ORTHODOX Christmas in Cambodia
Did you know that the Orthodox church celebrates Christmas two weeks after we do? That's what John Kerry meant by Christmas in Cambodia.....Orthodox Christmas
Drudge flash: Kerry has turned to author Brinkley for a "modification" after it was exposed that Kerry was not in Cambodia during Christmas of 1968, as he once claimed from the Senate floor.
The Brinkley piece for the NEW YORKER will now say that Kerry was not in Cambodia during Christmas, but rather in January, publishing sources tell DRUDGE.
This gets stranger and stranger.
Capatain Ed has the lowdown on it.

Actually Christmas in the same in the Orthodox Church...it's Easter that's messed up.
Unless we're talking two different Orthodox Churches. Or living in parallel universes. Or something.
Forgive me. I'm still in shock that we spawned a blogchild together and I don't remember that special moment. (Honestly, I've never blacked out like that before.)

The original post is correct. The western, or Roman, christian churches celebrate christmas on 25 december. The eastern, or Orthodox, christian churches celebrate christmas on 7 January. Easter is the same date for all christian churches.
It may be that senator Kerry was with a group of orthodox christian Cambodians for christmas 1968 (january 1969). This is not likely as less than 1% of cambodians are western christians, and there are no orthodox churches in the country. However, it is possible.
It is not likely they would celebrate loudly during a covert operation in a hostile country.
A lucid and interesting discussion of the julian and gregorian calendars can be found at www.goarc.org/en/ourfaith/

You've been having a screaming match with who??
Certainly not me.
Now, the difference for us - regarding Christmas - is that my Orthodox church celebrates December 25.
Easter? I gave up trying to explain it to people. I always offer to work Western Eastern and ask for Orthodox off and get it.

Screaming? I meant 'lovers quarrel'. You must go to one of those liberal Unitarian Orthodox churches.......
Last time I checked, the OFFICIAL stance of Orthodoxy was that Christmas is in January. It may be that most Orthodox Christians celebrate on Dec. 25, but theologically Orthodoxy goes by the Julian Calendar.
On this point I'm pretty positive. You can check this article if you don't believe me: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/1105210.stm

I'm Orthodox and I will explain.
Pascha (Greek for Passover) is what the Orthodox call the Feast of the Ressurection, known as Easter in the Occident. It varies from year to year because we date it using the Julian Calendar. All Orthodox jurisdictions do this! Every four years it is the same as the western Gregorian Easter, such as 2003 when all christians celebrated it on April 11, yet in 2004 the Orthodox will celebrate it on May first while the West will celebrate it March 27.
The Orthodox Church is split on the calendar issue for non-Paschal feasts, such as Christmas. In 1920 Patriarch Meletios Metazaxis of Constantinople, whose rumored to have been a freemason, un-canonically changed to the Gregorian calendar and many jurisdictions followed suit after several years, including the jurisdiction I belong to. However the majority of Orthodox Christians who belong to jurisdictions such as Russia, the largest by far, Serbia, Jerusalem, Bulgaria, and others maintained using the Julian Calendar for all feasts. Some local parishes and diocese broke off from their jurisdiction when it accepted the Gregorian Calendar and are known as Old Caledarist.
By the way, this is not a 'theological' issue, in fact such disputes are commong in church history. Personally I think my jurisdiction should return to celebrating Christmas according to the Julian calendar, but whether we do or not does not matter because no one knows when Our Lord Jesus Christ was really born!
The reason why this is a big deal to Orthodox is Unity! Many like me believe that Patriarch Metazaxis was trying to unify the Orthodox with the West and that's why he changed the calendar.
He instead should have been concerned about the Unity of the One True Orthodox Church.
With regard to Cambodia I cannot help you, maybe it was an Orthodox mission? I don't know.

Greek Orthodox Christmas = Dec 25th
Every other Orthodox chruch = Jan 7th
Orthodox Easter is celebrated using the old calender and can't come before Jewish Passover so the Orthodox Easter is on the same day as the western Easter every few years, but usualy is after.

