Al Qaeda's New Magazine Urges (surprise) Jihad in Iraq, Advice to Brad Pitt
Al Qaeda has a new internet based magazine, one that is sure to give Martha Stewart's
Living a run for its money.
Guardian:
A new online magazine purportedly posted by al-Qaida's affiliate in Iraq has launched an effort to recruit Muslims to rid Iraq of infidels and apostates [eg]...Americans and their Iraqi partners.
The colorful, well-designed magazine is named Zurwat al-Sanam, Arabic for ``The Tip of the Camel's Hump'' - a reference among Islamic militants to ``the epitome of belief and virtuous activity.''
Friend of the Jawa Report, counter-terrorism expert, and
fellow blogger Evan Kohlmann also gets mention.
Washington-based counterterrorism expert Evan Kohlmann told The Associated Press the magazine aims at ``conveying the sense that the organization is professional, capable and really understands what they're doing.''
It was designed as ``an attempt to refute the idea that al-Zarqawi and these people are desperate. ... It shows that these people have time on their hands and don't have to worry about mobility.''
Indeed. The report does not mention the fact that the new magazine will feature a centerfold patterned after the British tabloids. Abu Maysara al-Iraqi, the designated ``media coordinator'' for al-Zarqawi's group refused to put pictures of two-humped camels, though, as that would be considered ''indecent''. Instead a single
camelus dromedarius is shown, its genitelia covered by a well-placed IED.
SITE adds this about the internet porno-mag for the death-cultist camel-humping jihadis:
“This is a loud cry,” it explains, “written by young writers to keep Allah’s words, which we share with our sword-carrying brothers, about what Allah gave us about wisdom and guidance in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and understanding the Sahaba and their followers [so we may] pledge to people [entrance] to the Garden of Eden.”
Repeating the importance of the sword in the religion of Islam, the authors go on to state that “our call is to make the word of Allah the highest, and the Sharia will rule the East and West of the Earth, to wipe out unbelievers wherever they are and in any form.”
The backpage is full of helpful advice in a column titled
Dear Imam AchmedDear Imam Achmed,
Is it harem for Brad Pitt to divorce Jennifer Annistons (sic)?
Signed,
Pop-shahid in Yemen
Dear Pop-shahid in Yemen,
It is harem as long as Brad says I divorce thee three times, but it is not recommended.
I would also recommend that you spend less time worrying about the infidels in Zionist controlled Hollywood and come to Iraq to cut the heads off the Zionist-Crusader forces. If you can get Brad Pitt to come then Allah assures he will have 72 virgins--each more beautiful than that whore Jennifer Aniston--in paradise.
Allahu-akhbar,
Imam Achmed

People Unclear on the Concept: Qaddafi Calls USA 'dictatorship'
Novinite:
In his speech on the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Libyan Jamahiriyah (popular republic), Qaddafi described the United States, Britain and Italy as dictatorships, which should learn “genuine democracy” in Libya.
Either Qaddafi believes his own BS about the 'party-less' state or he's been reading a lot of dKos.
Hat tip: Chad Evans
UPDATE: Jeff at Beautiful Attrocities notes some of Qaddafi's other brilliant statements.

Bali Bombing Mastermind Sentenced to 4.5 days in Jail per Victim
Our
allies in the Global War on Terror have finally convicted Abu Bakar Bashir (Ba'asyir), the mastermind of the Bali nightclub bombing, to a
lengthy sentence. What does the mass murder of 202 infidels get you in Indonesia?
30 months.
That's 2.5 years.
That's 900 days.
That's 4.5 days per victim.
And who does the New York Times blame for the light sentence? Who else but G.W. Bush.

You guys are completely wrong. The fact that Indonesia DIDN'T sentence Bashir more severely is a positive affirmation of how the democratic rule of law has taken root in Indonesia.
Bashir was NOT found guilty of masterminding the plot - by all accounts it took a hell of a lot of legal wrangling to even get this short sentence imposed on him. If a man is found innocent of a crime, yet still receives heavy punishment, then the Government handing down the sentence is an oppressive regime. WE DO NOT NEED THE MOST POPULOUS MUSLIM COUNTRY IN THE WORLD TO RETURN TO TYRANNY AND OPPRESSION. We'd only get burnt in the end, as would they.
I don't know why you're all implying the Indonesian Government is sympathetic with terrorists - they incurred a massive economic, not to mention human, toll due to Bali and you can bet they want justice as much as you guys did after 9/11.
Why are people on this blog so quick to vilify Muslims? It's not helpful.
PS To preempt some criticism - I'm not defending Bashir, he's clearly an assmuncher. I'm defending the rule of law.

