It's Not Fair to Pick on Men Named Mohammed!

So a dude named Mohammed is pissed because it's taking his Visa a little longer to process than Brits with names like "Cecille" & "Roderick"? Fascists. People with the name Mohammed are no more likely to commit acts of terrorism than any one else, right?

Manchester Evening News:

A YOUNG Muslim fears his dream trip to America is threatened after US officials forced him to undergo extra security checks - because his name includes "Mohammed".
Umar Khan, 22, a student from Didsbury, was made to fork out Ã‚Â£50 more than everyone else to have prints taken of all his fingers and checked with a terrorist database in Washington.
Umar - whose full name is Mohammed Umar Haleem Khan - is still waiting to hear if he will get his visa and fears he may now have to cancel his trip to work at a Camp America project in Pennsylvania....
"I feel completely discriminated against," Umar said. "I was supposed to be going on June 20 but if I don't get the visa soon I will have to do something else."

I'd give a long lecture about how there have been far more Christian terrorists than Muslim ones (you just choose not to label Christians who have bombed places and killed people as terrorists), how Islam teaches peace, etc., but I doubt it would have any effect. If the facts don't fit your beliefs, people like you will just throw out the facts. George W. Bush has repeatedly demonstrated this. By the way, I'm not Muslim. Mexicans Declare 'Nothing Gringo Day'

May 1st has been dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants" for the U.S. and, presumably, many illegal aliens will stay home from work to show the American public that trespassers from Mexico are indispensable. To coincide with the illegals playing hooky in the U.S., Mexican unions, political groups, media and government offices have called for a boycott of all American companies in Mexico.

Dubbed "Nothing Gringo Day," the intent is to discourage all Mexicans from conducting business with any American company on May 1st, ostensibly to harm sales and demonstrate the influence of a cross-border Mexican power-lobby. Paradoxically, the campaign to hurt American businesses south of the border targets the illegal aliens' strongest supporters for guest-worker and legalization initiatives. Of course, this is consistent with the ridiculousness of demonstrating for U.S. citizenship while carrying Mexican flags. Leave it to the Mexicans to be their own enemy.

For news junkies, May 1st will likely be very entertaining. From a personal perspective, if employees of my business took a unauthorized day off from work to demonstrate their political activism, they would likely be fired.

9 What really pisses me off the most about this is how these parasites are creating a social divide in this country nad poisoning the melting pot, intentionally in my opinion, and screwing it up for the ones who only want to make a better life for themselves and their families. I have known many Latino immigrants and guest workers, and most of them have been damn fine people, not like this scum that wants nothing but to take what someone else has earned. 13 Yes, all Americans should refuse to allow Mexicans at Hospital Emergency Rooms, grocery stores, government offices, schools, or any other place they gather and use up free services. I, for one, am tired of their crap, and while I USED to feel sorry for them, my sympathy is now turning to anger. I want something done with these illegals, and it is immediate deportment. And I want the border secured, even if we have to call out the National Guard. And get rough with those who try to cross illegally, not legal immigrants, who are welcome. 20 I have a simple solution for the whole illegal immigration thing, so now I will present my arguments and state my case. Even with millions of illegals in the country, unemployment is at one of the lowest levels since World War II, so obviously, they aren't ruining the economy. Quite the opposite, they seem to be stimulating the economy in certain sectors by providing reliable, affordable labor, both skilled and unskilled, and boosting real estate markets by renting down-market properties, thus providing a dual benefit to the economy. We need them, but we need to know who they are, where they are, and how many of them there are; ergo, we need a better guest worker program which addresses our economic and security needs simultaneously. Because they are illegals, they are vulnerable to expolitation by unscrupulous employers and landlords, the coyote smugglers, and every other sort of scumbag, such as democrats. They also risk their lives every time they cross the border. From a human rights standpoint, this is unacceptable regardless of the politics involved. They're here, and we need them as much as they need us, so for the sake of humanity if nothing else, we should have a guest worker program which takes all the scumbags, including democrats, out of the equation. I propose this; a program which allows people who are native born to any nation to our South to go the the US consulate or embassy, or a border station, present themselves for fingerprints, retinal scans, dental X-rays, and DNA samples, give them a smart card identifying them as a guest worker, and let them come work without having to risk their lives or pay thousands to smugglers. This program would also take literally millions of smugglers' mules out of the system, because if they're able to pass back and forth legally, they won't be so inclined to break the law, knowing they will lose their guest worker status if they do. Time spent in the US under this program should not count toward citizenship, but could be used as evidence of good conduct when applying for citizenship; a probationary period of sorts. Once this system is in place, it will be easier to seperate the desirable workers from the undesirable criminal element, and more vigorously prosecute anyone found in the US illegally. Fines for citizens hiring illegals could be made so high that financial ruin would be the result, and lifetime prison sentences without the possibility of parole for smugglers of humans and drugs would almost immediately break smuggling rings and stop repeat offenders. The political element would be defused, and those who would be here legally could earn better wages and pay for their own medical care rather than relying on emergency rooms because they only make crap wages. We need them, and they need us. What's more, we're neighbors, and should not behave as enemies just because our politicians are idiots.