Iranians, Palestinians, Saudis Captured in Najaf
Via
Glenn Reynolds,
Hammorabi is blogging from Najaf:
Many Groups of Sadr Militia surrendered to the Iraqi Police and Coalition forces after they gave up their arms. Among them are children less than 12 years old given RPG 7 and Kalashnikovs?....
Iran frustrated by the news of thousands of the militia it trained started to surrender and among them many Iranians, and Arabs. This makes an Iranian top leader to announce that the US will soon face a similar defeat like Vietnam War! A clear sign indicating the involvement of Iran in what is going on in Najaf and the Iraq...
The Iraqi Police arrested in Baghdad Iranians, Palestinians and Saudi criminals today!

Is he for real? I don't want to waste my time if he's not. Sadr's militia are called by another name = "Hendi?" Sistani leaves the country for medical care and this guy breaks the peace accord and starts war all over again and the only reason why we have not whipped them and made them kiss Allah's behind is because it's a HOLY city?? So is Jerusalem, but you won't find me there! Another comment elsewhere are from Iraqi's who blame the Iranians - I'm not kidding, that's who they say are coming in there causing all the problems. Problems - right, that's putting it mildly. Yup, Iraqi's blame Iran and Syria. Now if these people were so well equipped, had all these weapons and whatnot, why didn't they revolt against Saddam instead of the people who are trying to help them??? I don't get it - so is this guy for real or what?

Ok, on tv on all the channels, and Hammorabi website, all say that 80% of Najaf is stable; that Al Sadr has been injured but those reports are different. Of Course, he's held up in that famous and holy of holy mosque and they are trying to broker a peace with him and his group. WHY??? This has got to be incredibly frustrating for our military. Hey, they made a peace accord in April, too, but as soon as SISTANI left the country to seek medical care, Al Sadr went to work. A lot of people think that if this radical gets killed, he'll become a martyr BUT Iraqi's in that area actually PROTESTED about this guy - can you imagine them protesting? It's true; they want it stopped and ended so they protested Al Sadr to stop. He did. Also a british soldier was killed (in 8 days, only one troop was killed??) and a british journalist (probably embeded) was kidnapped and the video showed that they would kill him if the US and coalition destroyed that holiest of mosques used to hide out these Hehdi militants, Al Sadr and their weapons cache. Why don't we just bomb it and kill those bastards??!!?!?!? Get rid of them once and for all??? In keeping with my rant, why didn't these people do this when Saddam was in power?? Maybe if THEY had, WE would not have had to invade their country and lose so many of our troops. But I do not get the Iran connection.

War Looms Between Russia and Georgia
From
Xinhuanet:
Three people have been killed and several others wounded in an overnight shelling in Georgia's separatist region of South Ossetia.
Irina Gagloyeva, head of the South Ossetian Information and Press Committee, says Tskhinvali, the capital of Ossetia, and surrounding Ossetian villages were heavily shelled by Georgians the previous night.
Earlier on Thursday, the leadership of self-run South Ossetia issued an ultimatum to Georgia, demanding that it stop the shelling at Tskhinvali within 30 minutes, or they would eliminate the armed forces that had filtered into the conflict zone between South Ossetia and Georgia.
Tension has been high between Tbilisi and South Ossetia since late May over the status of the breakaway region.
Remember this word:
Ossetia. Ossetia is a province of Georgia (the country,
dumbass) that is ethnically Russian--a result of Tsarist Russian Imperialism, Stalin's Russification policy (ironic, because Stalin was a Georgian not a Russian), and borders drawn under the Soviets. Ossetia has been functionally free from Georgia since the collapse of the USSR.
I went to college in Russia for a year and can tell you that there is a deep feeling of solidarity between citizens of Russia and Russians living abroad. Russian nationalism is not based entirely on ethnicity. Rather, to be truly Russian you must be Orthodox as well. One can be ethnically Russian, and still be considered an outsider. This is why Jews never really fit in. In fact, Russians feel a much deeper solidarity with Serbs, who are also Slavic and Orthodox, than they do with Jews, Gypsies, and Asians living in Russia proper. This explains why Russia would not allow approval of a UN resolution authorizing force in Yugoslavia. To Russians, an attack on Yugoslavia is nearly an attack on the motherland itself.
So, the fact that a tense ceasefire has been broken in Ossetia's civil war with Georgia, means that a broader regional war could break out. Georgia also has had long standing border disputes with it's other neighbors. This is bad.