I would say this is an important step if Jordan now takes measures to capture him. The fact that his country of origin recognizes him as a criminal means that he is not considered a freedom fighter and that is very important.

It's taken Jordan long enough. Guess the first measure to make him a glorious martyred hero didn't go over in the international pocketbook (read: US finalcial support) so they had to come up with something more fitting for him.

Heh. And now that the pullout seems pretty likely, you start seeing all these other Middle East countries suddenly demand that Syria pull out. And when Syria does, they'll claim credit for it.
Frankly, I'd say the people of Lebanon are more responsible for Syria pulling out than Bush. He hasn't done anything different in the last few months than he has in the last 4 years, so you can hardly credit him. The pullout was the direct consequence of being undeniably responsible for the assassination a few days ago, and being called on it. The Syrians knew they couldn't stay in Lebanon with all that evidence against them.

The MSM has been on the wrong side of history for 55 years. They still refuse to acknowledge that Ronnie and SDI crushed the USSR. Even after the former head of the USSR said as much last June, as did Maggie and Lech Walesa at his funeral. The MSM has said the War on Terror was a "Quagmire" for 2.5 years. Since the very successful election in Iraq in Jan they are now calling it a failur. Of course they can not give Bush credit for either Egype or Lebanon. The War on Terror is a failure! Are these signs of failure?

So George Bush's speech saying Syria out of Lebanon did not give strenght to the lebanese. Bush's victory in Iraq did not give them courage. Bush's victory is Afghanistan did not affect the Lebanese people's minds. Bush's recent comments concerning Syria and Iran hasn't made the Syrians think about their futures. BULLSHIT!!!!!!
Terrorists and terrorist supporting states are beginning to believe Georgie means what he says.
Until Reagan and the Bushes no one in the world believed the United States was serious. Paper Tiger.
There was a reason the Iranians released the prisoners the day before Reagan took office. The same reason the Syrians are getting the hell out of Lebanon. AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT THAT MEANS WHAT HE SAYS. Hail Bush. He's a winner. However, there's still some poor losers out there. Bush not only had to defeat the enemy, but also the enemy within. Hmm, I dunno. See, the pro-Syrian government of Lebanon had already resigned when Bush made this "demand" for Syria to leave. With or without Bush's demand, Syria was going to pull its troops out of Lebanon for the simple reason that without a friendly government to give their presence "credibility," staying in Lebanon to "stabilize" the country would be pretty much impossible.
I'd be really surprised to see the Bush administration really try anything too serious with the Syrians. Syria's distaste of Islamic fascism is almost as deep as the United States'. Their crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood (the ideological precursor to groups like al Qaeda and Hezbollah) is well-documented.

Bush has nothing to do with this pull out.. While the White House, for years, has maintained a policy that has been aimed at removing syria from Lebanon for both interests of Israeli and regional stability and to control Islamic terrorists. If anyone played a role in this, it would be the Lebanese who for years have had to deal with Syrian involvement in what should be their soveirgn affairs
Anybody think that Saudi pressure could mean a renewed political warr with Israel in the interests of securing the Golan for the Lebanese?...

Pearl Murder Accomplice Caught in Pakistan
Via
Jeff Quinton this news that Mohammad Sohail, the man suspected of videotaping Daniel Pearl as he was murdered, was arrested today in Pakistan! May he rot in hell.
Channel News Asia:
Pakistani police arrested a militant who was sentenced to death in his absence for a 2002 suicide bomb which killed 11 French engineers and who may be linked to the murder of US reporter Daniel Pearl, officials said.
Police said they suspect Islamic extremist Mohammad Sohail may have filmed the beheading of the Wall Street Journal correspondent, who was abducted in the volatile southern city of Karachi in early 2002.
A member of the Harkat Jihad-e-Islami militant group, he was detained after falling off a motorbike during a shootout with police in Karachi, city police officer Mohammad Fayyaz told AFP.
"He was arrested after he fell down from a motorcycle, while five other terrorists escaped after firing at police," Fayyaz said of the arrest.
Fayyaz said that during an initial interrogation Sohail had confessed to a role in the death of Pearl and a December 2003 suicide attack on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
"He could be the cameraman who made the video of Pearl's slaying and we are interrogating him," the officer added.
Meanwhile, Daniel Pearl's father continues the struggle against the hate ideology that killed his son by speaking to
various groups around the country:
"Dr. Pearl and his wife (Ruth) have made a decision to take this brutal hurt and make something constructive out of it," said Rabbi Herbert N. Schwartz, spiritual leader of Temple Beth El.
Schwartz said Pearl's talk will center on choosing hope over anger and peace over conflict. Pearl will encourage Jews to embrace their faith, all the while inviting dialogue among different religions and races.
"He ultimately takes a look at who his son is, why he died, and how did (Daniel's) Jewish life contribute to this wider vision of understanding in the world," Schwartz said.

