Open Thread: Olympic Sports You'd Like to See

In a previous post I rated the GAY, STRAIGHT, or METROSEXUAL aspects of selected Winter Olympic sports. Hilarity ensued, with the bonus that we were able to mortally offend a fullblown moonbat who shall remain nameless so as not to offend her life partner, Boris.

Commenter slug has requested an open thread for the sports we'd like to see introduced.

Please keep your posts at the customary PG-13 level. Unless they're really funny.

1 I would like to see the Snowball Fight added as a sport. Team USA could hide rocks in them when they go up against the Iranian team.

2 I want to see a real biathlon with shooters armed with 7.62mm NATO rifles hunting for caribou or elk. The team with the biggest rack wins the gold medal. And all the members of the male figure skating teams have to clean the animals shot by the biathlon teams. Now that I would like to see.

3 I'd like to see a sleding race like something out of Ben Hur, where the sledders need to "kill or be killed" as they travel at high speeds down a steep mountain slope. Athletes should be permitted to take as many drugs as needed. And there should be no rules, none. Last one standing gets the gold, and if there's anyone else alive, they can fight over the other two.

4 1) One of my favorites is one my buddies and I do at the beach house twice a year: a)empty several cases of beer; b) toss cans out into the yard; c) load/shoot .22 rifle*; d) whoever hits the most in row wins. Competition continues until we run out of ammo, until it gets too dark, or until everyone passes out. * Our place is secluded so a BB gun will work in a more populated area. 2)It would be pretty cool to dress up a bunch of competitors in those sumo wrestling outfits and just watch them fall down. That never gets old. 3)Anything where guys get hit in the sack. 4)Anything that could produce the new 'Agony of Defeat' guy. Any or all of these would mean higher ratings for NBC. However, I would keep the womens's figure skating. The only reason that gets high ratings is that men like to watch nearly naked 18 year olds with their leg over their own shoulder. NBC: call me.

5 I'd like to see "Polar Bear Cub Snatch". In this event the athletes (unarmed of course) must steal a cub while in the presence of its mother and carry it by hand over the finish line, 500 metres away. Points are awarded for the weight of the cub taken and the time taken to cross the finish line.

6 I'd like to see a more violent version of Ultimate Fighting Championship. No rules, in a cage till one man is completely unconcious. It would have clear winner, unlike the judged sports. The sport could also be used to solve international conflicts.

10 Ultimate Biathalon: instead of taking shots at targets, the various teams try to 'tag' each other. Snowboard Archery Catch: Snowboarders will attempt to catch arrow fired by expert archers while in the middle of elaborate jumps. Most arrows caught and still alive wins. Bobsled Chicken: Bobsleds are released at opposite sides of a very steep track and head right for each other at breakneck speeds. If one team hits the 'chicken switch' and bails, the other teams wins. In case of collision and death, it's a tie.

14 Heroic Dreamer: curling is probably a symbolic fertilization ritual. The "stones" represent spermatozoons competing to be first to inseminate the "target", or egg. Thus, curling is categorized as STRAIGHT, but also as LAME.

Blogburst Announcement - 'Stand Up For Denmark'

The Freedom's Zone international blogging community is encouraging all bloggers to help 'Stand Up For Denmark' by immediately writing a post on Christopher Hitchens' call for a demonstration at the Embassy of Denmark, between noon and 1 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 24.

Please be outside the Embassy of Denmark, 3200 Whitehaven Street (off Massachusetts Avenue) between noon and 1 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 24. Quietness and calm are the necessities, plus cheerful conversation. Danish flags are good, or posters reading "Stand By Denmark" and any variation on this theme (such as "Buy Carlsberg/ Havarti/ Lego") The response has been astonishing and I know that the Danes are appreciative. But they are an embassy and thus do not of course endorse or comment on any demonstration. Let us hope, however, to set a precedent for other cities and countries. Please pass on this message to friends and colleagues.

Please also post that for those who cannot attend the demonstration, they are encouraged to call and email the Danish embassy, and offer their support and appreciation for their standing up to freedom and the right of free speech that is so much a part of our Western culture:

The Arabs Parallel Universe - From An Arab/Muslim's Perspective

Rantings Of A Sandmonkey has a couple of interesting posts up that I'd go so far as to say offer important insight to non-Muslims on some prevalent opinions and the world view of many Arab/Muslims - from the advantage point of a moderate Arab/Muslim's perspective. In one of his previous posts a reader (Jeffrey) had left a comment describing a phenomenon that he had noticed over the past 3 years of viewing middle-eastern news, something he referred to as the A.P.U., (Arab Parallel Universe).