Beheading Victim Egyptian, Not American
Notice they're called
The Green Brigade. I assume it has something to do with the sacred color of the Religion of Peas. More below.
UPDATE: Just as I posted this I found another story from the Hindustan Times:
One Islamic Web site carried the video with the headline: "Beheading an Egyptian agent of the CIA."
One commentator on another forum cited reports of the beheading of an Egyptian spy and asked if this was the same man. ....
On the tape, a man was heard telling the captive in Arabic "put down your hand, this is the last time, next time I will gouge your eyes out." Then in English, he tells the captive, "open your eyes, open your eyes."
I had
earlier speculated that the victim was an Iraqi local, probably Kurdish. The note around the victims neck was a dead give away, at the least, that he was not a CIA agent.

Doc, I think it was a video of two. Can't be sure. Read it was two - an Egyptian and an American CIA agent although how would they know it was a CIA agent??? That dead guy they beheaded seemed local to me over there but even CNN reports it was two people who were beheaded. And that it was done in Iran?? Aren't they holding an Egyptian diplomat?? Could that beheaded man be him?? I guess we'll have to keep scrambling to find out. Either way, the people who do this thing should be shot - dead and anyone else who's like them.

Koch Endorses Bush: Sites Terrorism/Growing Anti-Semitism
For a long time I've argued with Jewish blog-buddies that the day a Republican get's 30% of the Jewish vote is the day Elijah comes to the seder. Folks, you did remember to put some food in front of that extra seat, right?
Man, I never liked this guy...til now!
Newsmax:
My decision to vote for the re-election of President George W. Bush, despite the fact that I am a lifelong Democrat, has caused some to call me a turncoat. But am I really? Or am I moving in a direction the Democratic Party itself should be going?....
Why have I endorsed George W. Bush when I don't agree with him on a single domestic issue? Because I believe the issue of international terrorism trumps all other issues. I don't believe the Democratic Party has the stomach and commitment to deliver on this issue.
Over the years, I have expressed my anxieties at the escalating worldwide anti-Semitism that now abounds in Western European countries such as France, England, Germany, Belgium, Holland and throughout Eastern Europe, including Russia. We haven't seen the likes of this rising tide of hatred directed at Jews since the 1930s. So, of course, I am interested in the views of the two presidential candidates toward Israel and its security.
President George W. Bush has amazed me. Bush 41, the father, was not particularly good on this issue. I do not believe that he is anti-Semitic, but his secretary of state, James Baker, perhaps summed up the attitude prevailing in that administration when he said: "F--- the Jews. They don't vote for us anyway."
Bush 43, the son, has fallen far from that tree. I believe most Jewish leaders will concede that of all U.S. presidents, Bush 43 has been the most supportive and protective of the security of the State of Israel.
Jews have priorities and are entitled to them just like every other ethnic group in America....
"For Jews, it is the security of the State of Israel. When 200 French Jews recently left France out of fear of persecution by Muslim toughs in that country, they knew that Israel would take them without condition, which was not the case when Jews were fleeing Germany before World War II.
"However, you are misinformed on my position as to why I support President Bush for reelection. I support him because of the Bush Doctrine, "we will go after the terrorists and the countries that harbor them." He has demonstrated that he means it by invading Afghanistan and Iraq, both threats to their regions and to the U.S. I do not believe that the Democratic Party, which is now dominated by those who preferred Governor Dean for president, but decided he could not win, has the stomach to take on worldwide terrorism. Indeed, a New York Times-CBS poll of the delegates at the Boston Convention demonstrated their opposition to John Kerry's position which is not to get out of Iraq now. It is the party activists who the candidate has to rely on to get elected and whose positions generally prevail.
"I have held public office for 23 years. I was elected five times as Congressman and three times as Mayor with super majorities after the first election for each office. New Yorkers trusted my insights and common sense, and I believe they still do. The Islamic terrorists, in the words of Lee Hamilton, "want to kill us," and there are hundreds of millions of them. I want a President who is willing to go after them before they have the chance to kill us.
"There is nothing wrong with American Jews, concerned for the safety of all Americans, to be grateful that President Bush supports the State of Israel when European states in fear of terrorism capitulate to the demands of the terrorists and are hostile to Israel.
That sound you hear is me eating crow. If Bush can just get 10% more of the Jewish vote in Florida than in 2000....well, the party is over. Bush wins.

