We cultural conservative types take a lot of heat for being uptight. My buddy Dawn Eden, for example, got smeared (along with religous conservatives in general) by the enlightened progressives at Pandagon as a sex-hater; and this bit of uninformed, deceptive bile from the Nation's Katha Pollitt says we just hate women:

Yes, grown-up people actually believe that stuff.

So we're condescending? The funny thing is how often leftists like Pollitt turn out to be exactly the sort of shrill, uptight moral scolds that they make us out to be. Exhibit A is the recent Larry Summers fiasco at Harvard, where a university president was nearly fired for suggesting a controversial hypothesis about the differences in men and women, and only escaped after a 50 million dollar ransom to the aggrieved constituency. Academic freedom is alive and well there at Cambridge Community College, where academics are free to say exactly what the leftist and feminist pressure groups allow them to say.

Exhibit B just arrives from Australia. Douglas Wood, in a press conference about his ordeal as a captive of Iraqi insurgents until he was freed, referred to his barbaric captors as "assholes". Aussie blogger Tim Blair tells us that didn't sit too well with Andrew Jaspan, editor of a Melbourne paper called the Age, who said:

"I was, I have to say, shocked by Douglas WoodÂ’s use of the a---hole word, if I can put it like that, which I just thought was coarse and very ill-thought through and I think demeans the man and is one of the reasons why people are slightly sceptical of his motives and everything else.

"The issue really is largely, speaking as I understand it, he was treated well there. He says he was fed every day, and as such to turn around and use that kind of language I think is just insensitive."

Insensitive? Insensitive? You mincing, useless Ayyyy-hole! He was fed well! Well, shut your sensitive mouths about Guantanamo Bay by all means, for those poor lost lambs are fed better than our own troops!

Criticize the coarse language of a rock star, a rapper, or a comedian and you're a philistine and a prude. But call those terrorists (who just kidnapped you and held you for months and forced you at gunpoint into making propaganda films for their murderous nihilistic cause) "assholes"* and you're coarse and insensitive.

There is a time and place for foul language. Primetime TV isn't it, and I'm insulted when Janet Jackson thinks she can just flap her Bedazzler'ed mammary at me when I'm trying to watch a football game, or some cosmically insignificant Cristal-addled rock star decides to drop the ol' f-bomb in an awards show. But Mr. Wood, on the other hand, has earned full leave to call those murdering bastards whatever he wants, whenever he wants. (His fellow kidnap victim, a Swede, has gone even further in expressing his displeasure and offered a $50,000 reward for the death of the kidnappers.)

There's a great scene in Aliens where the Marines are defending themselves deep inside a base overrun by unseen, creeping, face-sucking beasts, and orders come down from above that due to the risk of accidentally setting off the base's reactor, they can't fire their weapons.

"What are we supposed to use?" one Marine pipes up. "Harsh language?"

If the candyass bluenose sensitivity police like Jaspan have their way, then no. Not even that.

*Counting the number of hyphens--or are those dashes, Jeff?-- in Jaspan's quote, it is possible that Wood actually said "arsehole" instead of the more American "asshole". Both terms refer to the type of posterior orifice in which Mr. Jaspan's head is irretrievably impacted in ostrichlike oblivion.

2 after you liberate a country, you have to stick around and help rebuild and bring order back into the civilians daily lives....its like going to a party at youre friends house, you go in and make a huge mess and than cut and run and leave it for youre friends to clean up....not quite the same but you get my drift.....yes, wars make a mess, but after its over, you help rebuild, dont just pull out and leave the citizens to try and get every thing in order...and in Iraq, there are terrorists and quite a few of Saddams buddies still running around who would just take over the goverment after the US and coalition troops are gone and youre right back were you started from....a repressive regime as bad if not worse than when Saddam and his evil sons were in charge....imagine if the Allies had just left Germany after WWII was over...yea, Hitler was dead, but many of his followers were still on the run, they would have probally just put themselves back in power as there wouldnt have been any one there to keep them out...its just plain old common sense

