidavits of three former nurses / caretakers of Terri Schiavo, relating their horror at the abusive treatment and lack of treatment regarding Terri's care. NO RESUSCITATION (if needed); NO ANTIBIOTICS FOR URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS! NO REHABILITATION OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING RANGE OF MOTION AND STIMULATION! NEVER ALLOWED TO LEAVE HER ROOM FOR FRESH AIR AND SUNSHINE! APPARENT INSULIN REACTIONS AFTER MICHAEL'S VISITS (she is not diabetic)! His 'fiance' with whom he's lived for seven years is expecting their second child. He was heard on a news broadcast saying Terri has received rehabilitation therapy for 13 years. He's received death threats and has temporarily moved from his present address. I wonder if Michael Schiavo will be able to sleep again? Or leave his home without a body guard? My name is Carla Sauer Iyer. I am over the age of eighteen and make this statement of my own personal knowledge. 2. I am a registered nurse in the State of Florida, having been licensed continuously in Florida from 1997 to the present. Prior to that I was a Licensed Practical Nurse for about four years. 3. I was employed at Palm Garden of Largo Convalescent Center in Largo, Florida from April 1995 to July 1996, while Terri Schiavo was a patient there. 4. It was clear to me at Palm Gardens that all decisions regarding Terri Schiavo were made by Michael Schiavo, with no allowance made for any discussion, debate or normal professional judgment. My initial training there consisted solely of the instruction "Do what Michael Schiavo tells you or you will be terminated." This struck me as extremely odd. 5. I was very disturbed by the decision making protocol, as no allowance whatsoever was made for professional responsibility. The atmosphere throughout the facility was dominated by Mr. Schiavo's intimidation. Everyone there, with the exception of several people who seemed to be close to Michael, was intimidated by him. Michael Schiavo always had an overbearing attitude, yelling numerous times such things as "This is my order and you're going to follow it." He is very large and uses menacing body language, such as standing too close to you, getting right in your face and practically shouting. 6. To the best of my recollection, rehabilitation had been ordered for Terri, but I never saw any being done or had any reason at all to believe that there was ever any rehab of Terri done at Palm Gardens while I was there. I became concerned because Michael wanted nothing done for Terri at all, no antibiotics, no tests, no range of motion therapy, no stimulation, no nothing. Michael said again and again that Terri should NOT get any rehab, that there should be no range of motion whatsoever, or anything else. I and a CNA named Roxy would give Terri range of motion anyway. One time I put a wash cloth in Terri's hand to keep her fingers from curling together, and Michael saw it and made me take it out, saying that was therapy. 7. Terri's medical condition was systematically distorted and misrepresented by Michael. When I worked with her, she was alert and oriented. Terri spoke on a regular basis while in my presence, saying such things as "mommy," and "help me." "Help me" was, in fact, one of her most frequent utterances. I heard her say it hundreds of times. Terri would try to say the word "pain" when she was in discomfort, but it came out more like "pay." She didn't say the "n" sound very well. During her menses she would indicate her discomfort by saying "pay" and moving her arms toward her lower abdominal area. Other ways that she would indicate that she was in pain included pursing her lips, grimacing, thrashing in bed, curling her toes or moving her legs around. She would let you know when she had a bowel movement by flipping up the covers and pulling on her diaper and scooted in bed on her bottom. 8. When I came into her room and said "Hi, Terri", she would always recognize my voice and her name, and would turn her head all the way toward me, saying "Haaaiiiii" sort of, as she did. I recognized this as a "hi", which is very close to what it sounded like, the whole sound being only a second or two long. When I told her humrous stories about my life or something I read in the paper, Terri would chuckle, sometimes more a giggle or laugh. She would move her whole body, upper and lower. Her legs would sometimes be off the bed, and need to be repositioned. I made numerous entries into the nursing notes in her chart, stating verbatim what she said and her various behaviors, but by my next on-duty shift, the notes would be deleted from her chart. Every time I made a positive entry about any responsiveness of Terri's, someone would remove it after my shift ended. Michael always demanded to see her chart as soon as he arrived, and would take it in her room with him. I documented Terri's rehab potential