Soldiers Cleared in Sgrena Shooting

Not that we predicted this or anything. Remember, we are Sgrena central. This was a joint report, meaning the Italians seem to be on board with the findings. We will update this post later as the official report is due out sometime today. MSNBC:

Now, NBC News has learned that a preliminary report from a joint U.S.-Italian investigation has cleared the American soldiers of any wrongdoing and provides new details into the shooting.

Intelligence agent Calipari had just negotiated Sgrena's release from Iraqi kidnappers on March 4 when the two and a driver headed for the Baghdad airport in a compact rental car.

It was dark when the Italians turned onto a ramp leading to the airport road where the U.S. military had set up a temporary checkpoint.

The investigation found the car was about 130 yards from the checkpoint when the soldiers flashed their lights as a warning to stop. But the car kept coming and, at 90 yards, warning shots were fired. At 65 yards, when the car failed to stop, the soldiers used lethal force — a machine gun burst that killed Calipari and wounded Sgrena and the driver.

Senior U.S. military officials say it took only about four seconds from the first warning to the fatal shots, but insist the soldiers acted properly under the current rules of engagement.

The investigation failed, however, to resolve one critical dispute: The Americans claim the car was racing toward the checkpoint at about 50 miles per hour, the Italians say it was traveling at a much slower speed.

In Italy, agent Calipari was given a state funeral, but the investigation found he himself may have committed a fatal error. He reportedly chose not to coordinate his movements with the U.S. military for fear it would jeopardize his efforts to free the Italian hostage.

Now you'll excuse me while I go celebrate. Hat tip Seeker.

Boughyah notices that WaPo, NYT, LA Times passing on the story. Is this true?

2 That's right, Carlos. And it's all because there is still a mystery regarding how fast the unreported, unknown-to-US troops vehicle (that did not stop at the flashing lights/warning shots) was going. Regardless of these "facts" discovered, if the US military is wrong about just one piece of the entire jigsaw puzzle, that means Sgrena could obviously be 100% right about everything and we should all be thankful that she survived those 300-400 shots that all entered through the same 3 holes.

4 I'm not surprised by the verdict. Everyone knows that all 100,000 innocents killed by the Americans in Iraq was just due to an honest mistake. One after another after another.

5 >>>in my worst Dr. Evil impersonation>>> Greg, you mean all one-billion GAZILLION innocents! buahaha!

6 Yes Greg.... we know. Now won't you go with the nice men in the white uniforms. They will talk with you and one may even have a lollipop.

Posted by: traderrob at April 14, 2005 10:15 AM (3al54)

7 Of course they let them go. Those guys have no guts, they shoot everyone they see because they're so scared. All killing in there counts as accidents happening in temporary insanity.

8 More of your fantasies Greg.

Posted by: Robin Roberts at April 14, 2005 10:20 AM (xauGB)

9 A Finn, that's a new twist. To the Left, our GIs have always been just plain ol murderers. Now they're gutless murderers. But you support the troops. Which according to Collin simply means you want those gutless murderers to come home with their tails between their legs and the complete failure of their mission. Support the troops indeed. Just tell the truth. Stop lying to the American people about what you Leftists really believe. Not here on this blog. Here it doesn't count for shit what you believe, because we already know. I mean in public, on the airwaves. TELL THE TRUTH.

Posted by: Carlos at April 14, 2005 10:26 AM (8e/V4)

10 Civilian casualties are always higher than the official reports. Since enemies there don't wear uniforms they are hard to identify dead, after some gutless baby who just got into the army gets into a gunfight, goes into shock and starts shooting at everything with rags on its head.

Posted by: A Finn at April 14, 2005 10:37 AM (lGolT)

11 Carlos, Just giving you the heads up - A Finn is an 8th grade student. I don't believe the Americans soldiers tried to specifically murder Sgrena. I think we have a bunch of poorly organized scared kids with twitchy fingers. If it moves shoot it is the motis operandi. These "accidental" shootings probably occur on a daily basis.

Posted by: greg at April 14, 2005 10:41 AM (/+dAV)

12 Personally, I don't care shit about people getting killed or killing in some friggin desert thousands of miles away. I'd like to see more topics like "Cat hunting may be legalized in Wisconsin"

Posted by: A Finn at April 14, 2005 10:45 AM (lGolT)

13 Poorly organized scared kids with twitchy fingers... I thought those were the terrorists. Oh dear, I must be confused again! I guess all that training, command structures, and systematic deployment stuff the US does fooled me.

Posted by: Wine-aholic at April 14, 2005 10:45 AM (Wsn+K)

14 Dangit, I'm not an 8th grader... And whatever training noobs in combat get before the real action is blown away right that instant when they hear the first gun shot. People like gulf war veterans would be more trustworthy in that war, they shouldn't freak out every time they feel their life is threatened, unless they took in some nerve gas on their last visit.

Posted by: A Finn at April 14, 2005 10:50 AM (lGolT)

15 Why do you send young people to combat when you got jails full of Vietnam veterans? Send em there, no one needs them, they don't have their whole lives ahead of them, and they have combat exp, so if they kill civilians, you can just send em back to jail.