Way back, we found a propaganda video using Daniel Pearl; he was made to say many things and really wasn't aware that in the end, he would be killed. Based on that video alone, the music, the set-up, the propanganda, it was very much like the early video's used by Osama Bin Laden and Al Zaqawi. At the very end of the video, it showed Danny Pearl's head being help up by a hand. Zaqawi's computer is set up a certain way and they use these video's to get others to join them. At the time, we didn't know of Zarqawi, but it was definitely his work. They also got the person whom they believed killed Daniel Pearl. It's only later it was made into a propaganda video.

A letter was smuggled out of the central prison in SanaÂ’a, Yemen from Mr. Abdulkarim al-Khaiwani to

Furthermore, solidarity with my issue was prohibited and people in solidarity were punished and even terrorized to visit me in prison or declare their solidarity. In addition, the journalistsÂ’ syndicate is falling under tremendous pressures. I believe in democracy, freedom, equality and rights and am willing to sacrifice for their sake simply because I do not wish my children to suffer dictatorship and I will strive to provide them with a better future.

Terrorists Using Internet Cafes to Coordinate Attacks
A very interesting
Newsday article discusses the nature of the Iraqi insurgency and speculates on the whereabouts of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The main thrust of the article is that Zarqawi is not nearly as central to the insurgency as many believe. The main leadership of the insurgency is a revised Baathist party. Buried in the report is this interesting piece of information:
Most of the communication between various militant groups, including al-Zarqawi and his supporters, is done through Internet cafes. "Telephone communications in Iraq are difficult," Majid said, "but the Internet is everywhere and it is difficult to track."
American Intelligence is in very bad shape when it comes to monitoring Islamic bulletin boards and message forums. These forums are well known places of jihadi activity. While the better known forums such as al Ansar (now The Islamic News Network) are used to promote jihadi propaganda and post messages for the Western media which monitors its activities, thousands of other small internet groups have formed around the goal of global jihad. Many of them use well known places of virtual gathering such as Yahoo Groups.
If US Intelligence truly wishes to fight the global jihad, then these forums must be shut down. Whether or not we use legal injunctions or covert cyber-attacks, it does not matter. What matters is that the main tool for terrorist communications must be broken.
It might be argued that the Intelligence community allows these forums to continue operation as a source of tracking the terrorist networks. If this is the case then US Intelligence operations are operating in a pre-911 law enforcement mode. Disrupting the capability of terrorist cells is far more important than capturing any single terrorist. This is not a law enforcement exercise we are engaged in, this is war.

Interesting about the Internet cafes and Yahoo Groups - not because it seems clever, quite the opposite, actually. They're pretty low-tech resources to communicate and easily monitored by law enforcement agencies.
I've read that the more "technologically advanced" terrorists use stenography to communicate, which is pretty much impossible (at this point, anyways) to prevent or interpret. Considering it's done through completely innocuous websites (like, say, a sports website) means that you have no idea if what you're seeing is the intended image.
Internet cafes, I'd think, would be used by terrorists that are lower on the food chain.
Posted by: Venom at March 01, 2005 10:07 AM (dbxVM)
2
What's interesting, though, is that it seems that many of the terrorists actually use the internet to communicate. This is actually telling about the nature of our enemy. They aren't nearly as well-funded or organized as they once were or presume that they are today.
Posted by: Rusty Shackleford at March 01, 2005 10:46 AM (JQjhA)
3
Makes you wonder...obviously, some are using the Internet in Iraq itself to coordinate terrorist strikes. Which means, there must be an Iraqi ISP that grants them the use of the Internet...so, whose checking out the ISPs to determine the extent of the terrorist activity? It's been almost 2 years since the invasion - surely by now they've had enough time to monitor this (unless I'm completely wrong and there is no Internet service/Iraqi ISPs).
Posted by: Venom at March 01, 2005 10:53 AM (dbxVM)

Internet cafes for terrorist planning? I think it's the caffiene.
Posted by: Bryan at March 01, 2005 10:58 AM (k9Enm)
5
The brilliance of using an internet cafe is that the ISP is subscribed by the owner of the company. The user is then anonymous. I'm not sure we should be going after the ISPs, but maybe we should be going after the webhost of these forums.