well, writing whole pages about Terri's responsiveness, but they would always be deleted by the next time I saw her chart. The reason I wrote so much was that everybody else seemed to be afraid to make positive entries for fear of their jobs, but I felt very strongly that a nurses job was to accurately record everything we see and hear that bears on a patients condition and their family. I upheld the Nurses Practice Act, and if it cost me my job, I was willing to accept that. 9. Throughout my time at Palm Gardens, Michael Schiavo was focused on Terri's death. Michael would say "When is she going to die?," "Has she died yet?" and "When is that bitch gonna die?" These statements were common knowledge at Palm Gardens, as he would make them casually in passing, without regard even for who he was talking to, as long as it was a staff member. Other statements which I recall him making include "Can't anything be done to accelerate her death - won't she ever die?" When she wouldn't die, Michael would be furious. Michael was also adamant that the family should not be given information. He made numerous statements such as "Make sure the parents aren't contacted." I recorded Michael's statements word for word in Terri's chart, but these entries were also deleted after the end of my shift. Standing orders were that the family wasn't to be contacted, in fact, there was a large sign in the front of her chart that said under no circumstances was her family to be called, call Michael immediately, but I would call them, anyway, because I thought they should know about their daughter. 10. Any time Terri would be sick, like with a UTI [urinary tract infection]or fluid buildup in her lungs, colds, or pneumonia, Michael would be visibly excited, thrilled even, hoping that she would die. He would say something like, "Hallelujah! You've made my day!" He would call me, as I was the nurse supervisor on the floor, and ask for every little detail about her temperature, blood pressure, etc., and would call back frequently asking if she was dead yet. He would blurt out "I'm going to be rich!" and would talk about all the things he would buy when Terri died, which included a new car, a new boat, and going to Europe, among other things. 11. When Michael visited Terri, he always came alone and always had the door closed and locked while he was with Terri. He would typically be there about twenty minutes or so. When he left Terri would be trembling, crying hysterically, and would be very pale and have cold sweats. It looked to me like Terri was having a hypoglycemic reaction, so I'd check her blood sugar. The glucometer reading would be so low it was below the range where it would register an actual number reading. I would put dextrose in Terri's mouth to counteract it. This happened about five times on my shift, as I recall. Normally Terri's blood sugar levels were very stable due to the uniformity of her diet through tube feeding. It is medically possible that Michael injected Terri with Regular insulin, which is very fast acting, but I don't have any way of knowing for sure. 12. The longer I was employed at Palm Gardens the more concerned I became about patient care, both relating to Terri Schiavo, for the reasons I've said, and other patients, too. There was an LPN named Carolyn Adams, known as "Andy" Adams who was a particular concern. An unusual number of patients seemed to die on her shift, but she was completely unconcerned, making statements such as "They are old - let them die." I couldn't believe her attitude or the fact that it didn't seem to attract any attention. She made many comments about Terri being a waste of money, that she should die. She said it was costing Michael a lot of money to keep her alive, and that he complained about it constantly (I heard him complain about it all the time, too.) Both Michael and Adams said that she would be worth more to him if she were dead. I ultimately called the police relative to this situation, and was terminated the next day. Other reasons were cited, but I was convinced it was because of my "rocking the boat." 13. Ms. Adams was one of the people who did not seem to be intimidated by Michael. In fact, they seemed to be very close, and Adams would do whatever Michael told her. Michael sometimes called Adams at night and spoke at length. I was not able to hear the content of these phone calls, but I knew it was him talking to her because she would tell me afterward and relay orders from him. 14. I have contacted the Schindler family because I just couldn't stand by and let Terri die without the truth being known. FURTHER AFFIANT SAYETH NAUGHT. CARLA SAUER IYER, R.N. I actually was employed by a nursing agency and was placed at Sabal Palms as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). I believe the events related here occurred in about 1993. 