Posted by: A Finn at April 14, 2005 10:52 AM (lGolT)

16 So every soldier in Iraq is a noobie? Some have been there longer than any Gulf War vet had been in Iraq...

Posted by: Wine-aholic at April 14, 2005 10:53 AM (Wsn+K)

17 A Finn: my bad. Wineaholic: "Poorly organized" in that the Sgrena car had already cleared 2 US checkpoints on the way to the airport and the information apparently was not passed on. That's bad communication.

Posted by: greg at April 14, 2005 10:53 AM (/+dAV)

18 I am pretty sure Greg is really Ward Churchill. They speak the same moonbat jibberish.

Posted by: Filthy Allah at April 14, 2005 10:59 AM (yBHNA)

19 Would "bad communication" apply for not coordinating movements with the US military, or for failing to stop at a checkpoint when requested (in a country with suicide car bombers) too? Hell, I can "pass" multiple checkpoints onto and within my local Navy base, but I usually don't do it by just running by the guards at any point...

Posted by: Wine-aholic at April 14, 2005 11:02 AM (Wsn+K)

20 Thanks for the compliment Filthy. Where have you been man? All that foul talk on this blog didn't scare you away did it?

Posted by: Brad at April 14, 2005 11:06 AM (ywZa8)

22 Wino - there was no "running by the guards" thhe car was stopped some 45 meters in front of the check point. The proper course of action when the Sgrena car was stopped at the first check point would have been to provide the car an American escort for the jaunnt to the airport. But apparently the Americans are not that well organized.

30 "To those that are taking the word of Sgrena, what do you make of the fact that she kept changing her story?" -DG I don't necessarily take her word. When being fired at and going into the "am I going to die?" mode ones perceptions no doubt are blurred. But still, after thir car crossed the first checkpoint they should have been escorted to the airport by American forces or the Americans should have at least radioed ahead to inform those down line. The Italians are after all our 4th largest ally. Clearly sloppy work on the part of the Americans.

46 Hey, we didn't lose to the Soviets, we kept them out of our country in the 2 wars at the times of WW2. We didn't start em, the first one was just a Soviet invasion attempt and the other was getting stuck in a situation where we had to fight the Nazis or the Soviets, and since we went fighting the Soviets, other Allied declared war on us too, so we killed about a million Soviets, made peace and turned on the Germans, had to pay the rebuilding of both and just declared to be neutral in all future wars. A fin is something fish have on their backs, a Finn is a person living in Finland.

56 The toppling of SaddamÂ’s statue two years ago was a staged event, from start to finish, pulled off with tight camera angles (masking the paucity of the crowd) and the logistical and military support of American troops, who had just rolled into Baghdad. There are at most 200 Iraqis present who were obviously bussed in for the photographers. It is instructive to note that the same square was filled the other day by tens of thousands of Iraqis demanding that the U.S. leave Iraq forthwith. Compare juxtaposed pictures of the 2 events: http://rising-hegemon.blogspot.com/2005/04/two-years-later.html

67 The Finnish army back then: 45'000 men with weapons from home, 250'000 riflemen, some with horses, most of the infantry didn't even have uniforms, 13 tanks, 114 small planes, artillery rounds during the whole war matched what Russians used in a day The Russian army used in that war back then: 600'000 men with modern machine guns and uniforms, over 2000 tanks, over 1000 combat airplanes, huge amounts of artillery Winter War was a great example of Russias armys crappy tactics. They always attacked in huge groups, so all explosives did heavy damage. They were always disheartened when there were heavy casualties (meaning tens of thousands of Russians in one day), and if you took out the leading officers, they killed the ones that took their place and lost all sense of tactics. In the winter, Finns had a huge advantage. Skiing behind enemy lines through the high snow to sneak attack on their supply lines and reinforcements slowed down their advance and often created a "motti"-situation, where they were stuck in the mud or snow or in a mine field and got massacred by Finns attacking from both sides. Since they had no discipline after the officers were dead, they didn't take the heavy artillery and tanks out of gas with them, so retreating Russians pretty much provided all Blitzkrieg equipment for the Continuation War after Hitler started fighting the Soviet Union. The aftermath for Winter War was 1 dead Finn for every 10 dead Russians, and on the wounded it was 1:8.

86 No, it wasn't the same Russian Army that lost to Afganistan, since there were not many survivors from that war, and those who lived got a Russian medal of honor and retired due to seeing things more brutal and horrible any Russian can handle. The main motive for other countries to take over Finland has this far been getting the Finns into their army. Sweden kicked everyones asses when they had Finns to use (always at least 3/4 in every one of their armies), and when Russians bought our trust and the Swedes had to defend for themselves their empire collapsed instantly. Russians then used Finns to kick Turkey out of Europe and Brits out the Baltic sea (100% Finns against Turkey, 1/2 of the Russian navy kicking Brit ass), but ever since the commies took over Russia, Finland has been independent.

