Finals Live Blogging

Ever wonder what a professor thinks during a final? Here's your chance to find out!! I will be live-blogging the final I will be giving at 10:30 a.m. (Central) right here. Good times all-around!! Other than that, blogging will be light.

Scroll past the pic for updates.

10:45 Just gave out finals. Since I'm heading out of town I decided to go with an all multiple choice exam. I know it's kind of a cop out, but there's just no way I can grade that many tests before my plane takes off. At least it's comprehensive.

10:50 What really surprises me about this class is how many students show up for the final who never--NEVER--come to class. What are they thinking? This is the first time I've taught this particular class. There's no Frat/Soror test bank they can cheat from. I just finished making the exam an hour ago. Sent to the photocopier half an hour ago. No way to cheat.

10:52 15 minutes into the test and one person done already???? Was it that easy??? It was 55 questions long!!!

10:55 Scantron test vs. essay. Multiple choice tests suck to write. Can I hear a shout-out about that y'all?!? Seriously, they suck. For each question you have to come up with four answers, and a good multiple choice exam So the major disadvantage to them is they require a lot of prep time. The advantage is that they take next to no time to grade.

Essays take almost no time to write but FOREVER to grade. The major pitfall in an essay test is that if you're pressed for time you stop actually reading the things and start scanning for key words.

10:58 Screams of exhaltation in the halls. Poked my head out. Not one of my students. Good. The screams seem to be from a student who just aced a final in another class. Why do they feel they need to share their joy with every one on the floor?

11:00 50% of students done now. I sense that I made a huge error in judgement on the difficulty level of this test. Way too easy. It was designed to be a one hour test.

11:02 I hate it when students wear hats on a test day. Way too easy to conceal answers on the inside of the cap's bill.

11:03 Here's a bonus point question for your amusement. This is an actual question. Can you guess the answer?

#54--How much does freedom cost?
a) $1.05
b) $10.95
c) $1,115.95
d) $1,095,05.05

11:05 Another bonus question
#51--Patty and Selma Bouviere worke at what government bureaucracy?
a) the Springfield lottery commission
b) the Springfield DMV
c) the Springfield Motor Speedway
d) the Springfiel Isotopes' front office

11:10 All students done. Are you freaking kidding me?? WAY TOO EASY. Man, I have really misunderestimated the difficulty of the test.

Two general reactions from students.

The Bullshitters. This group moaned when they heard that there would be no essay portion of the test. I usually include one or two essays for all my tests. This group knows how to BS so well that they always do especially well on essays. Their use of the English language is usually spot on and they usually write well. The two strongest reactions came from the two students preparing for law-school. Oddly enough, one of them is a cheerleader. You don't often find a cheerleader heading for law school. The other one is on the debate team. No shock there.

The Slackers. This group let out whoops of elation on hearing the news. The way they figure it, they've got a 1 in 4 chance of guessing the answer right. This includes most of our Criminal Justice majors and the odd person out of the Education department. Are CJ majors this bad at all schools?? The thing is that the CJ profs here seem pretty tough and both have rigorous academic training and publication records. But how come all the dull students seem to congegate toward that major??

Last note. One of my top students asked if it would be alright to not turn in a term paper. The paper alone is worth 20% of the grade. He says he just doesn't care about the grade in the class and he had too much other work to do. Of course I told him it was his grade and I would sleep fine at night with him getting a C. But I must admit that this bothers me some. He's the guy that set the curve--literally. On the one hand I know that other priorities must sometimes come before school, but on the other hand it shows that this class means little to him. That my lectures meant little to him. That I mean little too him.

So, if you ever sluff off doing a paper or taking a test do us all a favor--come up with a lame excuse. Our egos are tied to these things. We do take it personally. Look, no one I know got into this racquet for the money. We do it for a number of reasons, but at some level I think all of us enjoy seeing students learn. If you don't value what we're doing keep it to yourself. It may be less than honest, but at least you'll be making me feel better.

1 My 80s nostalgia movie post is better than your 80s nostalgia movie post! Though I am now tempted to live-blog during the three exams I have to run...

2 Ben Stein, as wonderful a writer as he is, just has never had that stud thing going , has he? What could you blog but enjoying the tense suffering of your students? I say give them a Christmas gift. When the test is over announce that in the spirit of giving each will recieve 5 extra points or a Christmas fruitcake, their choice. They will love you (and remember you) forever.

3 I say demand either 5 points from their exams or a Christmas fruitcake. Then they will fear you forever!

4 Flea, everything you write is better than the crap I post. I met Stein once, he said, "Use drugs. Some of my greateast memories are from when I was high." Fruitcake? Dude, gross.