I disagree. I think that for a group of people that "claim they represent only 2%" of our total population, I cant help but feel we as Americans are being sold out to the Jewish lobby group and its financial supporters. I for one was a Republican the first time around and this time around I voted independant.
I think that all this BS about anything that questions the actions of Israel and its alarmingly strong connection to the United States financial coffers as alarming.
Look when you have 33% of the total wealth of the United states controlled by Jews (From the book Jewish Phenomenon) you cant help but feel that the majority of the US assets are being controlled by a small group of people that are putting the state of Israels interests first and US inetersts second.
You cannot be anything but a fool to believe that the US was attacked on September 11th for our values. If that was the case Switzerland and the Netherlands should be wiped off the face of the earth since they live in a more liberal lifestyle than America does.
The question you have to ask yourself is this "Why is it that you can question and demand explanantion of actions from every single religion and race in this country but the Jews?"
You can question and demand actions of Catholic Priests
You can Question the actions of Communist countries all over the world
You can qustion the actions of affirmative action now.
You can question the issue of gay marriage and abortion
BUT YOU CAN NEVER EVER REALLY QUESTION THE JEWS AND ISRAEL IN THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT BEING LABLED AN ANTI-SEMITE!!!
That my friends is danger.

You can book this: W carries the South - every single state, including border states like MO and AK, maybe even WV. The possible exception to Johnny Walker Red's Solid South Factor (TM) is Florida.
Bush lost some Cuban votes there with his travel restrictions. Arguably a good move morally, but a bad move politically. Not sure the Koch endorsement will help in Boca Raton and Palm Beach. (Imagine being in FL this November - thousands of lawyers, protesters, press, UN monitors - I get queasy just thinking about it).
I think he might get NH. Live free or die. I read something recently about how the NH natives are annoyed at all the Massholes moving there to flee MA taxes, and then voting to raise NH taxes!
I don't know about PA and OH. We could have 3 Floridas this year, God forbid.
You could be right about NM - Richardson, a Dem, cut taxes there. The Bushies seem to be going after the Latino vote pretty hard. The worker-permit thing might get a handful of votes there.
Bush looked less ridiculous eating corn than Kerry did brandishing it like a pair of marital aids - I say IA goes to W.
According to electoral-vote.com, even WI and MN look up for grabs; I would've assumed they were true blue.
I hate it when it's this close.

Beheaded man 'not CIA agent'
See
this post in which I speculated that the man being beheaded in the al Qaeda snuff film was probably not a CIA operative. There is no doubt that the beheading film is real, but the victim was most likely not CIA.
Agence France Presse:
A US official denied today that a CIA agent had been beheaded in Iraq, as claimed by an Islamist website that broadcast a video purporting to show the decapitation.
"The man depicted in the video is not a CIA official," the official said, on condition of anonymity.
"No CIA official is missing," the official said, adding that the Central Intelligence Agency knows the whereabouts of everyone on its payroll....
During the four-minute video, an identity card is shown with the purported American's photograph and the mention "visitor".
But the gunmen's words are unintelligible, apart from their cry of "Allah Akbar" (God is great) when the head is cut off.
Like I said, that was the giveaway. But someone died in that video. When we learn of his name, we'll add him to the
list of victims.

I've seen the video - and the only thing I offer is that I think the victim was dead before he was beheaded... he's obviously drugged in the early part (I've seen the 4 minute version) and there is not much, if any, arterial spurting in the part where he's actually beheaded.