23 It sounds like a reasonable plan IM, but will it be practical? There are several issues that would still need to be addressed. Firstly, you mentioned that this plan will be for any nation south of the US. There are alot of people south of the US in Central and South America alone, not to mention the caribbean. It's possible that the bureaucratic system could become bogged down to the point where it becomes easier and faster to once again to sneak across the border. Secondly, once all these guest workers enter the US, many will find jobs, but many will not. Who will then support these people? A condition for continued participation in the guest worker program might be proof of employment with a period of no longer than four months between jobs. Thirdly, what will be the impact on the countries as the skilled workers in the high demand professions (engineering, research, IT, financial) start heading to the US to find better jobs? Conditions will become worse and the US may find that in exchange for an abundant immigrant workforce it will have to support to a greater extent the populations that stay behind in their home countries. To solve the problem of illegal immigration will unfortunately call for some unneighbourly behaviour.

30 Maxie, I agree with you on many levels, but I don't see any empirical evidence that they're stimulating any particular sector of the economy. Yes, we should have had a guest worker program decades ago, but in the eighties all they wanted to do was grant illegals amnesty and sweep the real problems under the rug. Now they want to do it again. They're focusing on who's here already and how many more to allow instead of controlling the border. We can't go through this every twenty years. The Democrats are too busy trying to make the Republicans look bad to really do anything and the Republicans are too busy kow-towing to businesses who like the cheap labor. The Mexican government has to do something too. A guest worker program has to have a limit or we'll have a stampede over the border because Mexico has no incentive, still, to make any overtures toward a solution. And when that limit is reached annually, if we don't have our borders under control, we're back to square one. Without a limit, too, the whole idea of "Buy American" is further eroded because even more American dollars aren't recycled back into our economy as much of their paycheck gets sent back to Mexico; the guest worker program is for the workers, not their entire families. The only one's who'll make out great is the government with the tax dollars. I have nothing against Mexicans. I lived in Texas on and off for years and met and grew fond of many of them. As a whole they're fine people, but we have to be practical.

