A blog first--Liveblogging my test!!

I'm about to give a test to my Public Administration class. I just reallized that the room I use has a computer and broadband. Usually I sit around and read a book during tests, today I'm going to live blog the test. Come back and experience the fear and loathing that is a midterm exam at a small regional public university in an upper level class. What strange sounds will be heard coming out of students' clenched teeth? Will the air conditioning mask the nervous sweat dripping off their forehads and soaking their clothes? Which student will be first to finish: Student A, the over-achieving poli-sci major with law school aspirations; or Student B, the football playing PE major who needed a Social Science elective and had an advisor who had not yet learned of Dr. Rusty Shackleford's reputation? All this and more to be revealed in the world's first test live blog! Test begins at 12:10 EDT. Be there or risk the ever dreadful MAKE-UP TEST BLOG POST!

12:15: Handed out tests. It turns out that the upper division poli sci class before mine also had a test today. Students pissed that they had to study for two tests on the same day. I feel for them, I just don't care. Also, the Prof. caught someone cheating. How does one cheat on an essay exam with blue books handed out by the Prof?? Don't know. I'm on heightened security alert. Code Orange!

Live blogging continues below. 12:20: Why is it that some students think they ought to shout out all their questions, even during a test? Yes, that should read a) b) c) d), not a) c) b) d)!!!

12:25:In every class there is a smart ass who thinks they have an in with the teacher. They think that being a smart ass is cute, and that I find them funny. I don't. During a test the smart ass invariably reads each question, looks at the Prof, and then gets some kind of look on their face. If the question is hard, they grimace. If there is something funny in the question, they laugh out loud and shake their heads. Man, just take the test already!!!

12:30: My money is on the overachiever finishing first. Since an essay question is involved, overachievers usually can pound those out pretty fast. Slackers tend to finish Scantron tests earlier--the choose 'c' when in doubt method of test-taking applies here. The test I gave out has 25 multiple choice questions, but the rest are short answer and essay. Note on live-blogging from class: make sure your keyboard is reasonably quiet. The one in this room is pretty loud.

12:35: Just made the proctoring rounds. One student gives me the thumbs up and whispers "good test". By good I take it to mean easy.

12:40: Four students finished. Too quick. Test must be too easy. Either that, or they failed miserably. I doubt that, though. Three of four early finishers are women. My experience is that women are better test takers, smarter, and usually harder working than their male counterparts. We'll see.

12:42 Here are the bonus question. Yeah, bonus questions are a cop-out, but hey, they're usually fun and often relevenat:

1) Who is the Attorney General?
2)Who is the Sec State?
3) Who is the Sec Defense?
4? Who is Mr. Burns' executive assistant? (Yes, that Mr. Burns)
5) Who is the Principal of South Park Elementary?

12:45: Did you get all the bonus q's right? The way I rationalize this is they are all famous Public Administrators.

12:46: One very pissed off student just left the room. Seriously. And it was my smart-ass!!

12:48: The herd is thinning. As seats begin to empty you can see theh looks on students' faces more clearly. Some are intnse, others are perfect poker-players. One of them looks kind of confused, he fiddles with his pen. Banging the pen on hand. Pen against forehead. In mouth. Clicking on teeth. Are the qeustions really that hard?

12:51: Every large class has the flirter. The girl who has used her looks to get through life. Flirters are usually super-sweet, but they can get annoying after awhile. Take the flirter in this class. Nice girl, moderately smart. But do they really believe their flirtation will help their grade? Not on my watch, baby!! She keeps looking up, trying to make eye-contact. Nope. Not falling for it. Rusty is taken.

12:55: Last two students getting up, same time. Test over already? Wow, that went fast. Do I go downstairs, back to my office? If I do that the inevitable will happen. A student will show up in the next half an hour asking if the test is graded. Relax. Rusty has other things going on in his life--like blogging! Then they will ask when the tests will be ready. Not yet, geeze.

12:57: You have just been a part of the world's first live-blogging of a midterm exam. Hope you weren't disappointed. Many years from now, as you eek off a meeger existence from the defunct Social Security system, you may tell your grandchildren, as you share your meager portion of Cat Chow, how you were there the day history was made. You were there, the day Rusty Shackleford went where no other blogger had dared to go. Oh, the triumph!!

Ok, but seriously, the test did go a lot faster than normal. I just hope this doesn't inspire other ludicrous live-blogging events. For instance, live-blogging your intimate encounters--not a good idea. This goes double if your name happens to be Andrew Sullivan.

2 Some people are just stupid, even when it makes no sense. I used to be the student in the back who would shake her head. ~C ps lot of shit going down today, Rusty. So how were the guys in Yemen killed yesterday? The same way the Saudi's killed the drug traffickers?

