Mount St. Helens May be Heading for the Big One

Seattle's KIRO:

Scientists said the earthquakes and explosions at Mount St. Helens could lead to an eruption as powerful as the one in 1980, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.
The volcano reportedly spewed more steam overnight, but earthquakes continued to be fairly light, striking about once a minute and registering about magnitude one.

Meanwhile, the speculation continued about what exactly is happening underneath the mountain.

Scientists said part of the lava dome in the volcano's crater has risen 50 to 100 feet since Tuesday, a sign -- along with mild earthquake activity -- that molten rock may be moving toward the surface without much resistance.

1 Heard this on the radio this morning, and overnight on the news on TV. They do think, thankfully, that because of the evacuations that have taken place, that the loss of life wouldn't be there - but the land would have one heck of a recovery time.

2 They lost people in 1980 because they refused to take the warnings seriously and evacuate. And even though they closed down the mountain prior to the erruption, people insisted they open it back up. So loss of life will be a non-issue this time. There was a lot of prediction prior to that erruption, that it would take a long time for the land to recover. Then they were shocked at how quickly it came back. The media builds this up as a big deal, because that's what they do. Ash clean up is a mess. It kills your car and is dangerous for those with respiratory problems. Compared to things like tornadoes & hurricanes, it's nowhere near as destructive. There simply isn't the development around St. Helens that there are around other volcanoes in the area like Mt. Rainier & Mt. Hood. When those become active, then things will get interesting.

3 As a lifelong native of the PNW, I agree with Teri's assessment.