36 Wow, where do I begin? First of all, the idea of illegal immigrants staging marches and boycotts against the country that they invited themselves into is offensive to me as an American. How odd that I, a lifetime liberal, find myself agreeing with George F. Will of all people, when he says that illegal immigrants have assimilated enough to have an Â“entitlementÂ” mentality regarding their demands. How dare they claim to have Â“rightsÂ” under the very laws that they snubbed when they came here illegally? Then thereÂ’s the criminal element. IÂ’ve read all the previous posts, and the only mention I saw was by Victory for the USA. There is indeed a huge gang problem in most large cities; where I live in the MD/DC/VA area, we have an infestation of the Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, gang. They are Salvadoran immigrants who are particularly vicious in their attacks (their weapon of choice is the machete), and they donÂ’t take deportation seriouslyÂ—they lie that theyÂ’re from Mexico and just come right back over the border. ThereÂ’s a case being prosecuted in MD right now that the Feds took over to make sure these guys got put away for real: four MS-13 members robbed a brothel within walking distance of where I grew up; they attempted to rape the female police officer who busted up the robbery, and it took a SWAT team to make the arrests. I donÂ’t know about everyone else, but I was hoping to die of old age in my home country without being forced to learn a foreign language (in addition to the one I learned in school). If the immigrants who do want to stay here peacefully would just freakinÂ’ melt already, instead of trying to have it both ways, it would go a long way towards making everyday Americans (as opposed to the bloodsucking businesses that enslave them) feel more comfortable. HereÂ’s another radical idea: how about taxing the hell out of all the millions of dollars being sent out of this country as a way to recoup some of the payroll taxes that arenÂ’t being collected? I live in South Florida, we have experienced the so-called open border syndrome (wet-foot,dry-foot policies)it has been no picnic, and the cost to our cities is incalcuable. 41 Try living in my town...pickup the newspaper while your at it. Every police record, every drive by shooting involves the last name of Hernandez, Perez, Garcia and the list goes on. There was even an 18 yr old girl the other day (Mexican of course) that gave birth in the back yard of her apartment complex and then threw the baby in the dumpster. Now the tax paying people are paying for a funeral and headstone. I saw a bumper sticker the other day on a truck...It said "Make welfare as hard to get as a building permit" Thought that was rather amusing. These people have already taken over our country. We are building low income housing for them as fast as we can put them up. In our great town they are the only ones that own their own businesses anymore. You can't even buy a good paying city, state or government job here that pays well.....unless of course you are bilingual. Should we as Americans go back to night school and learn Spanish, just to get a good paying job with benefits? In our own country? Wake up America! They are already here.....we are not going to send them home. They are now well established. There is no American dream anymore for any of us. It is theirs. What it boils down to is the politicians are lining their pockets as well as big business. They want them here. Therefore they will stay.

Oh the Irony

After seeing this photo while reading Michelle MalkinÂ’s blog the other day I just could not help but giggle a bit today when I read this.

Clarification: Right now, unlawful entry is a civil violation -- technically not a crime; a majority of House Republicans wanted to elevate the violation to a misdemeanor; but Democrats proposed making it a felony -- to undermine the entire bill by making it appear too harsh, according its sponsor, Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.).
(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) issued a joint statement on Tuesday making it clear that it was Democrats who insisted on making unlawful presence in the United States a felony rather than a misdemeanor.
"In December, the House of Representatives passed a strong border security bill aimed at securing our borders and preventing illegal immigration," the statement said.
"However, on December 16, 2005, there were 191 House Democrats who voted to oppose House Republican efforts to reduce the crime of unlawful presence in the United States from a felony to a misdemeanor. Instead, they voted to make felons out of all of those who remain in our country illegally. (Some conservative Republicans also favored making unlawful presence a felony.)
"While we are disappointed with the House Democrat's lack of compassion and the continued efforts by Senator Reid to block action on immigration legislation so that Congress can proceed to conference, it remains our intent to produce a strong border security bill that will not make unlawful presence in the United States a felony."

Yes vote Democrat! It is the party of stab you in the back traitors these days. Pretty neat how the Democrats painted the Republicans and the right as the enemy of immigrants, while at the same time screwing immigrants over.

1 It would have been smart politics for the Republicans to stay quiet on the issue giving the impression that they are intractable and therefore demoralizing those organizing the AMNESTY RALLIES. If they wanted to drop the felony provision they should have waited until a later time so that it didn't appear they were buckling under intense pressure. However, the Republican leadership has never been noted for intellect so they are going the impression that the AMNESTY RALLIES effected change.

