IAEA Refers Iran To Security Council
From the
Associated Press:
VIENNA, Austria - The U.N. nuclear watchdog Saturday reported Iran to the U.N. Security Council in a resolution expressing concern that Tehran's nuclear program may not be "exclusively for peaceful purposes." Iran retaliated immediately, saying it would resume uranium enrichment at its main plant instead of in Russia.
The landmark decision by the International Atomic Energy Agency's 35-nation board sets the stage for future action by the top U.N. body, which has the authority to impose economic and political sanctions.
Still, any such moves were weeks if not months away. Two permanent council members, Russia and China, agreed to referral only on condition the council take no action before March.
No doubt a stern letter will be prepared to buy time until UN
graft sanctions can be arranged.

I was reading a piece on what's called iranian oil "Bourse". Anyone knowledgeable about it? Sounds like the iranians are planning on setting up a system through which nations can buy and sell oil for euros, rather than the long-agreed-upon dollar. If that were to happen, nations wouldn't need to hold tons of dollars with which to buy oil.. and hence, the US dollar wouldn't be worth much. What's up with this and is it related or unrelated to iran's nuke saber-rattling?

Talk - just talk. Been around now for nearly 30 years - the "Euro" is just the newest wrinkle. If the Iranian leadership were actually serious - it would only reinforce their perceived economic incompetence. Yes - it is related.

Iran is violating UN rules - UN regulations - UN treaties.
I don't want to be in the position of backing up/enforcing the UN's will. Their credibility, or whats left of it is at stake, so let them deal with it - or fall with it.
Iran is gonna have nuclear energy - I can live with that. Nuclear weapons? Yet to be known - and there is still a good time element here.
We have plenty of options (as we see fit according to our needs!) - the UN doesn't. We may have a mini regional cold war on our hands - but we are holding all the aces and heavy hardware in dealing with that game.
We don't have to fight them now just to make the UN look. good

Who do we think the UN will turn to to enforce their "ultimatums"? They think the US military are they're personal mercenaries waiting at their beck and call. I say tell 'em to call France and Germany and if they need us to cover their backs, well then ... we'll think it over.