5 DUH, 1) A 2) B Do I get blog rolled for that?

Posted by: Editor at December 13, 2004 11:10 AM (adpJH)

6 Dude, you're not on the blogroll?? My bad.

Posted by: Rusty at December 13, 2004 11:20 AM (JQjhA)

7 Once again your in class live blogging kicks ass. Can I get that cheerleader/law school students number? I'm sure my wife wouldn't mind. MMMmmm brains and ass.

8 No prob, Rust. It's no deal @ all. Digger, Dude, did you see the LAWYER part? Where in the heck did you bet "brains" outta that?

9 Ahhh another prof. debates the mysteries of multiple choice vs. essay. I found in u-grad essay rocked because I was an excellent bullshitter. I found in law school-multiple choice rocks because everybody knows the same bullshit, the prof.'s just like the way certain people put it down on paper. I guarantee you like 80% of your class know that Patty & Selma work at the DMV-how else would Grandpa have ever gotten his driving priveleges reinstated (His DL photo was so much better than mine too-got get one of me yelling at a cloud instead of trying not to close my eyes). BTW this debate is going on over at: Brad DeLong's Blog Although he's debating open v. closed book. With open book stomping closed book in to the ground and spitting on it just for good measure.

10 1) A 2) B Can I also get blog rolled for that??? (Although I have been told it is agressive and brazen to ask, but hey, since he did. 3 things: 1)Did Stein really say that? I miss his writing in the American Spectator. 2)I resent the cheerleader/law school remark. Ex cheerleaders make great lawyers, very enthusiastic and very loyal to the client. (YaY Team!)...;-) 3)That was sweet how much you really cared what your student thought.

11 Rightwingsparkle--sorry for the blogroll omission. I knew I had forgotten to do something after I met you at the Commissar's chat.

12 Rusty: I urge you to reconsider your position on the guy who does not want to turn in a term paper. I worked my way through school, and used to deal with professors on reloading what counted for what percentage of my grade to accommodate a work schedule. I usually asked them to load on my exams and let me slide on out of class work as much as possible. It may have nothing to do with what he thinks or feels about you and your subject. Is that you in that picture? It's kinda how I pictured that cowbythe udders guy, not. I picture you as a wookie.

13 The reason people finish multiple choice exams so quickly The (depending on the subject matter, but by and large this holds true), is that with most subject you can't "show your work" or otherwise work through the problem. A calculus test, that's possible. But in most cases, you can't really reason out what the answer is (though you might be able to eliminate 2 answers off the bat). Either you know it, or you don't. Rarely does it happen that you answer (A), and then have an epiphany whereby you realize that (C) is really the right answer. Unless you actually REMEMBER that (C) is the right answer, you're not going to "tease out" that fact by spending a lot of time on the question. Case in point, my International Law final was both essay and multiple choice--MC was 15 questions in 40 minutes. I finished in 20 minutes. Doesn't mean the questions were easy, but that once you've got the answer down, not a whole of salvaging you can do with it.

14 I agree with Mr.K. Don't judge the guy too harshly. I am one of those people who got my B.S. and half of my M.S. about 15 years ago. Now when I take a class, it's just to keep some of my skills current. It's not that I don't take the class material seriously. It's that I don't take the grade seriously. If I feel like I've upgraded my skill set, that's all I care about. If I feel like the class is worthless, I would have stopped going long before the project became due. In other words, I don't take classes to try and pad a GPA. I do it for my own self-satisfaction and I know exactly what I want out of the class. Before taking any class, I always see if I can audit the class since it's cheaper.

15 I was worried two of my multiple-choice midterms were too easy when everybody finished early but then I nailed 70% (that's B- in Canadian) averages in both which is exactly where I wanted the average to be. So maybe you don't have to worry.

16 And my writing is so not better than yours. My Molly Ringwald provocation barely stirred any debate today.

17 Best "F" answer on a college poli-sci test .. Blank page until you get to the gottom where the kid wrote: "You gotta be kidding."

18 Don't criticize the guy with the hat!! I've been wearing hats for years before exams...no cheating...I promise. I had a physics professor who said that people who were hats were dumber. I promptly made a 100 on his second exam (and A's on the others)...he can kiss my ass.

19 Of course, I did just spell wear wrong. ::takes off hat::

20 F for you Jeremy.

21 I'd have been tempted to tell mr. priorities that it's a good thing this wasn't a math class (it's not a math class, right? ;-) since he didn't really need to ask about the paper and he knew he'd pass without it... and a bonus -5% of his grade for style points on the "just don't care about the grade" bit. if he doesn't care, why would he presume that you do? he's not taking any more classes with prof Rusty is my bet. his loss.