This is just their way of getting back at the Republicans for forcing a vote on the draft legislation Charley Rangel sponsored in '04 and for forcing a vote on Jack Murtha's pull-out.They called it a "dirty trick". Well then, what do they call this? And Ted "Blowhole" Kennedy's and Hillary Clinton's speeches the last couple days made me want to puke. It seems that everytime a Democrat gets in front of a microphone they think they have to yell and get "passionate" when all it is is pandering to the entitlement crowd. Meh.

4 Uh...if Hastert's statement bears any relationship to what actually happened...then how did the felony provision get into the bill in the first place, given that Sensenbrenner's bill was a Republican written, Republican supported bill when it came out of his Republican dominated committee with almost all Republican votes? Face it--Repubs thought that the country WANTED harsh anti-immigrant measures (and some evidence says they were right, at the time). So they put the tough measures, with no guest worker or legalization into the bill. When the Catholic church and some other groups said--hey, this will criminalize the nun who gives shelter to a destitute Mexican family...the Repubs tried to downgrade it to misdemeanor. The Dems, for once not being stupid, said--hold up there, you guys are stuck with the hate-bill you passed. It is a more complicated story than the one you are telling, Howie. And how many times have Republicans stuck Democrats with a roadblock--because they wanted the issue for the elections? It's just smart legislating by the opposition. The majority got what it said it wanted--and then decided to try and change it. Dems are not going to help Repubs when they are behaving incompetently, and perhaps incoherently. And I think many Dems sincerely wanted NO criminality.

5 Personnaly the reason many Americans won't do these jobs is becuase they don't have to. I think a few of these welfare to work jobs should be this type. And if you can identify the father of little Susie welfare's kids put him in the field too to cover her expense. I've throw hay chopped thistles cut grass. But hey I draw the line at detassleing corn. Never been that desparate. Ranther than these guys have to sneak across to do the jobs and suck up out services for free I'd much rather they not have to cross illegally. If you have a job waiting I'm all for work so come on. But here in ILL some misdemeanors can become a felony. for instance battery if you have the same guy in court 3 times over and over it can become a felony. Or if there are aggravating circumstances a change can be eleaveted to a felony. I would support the same thing here. First time misdemeanor. But if the same guy gets caught over and over on a regular basis or say is here illegally and commits a serious crime then also I would support that. But just some guy trying to feed his kids it's a bit harsh. Get our people to put down the chips and sweat for about 12 hours and our medicare cost will go down too. But if not got to have workers.

We need workers yes but we can't hand out servicers for free forever and we also need some control. Maybe not total control of the border but a good balance. A guest worker bill could help.

In a time when Americans are all about ready to retreat (or never engage) from righteous battles going on around the world - from the cartoons of stupidity to Iraq and Iran - its good to see at least one segment of the American population can stand up for whats right. That was part of sensenbrenner's original REPUBLICAN bill. He thought that would work to bring out the base. Turns out he got it wrong. Democrats voted down (along with the pro-felony Repubs) an amendment to weaken it, but make no mistake--felony was a Republican idea, a Republican proposal, and it is the Republicans who will and should pay a political price for it.

15 Well, the Dems were voting to make it non-criminal at any level to be here. Combined with the repubs who wanted it to be a felony, they won. The Republican majority then had a choice--go back, and do a comprehensive bill, like the Senate was planning, or vote for this monstrosity. They chose to vote for this one, gambling that the Dems would be hurt by having voted no on immigration toughness. They guessed wrong. It's going to suck to watch Pete Wilson II hit the Repubs, bigger and harder this time. Hispanics are the WORST voters of any ethnic group, in terms of turnout, even when you control for income and education. But now....the sleeping giant has been awakened, and even Cubans are going to vote against Repubs in record numbers, I think. Not to mention other minorities. Oops...