Sandmonkey writes that the A.P.U. was created by Arabs to explain to themselves why they are in the rut they have been for so long, while also glorifying their personal victories against a world that is always conspiring against them. In the A.P.U., events that happen in our real universe also occur, except that the fashion of their occurrence and their outcome are very different then what we- in the real universe-know them to be. In referring to the commenter he writes:

It amazed me that he came to that conclusion, since it brilliantly summed up something that I have been trying to describe for years. I immediately told all my family and friends about it and upon their realization that we are all citizens of the A.P.U., they started giving me examples and evidence of that geographic phenomenon. In this post I will try to explain some of the rules of the A.P.U., and list examples of them for the sake of explaining to the rest of the world the rules of our very fun parallel Universe.

You can read all of his commentary at his site, but here is a summary and conclusion; the 7 political rules of the APU are:

1) Arabs never make mistakes, and they rarely lose wars.
2) The Zionists and the Americans are always to blame for everything that is wrong in the APU.
3) If there is any credit at all that can be contributed to Arabs in any way, they will take it.
4) Good leadership is inversely related to how US-friendly a leader is!
5) Any media that is not the official state-owned media is filled with Zionist, Jewish, American, Christian, imperialist, anti-arab influences and they LIE ALL THE TIME!
6) There is really no need for elections in the APU, because Presidents and rulers are presidents and rulers for life.
7) The only viable alternative candidate to the current leader or president is this current leader or presidentÂ’s son.

In a follow-up, today he posts another comment from a reader, Elengil, who he says he'd so have a crush on for her brain alone if it weren't for the fact that she was already involved. It was purely in response to America's foreign policy; and it was primarily about our monetary and military support of Israel. many others say that they must fight America for its support of 50 years of Israel's terrorism against the Palestinian and other Mideastern people. What would be the reaction of Americans to any nation who fired Cruise missiles and dropped thousands of bombs on America? After Clinton's bombing of Afghanistan, the Taliban promised revenge against America. September 11 may be that revenge. We bombed Iraq after it invaded Kuwait, yet we supported Saddam Hussein with money and arms when he warred with Iran. In contrast, we continued to monetarily and militarily support Israel even after it invaded Lebanon and killed tens of thousands of Lebanese civilians. We support the Zionist state even though it tortures thousands of political prisoners in its jails. American support enabled Israel to ethnically cleanse itself of 700,000 Palestinians. Bush says we must strike down terrorists wherever they are in the whole world, but he has shared tea and crumpets with Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, one of the world's leading most brutal and bloodthirsty terrorists. Sharon committed a number of crimes against humanity, among them the massacre of 2,000 men, women and children in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon. Mr. Bush did not strike Mr. Sharon, instead he toasted him. But why must the media and government create this huge, absurd lie about why we were attacked on September 11. This Big Lie is, of course, meant to hide an obvious truth. Its purpose is to keep Americans from associating this attack with our Israeli policy. If that happens people might begin to wonder if it is in our true interest to having given Israel countless billions of our dollars. They might begin to wonder if it is good for America to serve as the Israeli's shock troops and techno killers in attacks on Israel's enemies such as Iraq. So, the unvarnished truth is that we suffered the terror of September 11 because of our support of the criminal policies of Israel. We have let our country be controlled by a foreign lobby that has worked against the best interests of the American people. Israel has time and again proven it is not really our friend. It has conducted covert terrorist activities against America such as the Lavon affair in Egypt. It has deliberately attacked the USS Liberty with unmarked fighters and torpedo boats causing 174 American casualties in an attempt to blame Egypt and garner American support during the war of 1967. It has spied on us and stolen our greatest secrets, such as in the Jonathan Pollard affair. It has sold secret American technologies to the Communist Chinese. It has stolen nucleur materials from the United States. It has tricked America into bombing other nations such as in the attack on Libya in 1986. I could go on and on about Israel's treachery against the America. And now, under guidance of the Israel Lobby and the Jewish controlled media, the Zionists are preparing America to strike a massive blow against all of Israel's mortal enemies in a global war. They are already talking about not only bombing, but invading and occupying whole nations such as Libya, Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Such would spawn a huge wave of hatred and retribution against America from all over the planet. The costs of such a war would cost the American people untold billions of dollars and could well cause the deaths of thousands of Americans. Finally, such a war would not end terrorism, but only spawn more acts of terror against us.

Pappy Boyington

The University of Washington, in response to a proposal to erect a monument for decorated WWII Marine pilot Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, decided that they didn't need "any more monuments to rich white men" and that they weren't too keen on the idea of putting up a monument that, you know, dealt with like, war and killing and stuff. Just for reference, they wanted to have work started (not necessarily completed) by Jan 11, 2008 - the 20th anniversary of his death. Read through the minutes, fascinating stuff.

This is the current response from the student council president, who I am sure, is getting deluged right now. I have to give the guy credit - it's a mature response in what must be a trying situation. He doesn't dodge or spin, he's taking responsibility - I think there are a number of DC denizens who would do well to heed his example.