6 This takes me back to the presidential debates last fall. President Bush was talking about the human sacrifice that the Iraqis were making. To me, Kerry dismissed the idea of this sacrifice as insignificant and almost laughed about it. No one in these two families are laughing Mr. Kerry. Here are two more ordinary men whose motivation was probably first and foremost to support their families. No doubt they knew the risk they were taking. I’m sure they were encouraged by the fact that by taking these jobs, they were helping bring Iraq back to a normal state where families would be safe to walk the streets. It’s too bad their killers will be encouraged to continue these senseless murders by favorable comments from movie studios, celebrities, US news media and even members of Congress and the Senate. I think Syria needs to be held responsible for the non-Iraqis who are doing most of this barbaric killing. Next time a car bomb goes off in Iraq, a cruse missile should be launched at a military target in Syria. This line in the sand between Iraq and Syria stinks like the Yalu River and the DMZ. Perhaps the Syrians can be coerced into policing the boarder and not being partners in this crime. Our only options are not limited to leaving in a year or Iraq-ization (made up word). We could try to win this war decisively. I drove past a “Support the troops, Bring them home rally today in Lake Forest Park (just N of Seattle). All peace now type people, one of whom is a member of my Parish. Do they really want us to just hand over these brave people to this gang of thugs? What is wrong with Victory and Freedom and Justice for all?

BTW, I saw LBJ at the Boy Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge PA. My Dad was stationed at an Army hospital in Phoenixville Pa. I was too young to be a Boy Scout. I remember going with my dad who was a Major and an ENT surgeon. 28 You know what really cracks me up...we are all arguing about something which most of us have not seen. We are basing our facts upon what other people report or write. So since you'll never find unbiased broadcasting or newspapers/magazines, our "reality" about our leaders and the war are fundamentally skewed or flawed. How many of us know Bush? I guess there are some numbers which are hard to disprove, like the dead soldier count and dead Iraqi civilian count, which pretty much sinks the whole "liberation" claim. Maybe if our economy wasn't in a debt bubble we could take a swipe from our credit cards and direct it to where the attackers are from? Then there's the whole WMD...sorry guys, but they didn't find squat and there are plenty military reports to back that up. The only weapons found were the ones WE sold Saddam so he could butt-fuck Iran. No nukes, no "mushroom clouds"...so now that Bush has failed to find WMD, it's all about "liberating" Iraq and wholesome democracy (anarchy) being spread. What a fucking crock of shit. Yeah, we can't pull out of there. If we did it would be insane...there are no easy solutions to this mess. I will say this though: our current administration is a bunch of self-serving, dishonest, moralistic hypocrites who deserve prison time for what they have done and how they have lied to us all. The polls are showing that Americans are catching on and can't be duped for 8 years. What I find strange in the anti war argument is the absense of chronology about when Islamic terrorism began and the lack of recognition for needed foreign policy change arising from the collapse of Communism, and hence the ability to abandon real politik diplomacy. Now policy can pursue freedom and democracy for the first time in a century or more because the US is the only superpower. But this window may extend only another 5 -10 years until Chindia assumes much greater power. 9 -11 was transforming and prompted the preemptive/preventive response that bothers many. To expect support from other countries which didn't experience a 9- 11 is delusionary especially given the weak economic and moral state of Europe along with its anti- Americanism. Not to mention the UN where anti- democratic members outnumber democracies. I'll ask the Bush haters for their solution to the terrorism problem - but don't argue that its the fault of the West. Note that most major countries - ex the US- were invaded at some point but the emerged as sovereign nations many with a civil society. The Palestinians are a counterpoint: they have received enough aid to create a prosperous state in my opinion but instead they chose victimhood and corruption - so blame the West? Finally will the Bush haters elect to await the next terror attack or do they have a plan for protection ?

Yesterday was American hostage Roy Hallums' 57th birthday. A candlelight vigil was held in his honor in Huntington Beach, CA yesterday. Today, we learn that he is definitely still alive.

Do not give up hope. Remember, some of the hostages in Lebanon were held for years. The Hallums' familye-mailed me expressing their thanks to our Jawa Report readers for all your support. Keep the prayers and good vibes flowing people! Xinhua:

This is VERY good news. Not only for the family of Robert Tarangoy, but because Tarangoy was taken hostage along with Roy Hallums. As you know, I've developed something of a relationship with the Hallums family. Keep Roy in your prayers, there is still hope. Robert Tarongoy, a Filipino citizen taken hostage in Iraq almost eight months ago, has been freed, Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Wednesday.

In a phone interview with Philippines' GMA television station, an emotional Tarongoy thanked Arroyo, The Associated Press reported. "She did not neglect me," he said, also thanking diplomats who helped win his freedom.