What you're missing is not whether we can assimilate any prescribed number of people, but that assimilation becomes more slipshod as the numbers get bigger. You can't deny that assimilation is absolutely necessary to maintaining our national identity. Especially those who are here illegally; they will tend to huddle with those who will protect them and will not feel a part of our society because they know they're not. They don't mingle or interact and by this, they don't learn the language or customs. Those who protect them have a tendency to withdraw too because they know what they're doing is against our laws and there is a certain level of fear in getting caught. I don't think you ever read my response to you a few days ago when this subject was discussed. This current issue has no bearing our social programs. While you've spent a great deal of keyboard time telling us what is wrong with us, you have not given us your solution. So I'll give you mine in brief points: 1) First, secure the borders. There are a lot of honest, hard working people that come here and I think we should welcome them, but legally and with comensurate wages and to be certain they pay their fair share of taxes. After they renew and continue to be good, productive societal members they can be eligible for citizenship without a lot of hassel. 3) Lose the PC bull and start profiling. There is no good reason why honest people are refused admission and Taliban officials get to go to an ivy league school. 4)Screw the Democrats in their bid to issue regular licenses to anyone who wants them and to let people vote without ID. Issue the proper ID's and issue "specially marked" licenses to those who are working under the guest worker program. Can't prove citizenship? Well, sorry, you can't vote. 5) Punish "sanctuary" cities. 6) Punish corporations who hire illegals. 7) No social services to those who cannot prove they're here legally. (of course, we'll not ignore those who may be under threat of life and limb and need emergency medical help. But then they go right back to where they came from.) Start showing those who want to be here that being here is a priviledge; not a right. And that they'll be treated with respect if they respect our laws and we won't undermine their doing things right by being lax on everyone else who wants to sneak in. Sounds like a lot? It's not. And it's not unreasonable.

17 Yes there were right before the weren't. Yeah the pooch has been screwed. We tried. They did a good job turning it on it's head. Personlly I'd like for a guest worker to be able to come and work. Cross a the border like an ordinary person. Be able to go home the same way and visit. I'm not mean. Probably not going to happen now so this poor guy gets to keep on hiding and sneaking and getting screwed with no minimum wage no workers comp not seeing his family etc etc. He could have been better off if both sides had worked for a reasonable bill. 18 Most immigrant groups didn't want the Sensenbrenner bill, even with the amendment, so Dems made a smart parliamentary maneuver. It isn't often that they have figured out stuff like this, in advance, not believed today's polls, but thought about where the issue was heading over the next month or year. but this time, they got it right, and Republicans are on the hot seat now. Incidentally, I personally favor building the highest tech, tightest wall the world has ever seen on our border...and legalizing most of the 11 million that are here. From here on out, though, we control our borders. This is the land border with the greatest income disparity in the WORLD. In no other part of the world does a pretty poor country have this kind of land border with a very rich one. If we don't build a heck of barrier, they will keep coming. We need to have legal, controlled, safe immigration. If Jose and a coyote can get across, Ahmed and a bomb can get across, too.

But when they were seeking to downgrade it, if the Democrats wanted to really get something done and do the public servant work they swore to do, it was wrong for them to block that change and try to make their political counterparts looks like Satans. Maybe I'm interpreting you wrongly, but it sounds like you're defending the bad actions of the Democrats, when in fact they're both screwed up. The Democrats nor the Republicans even WANT to face this problem. They're behaving like children who don't want to clean their bedrooms as they pout and mess each others beds up when the American public is telling them they're tired of the mess.