The blog news and the draft minutes that were posted are inaccurate. First, Ashley Miller's statements were highlighting, as a point of information, that the majority of our statues are white males, which was an issue previously addressed last year, this is not in any way meant to go against Colonel Boyington. It was noted by the sponsor, Andrew Everett, about Boyington's heritage later. Jill Edwards made here statements as an individual, and it should not be assumed she speaks for all students. Karl Smith wanted to honor his service as a whole (he risked his life, endured 20 months in a POW Camp) in an effort to bring more support from a number of students who do not morally agree with war. These statements are in public discourse that has been and will always be at the University of Washington to educate on the questions and issues of our society.
I would also like to remind you that as ASUW President I cosponsored this bill to create a memorial, it failed by one vote, and a good majority of those who voted against it wanted more inclusion of other alumni who were combat veterans who earned the Medal of Honor. This week a new resolution to that effect is being drafted and introduced. In the meantime the ASUW supports veterans in other ways, currently we are supporting state legislation that will hopefully pass and guarantee veterans tuition waivers. In the end, the buck stops here, I would appreciate further comments to be made to me. Please do not participate or condone the hate-filled comments and phone calls made toward individuals in our student government. It has been appalling to see what is being said to people. I too am nauseated.

10 Why not honor Col "Pappy" Boyington? He was a man of unquestionable courage, and he was a graduate of the U. of Washington. It's a shame the students at your university can't get past their immature biases against a man who was willing to commit the ultimate sacrifice. Unfortunately, I believe their lack of respect has it's roots in a real restriction of ideas on your campus. I attended a System Safety course two years ago and was appalled with the limitations of free speech. Your bookstore at the HUB only displayed anti-conservate and anti-Republican books. When asked, "where are the conservative books," the manager stated, "we have some." However, he couldn't produce one at the time. By restricting the debate of ideas, you've lowered your university to the standards that were common in the "old Soviet Union" and many Islamic countries today. You would much rather honor a mass-murder like Abdul Jamal than someone willing to fight for your freedoms. The attitude of the UW Student Senate is a disgrace as a whole. I might expect riots on your campus should an honor be erected just like the manufactured riots going on today in Islamic countries over a few political cartoons--or maybe the bulk of your student body isn't reflected in the UW Student Senate. 14 Her blog is rather revealing as to the type of person she is and is becoming. She doesn't seem particularly bright. Firstly, I would think a prime rule of public stupidity preparation is to make sure that you do not have your cell phone number and home address publicly posted on your blog. Suggesting that we kill someone simply because they have a different view, even if done in jest, is horrifying. Suggesting that we never enter into armed conflict, as appealing as it may be is an unrealistic position . War is a terrible thing which should be avoided, but can not be avoided at the price of freedom. Agree or disagree with the current conflict, it can not be denied that World War II was a necessary conflict. Making blanket statements shows a lack of willingness or ability to think. 34 The problem here is that the children involved making the comments are not old enough to have experienced the horror of WWII and are simply ignorant of the historical barbarity of the Army of the Empire of Japan prior to and during WWII. College children, by definition, are a privileged lot and sometimes look down their noses at anyone less fortunate (as evidenced by T's disdainful comment regarding McDonald employees). Whether Boyington deserves a statue should not be a matter of race or class - the sole issue that should have been considered is whether he brought more honor and recognition to the UW than other graduates. Disqualifying him because of his race, or because he was heroic in battle against an enemy trying to destroy our country only demonstrates the ignorance of the persons attempting to disqualify him.

European Islamists Counter Danes With Cartoons Depicting Hitler, Holocaust

A European Islamic organization called the Arab European League has countered the recent cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed with cartoons of their own, questioning the Holocaust and showing Anne Frank in bed with Hitler. This statement explains their rationale:

After the lectures that Arabs and Muslims received from Europeans on Freedom of Speech and on Tolerance. And after that many European newspapers republished the Danish cartoons on the Prophet Mohammed. AEL decided to enter the cartoon business and to use our right to artistic expression.
Just like the newspapers in Europe claim that they only want to defend the freedom of speech and do not desire to stigmatise Muslims,we also do stress that our cartoons are not meant as an offence to anybody and ought not to be taken as a statement against any group, community or historical fact.
If it is the time to break Taboos and cross all the red lines, we certainly do not want to stay behind.

While I'm reproducing one of the cartoons below in the spirit of fairplay, I certainly don't endorse the message. more...

I understand how people can be insulted. We split religion and the state back in the 1700s while islam is just coming to terms with this. Islamic societies have a hard time with bottom-up power structures, meaning they are usually hierarchical and you obey the book and your leaders. I have great iranian friends. They live a double life within the confines of their house and out on the streets. its sad to see them suffer having to behave in certain ways just because a book written 1500 years ago tells you you have to do that. it's gonna take a lot of understanding for uneducated muslims to understand that if you were born in china you had no choice being buddhist or toaist and that islam is not the only religion out there and salvation is only possible via islam..ditto that with evangelical christians....

