(Camp Justice, Iraq) A dozen or more dead or wounded are being reported after a prisoner grabbed a rifle from an Iraqi policeman and opened fire. Details are confused.
Iraqi police have shot dead several prisoners in a shoot-out at a Baghdad military base after one prisoner grabbed a weapon from a guard and opened fire, Interior Ministry officials and police sources said.
Up to six guards were killed, one police source said, before security forces began firing into the unarmed prisoners.
There was confusion over casualty figures.
Another police source and an Interior Ministry official initially said more than 20 prisoners were killed but a second official insisted there were 15 casualties in all, some only wounded, and that these included one dead guard and one wounded officer.
The prisoners were on a morning recreation break at al Adala base - also called Camp Justice - in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Kadhimiya. Three prisoners are believed to have escaped. The al Adala prison
suspects accused of major crimes, including terrorism.

I'd be willing to bet complacency on the part of the officer whose gun was taken is mostly to blame. It's all too easy to stop concentrating on your surroundings when day after day your job is to keeping looking at prisoners.

No need for all that Graeme. The simple fact is that arabs are generally incapable of being professionally trained. Some of them make adequate soldiers, and a very select few make good leaders, but as a race, they are completely inept at warfare and all its attendant professional duties. They can do a helluva job raping, pillaging, and murdering innocent people though, if that counts for anything. Arabs' rightful place in the human family is as the crazy cousin who lives in a trailer park, beats his wife, molests his kids, and steals his neighbors' stuff to sell for meth. I hope the democracy experiment works out, but these stone-age savages have a hard time getting their heads around advanced concepts such as sanitary toilets and things like that, so democracy is quite a stretch.