I no longer respect or recognize the authority of the Federal government on any level, because by its collective refusal to perfom its duties to its citizens by giving more sway to the wishes of criminals and declared enemies of our nation than to We, the People. The government is absolutely corrupt from root to branch, and absolutely unreformable due to the mechanisms put in place to ensure continuity of that corruption. Voting is masturbation, because no honest person can ever be elected or appointed to any position of power; with rare exception, only criminals or those willing to sell out to criminals can attain power; this is demonstrable, incontrovertable fact. America is, or was, a Constituional Republic. The Constitution is the only law of the land; not the government, which would be imperialism, and not the demos, which would be mob rule. No citizen of the United States is Constitutionally bound to recognize any law, obey any directive of the government, or recognize the results of any ballot which contradicts the Constitution, but we are forced to by the threat of violence. I do not believe this is what was intended by the Founders. Soon we will be fighting illegals, muslims, and their liberal Quislings in the streets, and they will have the forces of the government on their side, because they have the power of Political Correctness, which always stands against the Constitution and those who uphold it. We are besieged by enemies, and those of us who are able will have to fight or surrender to slavery at worst and second-class-citizen status at best, which is just about the case now. Or we could just let ourselves and our families be killed by the subhuman savages. The only viable solution is that of 1776. We must arm ourselves and prepare to fight for our very survival, because we have nowhere to go and nobody to help us. Every loyal citizen should buy a military type rifle and at least one thousand rounds of ammunition, because as soon as the shooting starts, there will be no more to be found, except in the hands of illegals, muslims, and the government, of course. Prepare to fight or die; those are your choices.

I've been largely silent about the immigration issue because, frankly, I'm conflicted. But check out these immigration laws from Mexico. Draconian, to say the least. Thehomosayswhat:

Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country. This ban applies, among other things, to participation in demonstrations and the expression of opinions in public about domestic politics.

What?

UPDATE: No Speed Bumps says the Democrats have sold out the working class by supporting amnesty for illegals. I dunno. That kind of assumes the Ds cared in the first place....

4 Actually, Draconian immigration policies are the norm in the vast majority of nations on this planet - even Western Europe until relatively recently (past several decades). Many nations in the world Peter can not provide for all their people - and many of them use emmigration (often illegal) as a means for disposal and safety valve to maintain their own status quos. 20 years ago the argument was over 3-5 million illegals - now its over 8-11 milion (some say as many as 20 mil) - tomarrow it will be over 20-30 milion. As it stands now - the shit hits the fan when the next severe recession comes (inevitable) - and depending on the severity, it could be disasterous and violent. Make no mistake about it - here in NYC high immigration convienently and benignly allows for quiet discrimination against African Americans, Puerto Ricans (weird huh!) and other select groups (depends on who is doing the selecting). There is also a fair degree of discrimination between immigrant groups and legal/illegal status. all this in an economic environment that is extremely good! (though seldom reported for patisan political reasons). When the bubble bursts - watch out!

5 Amazing isn't it? ...that hundreds of thousands of people each year literally swim rivers, scale walls, suffer desert heat stuffed in closed container boxes, etc etc., all to get into the "GREAT SATAN" (ie. "country with the most corrupt administration in its history"). If I didn't know better, I'd say that this illustrates how tired and weak that condemnation of our country is. What's almost more amazing, is that there are literally MILLIONS of people who believe this Democrap about our nation and President Bush.

8 JJ May need that certificate soon - technically between civilian jobs (unemployed) - will retire soon from Mil Reserve after 27 years total Active/Reserve - got a good solid disability claim pending from LOD injury last Mil activation - hoping for 50% - but could take a long time. Not looking too hard for work - like a vacation - want something close to home - no commute - something mellow - not overly ambitious - modest pay ... 30K is fine (if pension comes thru (tax free!). Spend time working on restoring house - brought 2 years ago cheap - 1880 cottage set in heavily wooded hillside/park overlooking NY Harbor - big time gentrifying area - already doubled in value - fully restored expect 400%+ return. I'm busier now than when I was working for one incredibly corrupt Fed Agency. Spending less time on the net - except job search and computer home design projects. Weather is nice - lots to do - less time for blogs.

When I pointed out that it was the Democrats who were doing this, she was very surprised and didn't believe me. She does watch the nightly news so this is where I think she gets her information on every subject.