Asked how he was treated by his captors, Tarongoy said, his voice cracking: "You know how long I was kept there. It was difficult," AP reported.

In a written statement announcing his release, Arroyo said: "Robert is now safe in the hands of the Iraq hostage crisis team led by [Foreign] Undersecretary Rafael Seguis who is making the necessary arrangements to bring him back to the Philippines."....

The AP also reported that Seguis told GMA that no ransom was paid and several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Jordan -- along with Muslim clerics -- helped secure Tarongoy's release.

Seguis said Tarongoy could be home as early as Thursday, according to the AP.

Tarongoy's wife -- in the Filipino city of Davao -- told AP her husband's release coincided with their third wedding anniversary.

"It's a very wonderful gift for both of us," she said. "I'm very happy."

The government of the Philippines secured the release of one of its nationals held hostage in Iraq after agreeing to set demands, the previously unknown armed group which claimed to have held him said, as reported b, Al-Jazeera television reported.

The Doha-based channel broadcast a videotape showing the hostage held by two armed men, reading what they claimed to be a statement by the Philippine foreign ministry, saying it has banned its nationals from travelling to Iraq and adopted a new law to punish those who disobeyed the order.

UPDATE 6/21/05Yesterday we reported that Bilprasad "Binkumar" Gurung was Japanese. The name did not sound Japanese, but all media reports were that the victim was from Japan. Today, thanks to Chad Evenas for e-mailing me the story, we learn that Bilprasad "Binkumar" Gurung was probably from Nepal.

The Army of Ansar al-Sunna murdered 12 Nepalese civilians in August of last year. If you can stomach scrolling passed the images from the snuff-murder video made by the jihadis, take a minute to check out all the comments from Nepalese readers. The Nepalese may be Buddhist, but they certainly are not pacifists.

Japan said Tuesday that a man Islamic extremists in Iraq said they had killed in an ambush on a convoy serving US-led forces was not Japanese, as stated by the militants.

“The name of the individual is clearly not Japanese. We believe the person was from another country,” said an official with the foreign ministry’s terrorism prevention division....

Gurung is a common name in Nepal.

The only group of terrorists worse than Abu Musab al Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq are The Army of Ansar al Sunnah. These are some evil sadistic dudes. While they don't get as much press as Zarqawi's group (and they actually are loosely linked with Zarqawi) they do just as much damage and specialize in murdering Kurds and Turkish civilians. They announced today that they murdered a Japanese man Bilprasad "Binkumar" Gurung.

This is the same group that murdered Japanese hostage Akihiko Saito. It was Zarqawi who personally beheaded Japanese hostage Shosei Koda.

Ansar al-Sunnah claims responsibility for the murder of Bilprasad (alias Binkumar) Gurung, a Japanese contractor for the America-Iraqi Solutions Group, and six of his guards who worked for the same corporation. The ambush of this convoy was executed yesterday, as the group was coming out of al-Walid Base near Ramadi, west of Baghdad.

According to the message, Gurung and his bodyguards were ambushed and the ensuing battle “killed them all, and also this dirty Westerner.” Two of the guards were indicated to have been captured and an “investigation” divulged that Gurung and the guards were on a “mission to distribute the non-believers’ guards (National Guards) salaries.” [SITE has more for subscribers]

Chijan said the badly decomposed bodies of another seven men, including one Iraqi and six believed to be "Asians," were brought to the hospital after being killed in a convoy ambush several days ago. Most had been shot in the face.

The slain Iraqi was identified as Ahmed Adnan, said his cousin, Hussein Ali.

Ali told the AP his cousin worked for the U.S.-owned American-Iraqi Solutions Group, a large company dealing in Iraqi reconstruction projects, with its headquarters in Carson City, Nev.

The company later sent the AP a statement saying 11 of its employees were killed Sunday when one of its five-vehicle supply convoys was ambushed east of Ramadi, 110 kilometres west of Baghdad, by up to 20 heavily armed bandits firing from an overpass.

In the Internet claim, the militant group Ansar al-Sunnah Army said its fighters attacked a convoy leaving a base near the town of Ramadi, killing the seven men and capturing two other Iraqi guards. The statement did not say when the attack took place.

The claim could not be confirmed. The statement, posted on a web forum often used by Ansar al-Sunnah and other militant groups, included pictures of the contractor's identification cards.

