Christian Egyptian Hostage Released in Iraq

Good news. A previously unidentified hostage in Iraq has been released. His name is Victor Tawfiq Girgis, and he is a Christian Copt from Egypt. The terrorists behind these acts seem to have found that their audience does not approve of the murder of hostages. Notice in the story, reprinted below, that our allies the Egyptians say he was delivering supplies to the US Army of occupation. Who needs enemies with friends like these? Egypt Today:

Victor Tawfiq Girgis, 45, the Egyptian truck driver kidnapped on June 2 near the Iraqi flashpoint city of Fallujah along with a Turkish colleague, after 15 days in captivity. Girgis, from the Upper Egyptian village of Abu Shusha, said the kidnappers did not mistreat him. They had threatened to execute both men unless the Egyptian and Turkish governments openly condemned Americas occupation of Iraq.

His wife, Amal Gadel-Rab, said Girgis, a father of four who also supports an extended family, left for Kuwait in October 2003. He borrowed $7,200 from friends to pay for his visa and living expenses.

With only low-paying menial work available in Kuwait, Girgis obtained an international driving license and was offered $1,000 to take a truck of food to the US Army of occupation in Iraq. It was his first and last trip.

Girgis is now safely back in Egypt. His kidnappers offered no explanation for his release, but gave the Copt a Quran and a doll for his daughter.

My father was held hostage by Muslim extremists in Iraq for 3 months and all I got was this lousy doll.

1 "audience does not approve of the murder of hostages." Well, at least the Arab ones, anyway! p.s., nice new site, Rusty (though I still like the WWII poster you had on the old one) Also, I have trouble opening your archives, but that may be a problem with my security settings, and the fact that I'm a dial-up WIN98 dinasaur.