11 Two posts back, hondo centers on the other little mentioned aspects of illegal immigration. There are many 'moral' problems which are created from allowing unabated, unhindered illegal immigration. This isn't only bad for the US....its bad for MEXICO. Google Delinquency and Crime statistics for Mexico and you'll understand that to which I refer. Illegal immigration is having the same effect on Mexican families (in Mexico) as it had on innercity African American families here in the US in the 80 and 90's. The creation of millions of one parent households in Mexico in a relatively short period of time CANNOT BE A GOOD THING.

12 JJ - Ha ha No sons - one grown daughter - had custody - it was an experience doing it alone - she's the only woman I had paticence with and could tolerate! She dreads coming over 'cause I tend to put her to work - "lets gut the third floor - tear out that retaining wall - grab that chainsaw - drag these concrete blocks up the hillside" - stuff like that! She loves the pets though - cat, 3 raccoons, 1 possum - damn squirrels in the attic and walls! (lil' bastards keep tearing up the new insulation!). Tells me I need a small army of Mexicans! 13 Just reference to Hispanic immigration .... Mexico, Central America, South America are on a treadmill to nowhere for 200 hundred years now - they should have been by now on par with at least Europe as far a development - but it hasn't happened - and probably won't. Their own elites (left & right) are perfectly satisfied with their positions - and can always blame the US for their failures. What's different now is modern communications - down there they know its hopeless and the only real opportunity is here. I feel sorry for them - I like them - but .... We argue about the number 8-11 million - make no mistake about it - it can easily jump far beyond that! Right now anywhere between 100-150 million people south of that border would make the jump when the conditions ripen - and I don't mean here! When conditions worsen there! It will happen - its inevitable - and the consequences will be disasterous.

15 JJ Most Americans view immigration (legal and illegal) though the rose-colored glasses of American mythology - peoples wanting to come here for opportunity, advancement, freedom etc. etc. Its a two-sided coin - and Americans conveniently forget the other (ugly) side. Peoples are fleeing conditions where they come! FLEEING! Fleeing not just limited opportunity - but REAL poverty, disease, violence, oppression, discrimination (YES! non-whites discriminate massively) etc. Those conditions in many parts of the world will worsen and are as we speak. You can feel sorry for them (I do), but the sheer numbers are potentially staggering! I am not joking when I say the numbers of people who would flee to the US (don't use immigrate!) is in the hundreds of millions. The only thing that stands in the way is ease of access. Remember - we only have one significant border access - otherwise we are surrounded by oceans and Canada. I expect economic and political conditions south of the border to worsen - its almost like a freakin' cycle! They are coming - and it will increase even more dramatically - I would.

Populists Beware Of Immigration Reform?

America is a melting pot because people of varying races and backgrounds come to the U.S. and bring their culture, and they choose to learn about America and our way of life. Many immigrants have assimilated. That is what ties us together as a family. When there are millions of illegal immigrants who do not wish to assimilate and go about the proper way to immerse themselves in American culture, and become legal, they undoubtedly isolate themselves. Americans should not feel that, in order to bridge the divide to communicate with an exploding Latino population, that we must take Spanish. - Felicia Benamon (an American first, an Afro-American second)

Edward Gillespie, former chairman of the Republican National Committee in the 2004 election cycle, has a piece titled "Populists Beware" in the Opinion Journal today in obvious support for a temporary guest worker program (surprise - his firm, Quinn Gillespie & Associates, represents clients who support a temporary guest worker program). He warns Republicans that the GOP must not become an anti-immigration party, and he irrationally draws a connection between being "anti-illegal immigrant" and being "anti-immigrant".

According to Gillespie, Republicans in Congress must choose either a comprehensive immigration reform package including a guest-worker program or a narrowly focused border-security bill. He then offers that the former would improve homeland security, help our economy and build greater Republican majorities, but the latter, conversely, would ignore fundamental problems, hurt our economy and risk the party's majority status. To support his premise, Gellespie accurately points out that between 2000 and 2004, President Bush increased his support in the Hispanic community by nine percentage points. Had he not, John Kerry would be president today (Perish the mere thought).