3. During this assignment I took care of Terri Schiavo several times. The first time I saw her my duties were being explained to me by the nurse on duty. Terri Schiavo was lying in bed. Another patient, also a young woman about the same age and in the same condition, was sitting up in a chair, with a drink cup and straw in front of her. 4. I asked why Terri was not up in a chair, too. I learned, as part of my training, that there was a family dispute and that the husband, as guardian, wanted no rehabilitation for Terri. This surprised me, as I did not think a guardian could go against a doctor's orders like that, but I was assured that a guardian could and that this guardian had gone against Terri's doctor's orders. 5. No one was allowed to just go in and see Terri. Michael had a visitors list. We all knew that we would lose our jobs if we did not do exactly what Michael said to do. 6. I remember seeing Michael Schiavo only once the entire time I worked at Sabal Palms, but we were all aware that Terri was not to be given any kind of rehabilitative help, per his instructions. Once, I wanted to put a cloth in Terri's hand to keep her hand from closing in on itself, but I was not permitted to do this, as Michael Schiavo considered that to be a form of rehabilitation. 7. This entire experience made me look hard at nursing homes. After about two years, I quit this job, because I was so disillusioned with the way Terri was treated. I could tell a definite difference between the way Terri responded to Olga and the way she reacted to me, until she got used to my taking care of her. Among the things that Terri was deprived of by Michael's orders were any kind of testing, dental care or stimulation. I was ordered by my supervisors to limit my time with Terri. It was clear to me at Palm Gardens that all decisions regarding Terri Schiavo were made by Michael Schiavo, with no allowance made for any discussion, debate or normal professional judgment. My initial training there consisted solely of the instruction "Do what Michael Schiavo tells you or you will be terminated." This struck me as extremely odd. 5. I was very disturbed by the decision making protocol, as no allowance whatsoever was made for professional responsibility. The atmosphere throughout the facility was dominated by Mr. Schiavo's intimidation. Everyone there, with the exception of several people who seemed to be close to Michael, was intimidated by him. Michael Schiavo always had an overbearing attitude, yelling numerous times such things as "This is my order and you're going to follow it." He is very large and uses menacing body language, such as standing too close to you, getting right in your face and practically shouting. 6. To the best of my recollection, rehabilitation had been ordered for Terri, but I never saw any being done or had any reason at all to believe that there was ever any rehab of Terri done at Palm Gardens while I was there. I became concerned because Michael wanted nothing done for Terri at all, no antibiotics, no tests, no range of motion therapy, no stimulation, no nothing. Michael said again and again that Terri should NOT get any rehab, that there should be no range of motion whatsoever, or anything else. I and a CNA named Roxy would give Terri range of motion anyway. One time I put a wash cloth in Terri's hand to keep her fingers from curling together, and Michael saw it and made me take it out, saying that was therapy. 7. Terri's medical condition was systematically distorted and misrepresented by Michael. When I worked with her, she was alert and oriented. Terri spoke on a regular basis while in my presence, saying such things as "mommy," and "help me." "Help me" was, in fact, one of her most frequent utterances. I heard her say it hundreds of times. Terri would try to say the word "pain" when she was in discomfort, but it came out more like "pay." She didn't say the "n" sound very well. During her menses she would indicate her discomfort by saying "pay" and moving her arms toward her lower abdominal area. Other ways that she would indicate that she was in pain included pursing her lips, grimacing, thrashing in bed, curling her toes or moving her legs around. She would let you know when she had a bowel movement by flipping up the covers and pulling on her diaper and scooted in bed on her bottom. 