3 While Soldiers were giving out candy to kids in Baghdad, 3 simultaneous bombs went off killing approximately 35 kids, 7 women, 10 soldiers. What did you say about Islam does not kill women and children? 60 were injured, I forget how many were killed near Abu Ghraib. Another safehouse where Zarqawi was believed to have been with a cashe of weapons was struck today for after being hit, had a major secondary explosion. Allawi says they can't give up despite the wave of violence from early this morning. 10 new hostages, 6 Iraqi's, 2 Lebonese, 2 Indonesians taken by the Islamic Army of Iraq, who are also holding the 2 French journalists. Two of these new hostages are women. Rockets were launched at a strategic army base near Baghdad killed 2 soldiers, injuring 7. Convoy was attacked, killing 140 plus people including 10 US Soldiers. It's hard keeping up with this scroll, it goes too fast. (Fox) New septic system opening - not anymore..... Vioxx has been recalled (I used to take that stuff - my son is very sick and I have to find a specialist for him.. he has no insurance and I'm on Medicaid and Medicare and can't get the right help either but I need to take care of him; he's only 20)and should not have to suffer at his age. Israel has been told not to do their usual form of assassinations - many deaths in Gaza strip today. Kids running around. Someone threw a rocket over the wall killing 2 preschoolers in Israel and Israel has gone haywire as usual. Even killed a woman who was jogging. The 2nd person at Ground Zero has died in the rebuilding by falling 21 stories through a elevator shaft. Back to Israel, 12 homes have been destroyed by Israeli's incursion into the Gaza strip. Private FBI files of John Lennon are to be released. More crap on Terri Shiavo - sure they keep showing 10 year old pictures of her. Remove the tube, let the woman die in dignity. My family wants to get me a nice nightgown to send me down the shute (to be cremated) probably sooner than later. No one should have to live like I do. Any one know a good neurologist or orthopedic who will cut my spinal cord just above the L1 vertebra? Anyone want a llama farm or a llama business? I have two sizes, regular and 3 mini's. Major stud worth a fortune died 2 months ago from a burst aortic artery but still have his brother, a gorgeous black and white stud. Also a mini stud. 10 altogether. Good business for someone who can take care of them. I am bedbound and can't care for these wonderful animals. I'm not going to go into Scott Peterson because I "know" he killed his wife and better not get away with it. Oh, the 1o hostages worked for the electric company. Robert Blake is a psycho and his trial is finally set for Nov 1st. Like these people really matter. Another document surfaces regarding President Bush's national guard - AP. Geez, get over it please. Mt St Helens is getting closer to blowing. Nigeria is having problems regarding control over their oil. Sorry they say it was Hamas that killed the jogging woman in Gaza. Wish they'd make up their minds. Someone in Thailand has been charged with making fake documents for terrorists. UK has asked Israel to stop their form of assassinations of Palestinian people. Fierce battles between Israeli and Palestinian forces kill 72 Palestinians, 10 Israeli's. But Israel has gunships, blah, blah, blah. Al Jazeera shows new video of ten new hostables, the Indonesian electricians are women. 4 Killed near safehouse in Fallujah use by the Tawhid and Jihad group..... I'm gong to let my dog in and check other channels. Cindy

4 I have to agree with you about the women; they are smarter, study harder and do better at tests. Let me tell you why. I was 35 when I went back to college. During that time, I was taking 4 programs, 18 credits per semester, raising 2 boys, worked 2 jobs, did own work at home - ie computerized accounting, medical transcription and other miscellaneous typing from every business angle - including the hotel down the street where businessmen stayed - had to have work done and sent. Did thesises for those from UNH, other miscellaneous stuff. Was very good at it, too. Graduated in 2 years with 3.98 average but I still can't make a webpage!!! argh Cindy

5 on the bonus question, I got the first 3 - sorry have no idea who BURNS is or "Who is the Principal of South Park Elementary?" Sounds more like a show - ie South Park. Maybe you can enlighten me. I seem to be the only person who stayed with you through this - I seem to stay with you through a lot of things - sure you don't need a partner? Wizbang partners come from NH, LA and PA. Ok 42 dead today in Iraq, 140 injured during the opening of the sewage system. How come we never hear what happens to Iraqi hostages? BTW, yesterday there was long discussion on oil and oil reserves. They said there is absolutely no reason whatsoever for the price and cost of crude oil - we have plenty and there is plenty. The price is going up because of fears on Wall Street, not based on what is real. And we're all going to pay way too much - especially those of us in New England who need it to heat our homes and they say, including oil companies, that there is no need for this to be happening at all. They also discussed the economy. Things may not look good right now - ie hurricanes, tornadoes, etc., makes the numbers look worse than they really are. As much as I do not want to hear that I, I, I, I, voice or face tonight, I know I have no choice but to watch the damn debate but they cannot direct any comment, answer or whatever to each other. Over 20B in Damage in Florida alone, never mind, LA, AL, GE, SC, NC or other states hit by these storms. It's funny how they don't even bother to mention these things when they talk about the economy. Now I could have sworn on my deathbed that Bush said he would give tax breaks to those companies who keep their businesses in the United States - so how come Kerry is going around saying that himself and then blaming Bush for the outsourcing???? you know who.

6 Haha! Hilarious Rusty. I await your next live blogging of a test taking event. How about some more stories of a Prof.'s life. Some old memorable stories of "flirties", jocks and the other cast of characters from The Breakfast Club.

7 Another thing I want to mention. Bush has never said he would bring back the draft, so why are the Democrats saying that it may possibly come back? While you were poking fun at the students, I worked. :-) ~C

8 Oh, and another thing, jobless claims have risen by the reason is also the hurricanes - do you hear anyone saying that? nada ~C

Posted by: firstbrokenangel at September 30, 2004 01:12 PM (D39Vm)

9 They say that one out of every four Iraqi's are on handouts. How come they have nicer cars than we do? ~C

15 The next thing they will say is that it's our fault...US soldiers lured kids for candy, then get blown up! What a damned shame! But remember, some of these "innocent" people also celebrated in the streets, passing out candy to kids, when the twin towers were hit. The women were too. NEVER FORGET!

16 Actually they did to that, Laura. See Rusty's post: September 30, 2004 Leftists: US Murders Children in Iraq while Attacking Brave Zarqawi Freedom Fighters Cindy