The cards identified him as Binkumar Gurung, working for the American-Iraq Solution Group, contracted by the Pentagon. The cards included a licence to carry weapons.

The statement said the contractor was Japanese, but no passport was included and his picture and name appeared to be South Asian. One of the cards also gave his name as "Gurung Bilprasad, alias Binkumar."

Two important updates to our Iraq hostage watch. First, several people made me aware some time ago that hostage William Bradley's body was discovered earlier in the year. Boston.com:

The body of a civilian truck driver missing since April in Iraq has been found near the place where his convoy was ambushed nine months ago.

William Bradley, 50, lived in Chesterfield before going to Iraq nearly a year ago to drive trucks for Texas-based Halliburton Co., which on Thursday announced the discovery of his remains.

The former Marine was in a fuel truck convoy that was ambushed near Baghdad on April 9.

Second, a little noticed blurb from Douglas Wood. It seems that Mr. Wood barely escaped death but that two other hostages being held in the same room were not so lucky. The Sunday Mail:

DOUGLAS Wood has revealed he feared he was next to die after two fellow hostages were executed by his kidnappers in Iraq.

From what I have been able to deduce from published reports, the two hostages would have been murdered sometime between May 6th and May 9th. Yet no hostage murder videos or statements appeared during this time frame.

Call former hostage Douglas Wood the 'anti-Sgrena'. Unlike that Communist serial liar and terror supporter who decided on her own it would be a good idea to shoot a video and beg the Italian people to pressure the Berlusconi government to withdraw troops from Iraq, Douglas Wood only made similar pleas because an AK-47 was pointed at his head.

Yesterday, in a brief interview with the press, Wood apologized to President Bush, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Prime Minister Howard. He also reiterated his support for the no negotiations with terrorists policy of the Allied governments. Melbourne Herald Sun:

"Frankly I'd like to apologize to both President (George W.) Bush and Prime Minister (John) Howard for the things I said under duress," said Mr Wood "I actually believe that I am proof positive that the current policy of training the Iraqi army ... works because it was Iraqis that got me out," he added.

In the original hostage video, which I transcribed here, Wood can be heard saying:

President Bush, Prime Minister Howard, Governor Schwarzenegger, family, friends, please help take the American troops, the Australian troops, the British troops out of here and let Iraq look out for itself.

"I didn't know whether it was al-Qaida or who it was," he said. "My head is intact, so it wasn't al-Qaida."

Douglas Wood, an Alamo, California, resident with Australian citizenship, has been rescued by Iraqi forces backed by U.S. troops from his terrorist captors.

AUSTRALIAN hostage Douglas Wood is well and undergoing medical checks following his rescue more than six weeks after being kidnapped in Iraq.

The 63-year-old engineer, with numerous health problems, was in good health in Baghdad tonight, and he was under the protection of an Australian taskforce sent to Iraq to negotiate his release, Prime Minister John Howard told Parliament.
Mr Wood was freed this afternoon by Iraqi and US troops in Baghdad, Mr Howard said.

"I am delighted to inform the house that the Australian hostage in Iraq Mr Douglas Wood is safe from his captors," he said to cheers in Parliament.

"Mr Wood was recovered a short while ago in Baghdad in a military operation that I'm told was conducted by Iraqi forces."

Mr Wood was well and was undergoing medical checks while in the care of the Australian emergency response team, Mr Howard said.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer meanwhile said Mr Wood was in good shape, if mentally exhausted.

He said he had called the Wood family with the good news at 6pm.

A family spokesman said: "They are elated.

"They haven't spoken to him yet but I understand that all of the family know in all parts of the world."

Mr Wood, a US-based Australian with an American wife, Yvonne, and a daughter, Christina, has brothers living in Australia

Seventeen days later Iraq security forces stumbled by chance on the house where he was being held during an early-morning search in a northern suburb of Baghdad.

In an operation codenamed Lightning and supported by US advisers, the Iraqis were conducting "snap, cordon and search" raids from house to house.

"They just happened to get lucky," a coalition defence source in Iraq said last night. Australian commanders, who had no advance knowledge of the operation, were caught by surprise.