8. When I came into her room and said "Hi, Terri", she would always recognize my voice and her name, and would turn her head all the way toward me, saying "Haaaiiiii" sort of, as she did. I recognized this as a "hi", which is very close to what it sounded like, the whole sound being only a second or two long. When I told her humrous stories about my life or something I read in the paper, Terri would chuckle, sometimes more a giggle or laugh. She would move her whole body, upper and lower. Her legs would sometimes be off the bed, and need to be repositioned. I made numerous entries into the nursing notes in her chart, stating verbatim what she said and her various behaviors, but by my next on-duty shift, the notes would be deleted from her chart. Every time I made a positive entry about any responsiveness of Terri's, someone would remove it after my shift ended. Michael always demanded to see her chart as soon as he arrived, and would take it in her room with him. I documented Terri's rehab potential well, writing whole pages about Terri's responsiveness, but they would always be deleted by the next time I saw her chart. The reason I wrote so much was that everybody else seemed to be afraid to make positive entries for fear of their jobs, but I felt very strongly that a nurses job was to accurately record everything we see and hear that bears on a patients condition and their family. I upheld the Nurses Practice Act, and if it cost me my job, I was willing to accept that. 9. Throughout my time at Palm Gardens, Michael Schiavo was focused on Terri's death. Michael would say "When is she going to die?," "Has she died yet?" and "When is that bitch gonna die?" These statements were common knowledge at Palm Gardens, as he would make them casually in passing, without regard even for who he was talking to, as long as it was a staff member. Other statements which I recall him making include "Can't anything be done to accelerate her death - won't she ever die?" When she wouldn't die, Michael would be furious. Michael was also adamant that the family should not be given information. He made numerous statements such as "Make sure the parents aren't contacted." I recorded Michael's statements word for word in Terri's chart, but these entries were also deleted after the end of my shift. Standing orders were that the family wasn't to be contacted, in fact, there was a large sign in the front of her chart that said under no circumstances was her family to be called, call Michael immediately, but I would call them, anyway, because I thought they should know about their daughter. 10. Any time Terri would be sick, like with a UTI [urinary tract infection]or fluid buildup in her lungs, colds, or pneumonia, Michael would be visibly excited, thrilled even, hoping that she would die. He would say something like, "Hallelujah! You've made my day!" He would call me, as I was the nurse supervisor on the floor, and ask for every little detail about her temperature, blood pressure, etc., and would call back frequently asking if she was dead yet. He would blurt out "I'm going to be rich!" and would talk about all the things he would buy when Terri died, which included a new car, a new boat, and going to Europe, among other things. 11. When Michael visited Terri, he always came alone and always had the door closed and locked while he was with Terri. He would typically be there about twenty minutes or so. When he left Terri would be trembling, crying hysterically, and would be very pale and have cold sweats. It looked to me like Terri was having a hypoglycemic reaction, so I'd check her blood sugar. The glucometer reading would be so low it was below the range where it would register an actual number reading. I would put dextrose in Terri's mouth to counteract it. This happened about five times on my shift, as I recall. Normally Terri's blood sugar levels were very stable due to the uniformity of her diet through tube feeding. It is medically possible that Michael injected Terri with Regular insulin, which is very fast acting, but I don't have any way of knowing for sure. 12. The longer I was employed at Palm Gardens the more concerned I became about patient care, both relating to Terri Schiavo, for the reasons I've said, and other patients, too. There was an LPN named Carolyn Adams, known as "Andy" Adams who was a particular concern. An unusual number of patients seemed to die on her shift, but she was completely unconcerned, making statements such as "They are old - let them die." I couldn't believe her attitude or the fact that it didn't seem to attract any attention. She made many comments about Terri being a waste of money, that she should die. She said it was costing Michael a lot of money to keep her alive, and that he complained about it constantly (I heard him complain about it all the time, too.) Both Michael and Adams said that she would be worth more to him if she were dead. I ultimately called the police relative to this situation, and was terminated the next day. Other reasons were cited, but I was convinced it was because of my "rocking the boat." 13. Ms. Adams was one of the people who did not seem to be intimidated by Michael. In fact, they seemed to be very close, and Adams would do whatever Michael told her. Michael sometimes called Adams at night and spoke at length. I was not able to hear the content of these phone calls, but I knew it was him talking to her because she would tell me afterward and relay orders from him. 14.