87 And most of the Somalians are the educated Christian ones they hate and kill back where they came from. (so the loin cloth types...) This far having foreigners has not had a negative effect on anything, since there are not many and they aren't lazy, stealing, whiteyhating ones like yours.

88 A FINN. I only hope finland can keep them from becoming lazy, stealing, whiteyhating ones like ours. My suggestion. Boycott Rap Music and Affirmative action. Our liberals made our blacks like they are. They were educated and conditioned to be like they are.

89 A FINN: It is good that your country is allowing Christian ones to immigrate. They will never forget the pain and suffering they went through under the yoke of Islam. We had a situation here comparable. The Cubans. The ones that immigrated to America passionately hate the commies. If they ever got their hands on a Collin Baber they would tear him apart right in the streets.

90 Greyrooster: "Referring to my liquid refreshments as firewater has racist connotations. Either be more careful or shall I send you an Application?" What's wrong saying "firewater"? Me likum firewater, too, Pale Face! "If you get bored on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, like good food, cold beer, comradship, a lack of mental competition and a warm cozy fire. Come on down. I'm sure I can get you a waiver. You know, that Catholic thing. See we can be liberals too." Well, liberal Catholics are always screaming for more diversity in the Church. (Hehe.)

91 A.Finn I'm glad you stood up for the Finn's I just found this commentary chain here and couldn't believe people didn't know how bad ass the Finnish army was and has been. which is amazing considering that they stay drunk for months on end But still they kick some serious ass. I hope you understand why we did go to Iraq, and I hope it ends like we want it too. It's unfortunate that changing governments always causes this much strife and loss of life but the situation that they were in ( though murderously stable) was bad and we owed them a blood debt from '91 when we let the shites get slaughtered for the sake of international stability. have fun in your military service how bad can it be LOL later

94 A FINN: We know so little about Finland. We know Sweden by pictures of their beautiful well endowed women. The only picture we have of a finnish women is that of your President. Do all Finnish women look like that?

Posted by: greyrooster at April 16, 2005 09:57 AM (sB5vg)

95 No. Absolutely not. Finnish women are the most beautiful in the world and the great thing is they don't need botox, saline and surgery to be so beautiful.

98 "But the Italian government is objecting to a U.S. wish to include a statement in the final report effectively absolving U.S. troops of any wrongdoing, Italian newspapers reported yesterday. The newspaper Corriere della Sera said the Italian government is asking that there is at least a recognition of some error that prompted the U.S. soldiers to open fire on the car. Another point of contention is that American authorities have refused to allow Italian investigators to examine the Toyota Corolla, the newspapers said. Both the Italian Foreign Ministry and the U.S. State Department said the investigation was ongoing. State Department spokesman Thomas Casey also denied reports that military investigators had reached any preliminary conclusions about the shooting." http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/world/ny-usiraq154218680apr15,0,3611504.story?coll=ny-leadworldnews-headlines

100 April 18, 2005 A Math Lesson The Killing of Nicola Calipari By ELI STEPHENS It was reported a few days ago: "U.S. soldiers reportedly have been cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting of an Italian journalist and an intelligence agent last month in Baghdad. "The car was about 130 yards from a checkpoint when the soldiers flashed their lights to get it to stop. They fired warning shots when the car was within 90 yards of the checkpoint, but at 65 yards, they used deadly force. Calipari was killed and Sgrena wounded." Sgrena has told CBS that the car she was in was going 30 mph. At 30 mph, a car is going 15 yards per second. So, according to the U.S. military, they fired warning shots within 2.7 seconds of flashing a warning light, and used "deadly force" 2.3 seconds after that. And actually, if the U.S. military story were true and the car were really travelling at "high speed", let's be generous and call that only 45 mph, that's 22 yards per second, meaning 1.8 seconds between warning lights and warning shots, and 1.6 seconds between warning shots and deadly shots. Now, there are variables, but typical perception plus reaction times are of the order of 1.5 seconds, that is, the time it takes to perceive a problem (such as a warning signal) and move your foot to the brake. That means that, according to the military's story, shots were fired at the vehicle less than 0.3 seconds after the vehicle could possibly have begun to slow down, even if they were paying close attention and they had immediately perceived that the alleged flashing light was meant as a signal to stop. However that 0.3 second is actually overstated, because the gunman (or gunmen), attempting to perceive if the car was responding to their warning signal to slow down, have perception and reaction times of their own, so in fact, they were pulling the trigger before they could possibly have perceived if the car were slowing down. And likewise, if the so-called warning shots were supposed to have served any purpose whatsoever, once again the "deadly force" shots were being squeezed off well before the warning shots could possibly have had any effect. And on that basis, the military has "exonerated itself" from any wrongdoing. Eli Stephens writes the Left I on the News

103 Re Collin Baber's post. Well, the math is right. I consider myself a no shit US supporter, being an Italian Air Force officer living in Italy. I posted my thoughts a few weeks ago, I never believed the attempted murder b.s. My idea: bad coordination on the part of our operative (Calipari) and probably an ill positioned checkpoint, giving US troops no choice but to shoot almost immediately at ANY non coordinated traffic. Insults and racial slurs accepted. Ciao Giulio