While Gillespie certainly knows his business, and who am I to argue with a political expert, reading his entire piece convinces me that while many of his points are valid, he, like so many of those supporting the guest worker program, fails to look at the issue in a balanced perspective. There's a very big difference between those that have come to America legally, and those that sneak into the country illegally.

No matter how you cut it, those that cross our borders illegally are criminals, and the fact that the U.S. government has failed to protect our borders and has also failed to enforce the enforcement of our laws is itself also criminal. To further fail to enforce the laws that have been criminally ignored is simply encouraging more criminal behavior and the continued invasion of America by an what has clearly become and "army" of illegal aliens in more ways than one.

And while I'm blowing my top, why is it that I keep hearing from politicians and the news media, even Fox TV, that we can't simply throw out 12 million criminals? Why not? Every time one goes to the doctor, a hospital, a school, receives a traffic ticket, applies for any program or job, aren't all of these opportunities to arrest them and spirit them back to where they came from? Shouldn't this have already been done during the last ten years while the federal government has sat back and allowed the problem to now reach a crisis point?

Frankly, I'm getting damned tired of having to go through a bilinqual menu every time I call a business, tired of paying to support services for people that have invaded my country illegally (although I certainly support caring for them during a very brief few days while we are arranging their transportation out of the country), tired of seeing Mexican flags flying over the streets of America, tired of hearing people that barely can speak English tell me on television about all of their rights and telling me what we legal Americas have to do for them while they are trampling all over ours (we have to obey laws, pay taxes, and behave responsibly (as do my kids who are not allowed to skip school), and yes, I'm also very tired of seeing politicians place politics way in front of what's good for America.

1 If you look back in history, these so called illegal immigrants were here before any americans were!!! Read your history book guys. The english came over here and pushed the indians south and took thier land from them forming what is now the United States and the indians became Mexico. We took from them, go live the life that Mexicans have to live for 1 week, you'll never make it! I have been there and it is not easy! 2 April, Yes, I can see and have a much better idea of what life in Mexico must be like than many. However, ILLEGAL immigration lets the Mexican government off of the hook of fixin the Mexican economy and giving Mexicans an oppurtunity at home. Up here, the government has to make sure it doesn't pursue economy killing policies because what happens if the economy is driven into the ground? Where would all of our unemployed go? There are Mexican workers up here where I live. I talked to one last year who was tending bar at a local establishment. He is up here working, where are his wife and children? At home apart from him. Is that what the people of Mexico want? There is one other nation on earth in a similar position. Its biggest source of foreign currency is its labor force and that is not what the people want, but it is what they must deal with. I'm all for liberal immigration quotas but not for immigration law violation.

3 The problem is the quota system. Immigration was last reformed in 1986, a lot has happened since then. People are coming from different place for different reasons today. Rather than having a quota for each country, there should be one number that doesn't pay any attention to country of origin. I'm also not a big fan of the idea that it takes a decade for people to come to the US going through the proper channels - I think we could take a few years off that process with some new technology. As far as the guest worker/blue card program. It's a bad idea to limit people to only "agricultural" jobs. It's damn near immoral to condemn people to entry level jobs with no chance for advancement.

Bush and the liberals who have been, and are heading the GOP have been doing this the last few weeks. Gillespe is just the latest in a long line of liberal (we used to call them Rockerfeller) Republicans to call conservatives names. Liberals of both parties have no shame and not much honor.They play the race card at will. Bush and the "leaders" of the GOP are in the process of destroying the GOP. But we saw this happen in 1992 with another liberal Bush President. Remember Bill "won" with only 42% of the vote, while Bush pulled in 33%. This is not the first time; and will not be the last either.