I just got an e-mail from a friend if Roy's, Butch Conner, letting me know that a candlelight vigil will be held for American hostage in Iraq, Roy Hallums. Roy's daughter Carrie says, "It will probably be held in the Huntington Beach area. Please join us on this evening so we can show our support for my Dad and to let him know that we care! June 23rd is my Dad's Birthday, which is why we chose that day. He will be 57 years old."

We'll announce further details later or check Carrie's website here. If you're in the Orange County, CA, area it would be nice if you could show your support.

Very good news to hear the left-wing French journalist Florence Aubenas has been set free from her hostage ordeal. France, for what it's worth, denies paying a ransom for the journalist.

Why is it that the terrorists continually target left-wing journalists? Is it a) because the vast majority of journalists are leftists and therefore chances are if you take a journalist hostage he'll more than likely be a left-winger? Or is it b) because left-wing journalists are stupid enough to believe their own propaganda about the so-called 'insurgency', thinking that the 'freedom fighters' are really no threat until one day they find themselves hostage?

I'm leaning towards b myself, but there is a good arguement to be made for a.

Our man on the streets in Romania, Adi, points out one of the most fascinating aspects of Florence Aubenas release is that she was held captive for almost two months with three Romanian journalists who were also being held hostage. As you may recall, an American citizen has been formally accused by the Romanian government of setting up the kidnapping of the three Romanians. If the four were held together by the same group of terrorists, why was the French hostage not released until now?

Notice from the article below that the left-leaning French Liberation, for whom Aubenas worked, can't find anything bad to say about the men who held their employee hostage for close to half a year. I can understand how a hostage might develop Stockholm syndrome, but not the employer of a hostage. The Jawa Report is suddenty getting a number of hits for people looking for news about American hostage in Iraq, Jeffrey Ake. Our earlier reports about Jeffrey Ake are here (news of the abduction along with silence from the State Department) and here (video released). As with the other hostages being held in Iraq, such as Roy Hallums, we pray that Mr. Ake is alright and that his captors meet a swift and gruesome end at the hands of a very pissed off Marine.

A few days ago a rumor began to circulate that Jeffrey Ake had been released and was in Iraq. Perhaps similar rumors are circulating today? Let's hope this time the rumor turns out to be true. Any one with news about the status of Jeffrey Ake is urged to e-mail me.

For those of you paying really close attention you will know this is last week's news. But I didn't get the video until today, so I thought I'd pass it along to those that hadn't heard about it. A group calling itself the Badr Brigade released this video last week of a 'CIA agent' they had 'captured' in Malta. But this one was allegedly debunked by OSINT and SITE as really another case of a doll being taken hostage. Chad also reported the erroneous story here.

Here is the problem with the debunking: a) Polish Expert of OSINT told me in an e-mail that he hadn't seen the video. His report was just a link to an AKI story that made the claim it was a hoax. The AKI story seems to have just been a report on what SITE had written. Now, SITE has changed their entry deleting the part that this was a doll. b) the 'CIA agent' moves in the video!! Now, I understand special effects, but how can this be a doll? Watch the video yourself. I asked Vlad of Infovlad to find it for me and he did. He has the video here for your downloading pleasure. I have still images from the video below and right.

This might very well be a hoax, but it is definitely not a doll as earlier reports indicated.

What do we know about the Badr Brigades? Not much. There is a group in Iraq that calls itself the Badr brigades, but which is more of an armed militia front for the Shia Islamist party. The group has been blamed for the murder of several Sunni clerics. It is not likely that the group who claims they are holding the 'CIA agent' are related to the group in Iraq given the close alliance that has formed between the ruling Shias and the US.

The name of the group, though, suggests Shia militism with ties to Iran. If that is the case, then big worries are headed for Europe. The largest source of militancy Europe has had with its Muslim minorities has been with Salaafist Sunni groups with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, Wahabbi mosques, or even al Qaeda.

militant Islamist Group has claimed that it has kidnapped an American CIA secret agent carrying a Maltese passport, adnki.com reports.

Maltese authorities and police immediately carried out investigations about the hostage named Hajya Khalil. The police confirmed that the name was not found registered on Maltese passport and identity card lists. Several international news agencies are reporting that the man is not a Maltese citizen, as it was being stated.

According to the group which calls itself Badr Brigades, the hostage is suspected to have passed secret information to ‘the enemy’ regarding Islamist militant movements in Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Badr Brigades also stated that the man was arrested in a European country and will be killed without negotiations.