13 I think the Hitler-Ann Frank connection is ridiculous but, it is within the realm of free speech and expression, and I much prefer this approach as opposed to the call for violence, which is unacceptable and should be dealt with in the harshest of ways by the West. Whoever advocated violence should be sent back to whatever country they came from, or if they were born in the West, they should have their citizenship revolked and sent to whatever is the country of their heritage. And before you say anything, reacting to the threat of violence is quite different than the one who proposed violence as a solution, and you know who you are.

23 An insulting cartoon doesn't take much effort (see Hitler screwing a jewish child) if it doesn't bear some semblance of similarity to the object of its ridicule. Hitler, for instance, is considered to have had an aversion to sex of any kind. (It is theorized he was a homosexual in denial). So depicting him molesting a young jewish child is simply gratuitous, and not very clever. That is in stark contrast with the depictions of Mohammed with an exploding head, because muslims are terrorists. That, you can argue, is clever. Also, this Hitler/Ann Frank cartoon should be seen in light of the fact that Mohammed himself was a pedophile (his "wife" was only 12 years old). What we have here, therefore, is an obvious case of projection at a very subconcious level by our muslim cartoonist. Pedophilia, like jihad, runs like an unbroken thread through his religion all the way back to its founder. Subconsciously, it appears in their cartoons. As a side note, young boys and homosexuality are are still very popular in the muslim world given their women are completely hidden from view under burkas. I had a Paki (Pashtun) friend in college who used to laugh about male-on-male gang rapes at university.

They played both the Muslims and the Europeans like a fiddle. There will be multiple attacks on US soil, most likey some will involve a light nuclear weapon. Then, right on cue, the Americans will pile in their cars and drive furiously down the highways with little American flags fluttering from their autos. The plots of September 11th were not hatched in a cave in Afghanistan, but, in the more sinsister halls of the Council of Foreign Relations in New York, and, Darvos, Switzerland. Chicago, beware. Larry Silverstein, the jew who bought the entire World Trade Center complex, just two months prior to September 11th, for $250 million, has recently bought a very tall building in Chicago. Silvestein made $3.5 BILLION dolldars off of the insurance after the attacks. How convenient. Jordanian editors arrested over Danish cartoon

From BBC News:

Two Jordanian newspaper editors who published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad have been arrested.
Jihad Momani and Hisham Khalidi are accused of insulting religion under Jordan's press and publications law.

Here's what Momani wrote to accompany the cartoon:

"Muslims of the world be reasonable.
What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony in Amman?"

Or a so-called moderate Islamic government that arrests editors for printing cartoons.

I was disappointed that such a statement would be made following their complete silence over the cartoons in our own papers and the tax payer funded "art" we've seen in recent years. I would have felt only marginally better had the State Department also condemned the behavior displayed by those making threats. But no mention was made in that respect. They made it sound like our free speech is more valid than theirs. When someone is killed over this, many will blame the cartoonists and not the killers. And the state department has inadvertantly propped them up by trying to "score points".

6 The U.S Government reaction to this should be unwavering and staunch, we should withdraw our diplomats from Jordan, and any other U.S asset in the area, cut off aid (if any) and make Jordan aware that we will not stand by and watch them execute 'apostates' and suppress freedom of speech, or press if we're serious about spreeding democracy in the middle-east. I am no fan of the Democrats but this administration has shown time and time again, it will turn a blind eye to some countries in order to get the results it wants ie: North Korea: brutal oppressive regime, China same, but sells us cheap goods. Iran radical fanatics in power, dangerous. Saudi Arabia, same but sells us oil. The problem in turning a blind eye, is eventually they'll poke the other one out too, as most of these countries rely on our money as much as we rely on their products we should hit them in the pocket. Unfortunately the American people have no stomach for paying extra for products, in order to punish some of these regimes financially.

9 There is the possibility that the arrests in Jordan may be more protective in nature - along with cooling of elements of society that the islamists they to sway. A court proceeding takes time and sometimes allows for a sensible debate to develop over the issue at hand. I'll give the Jordanian govt the benefit of a doubt on this one - they tend to be the odd man out in the mideast looking to walk a fine line.

Its legal and in keeping with the ideals of free speech. And its pretty common in the West directed at many un-named groups and individuals. Muhammad Cartoon Rage Via Email (Updated)

Although we have an email privacy policy (at Hyscience - where originally posted) that assures readers that their emails are never published, we have a long-standing tradition that the policy DOES NOT APPLY TO DEATH THREATS. The majority of death threats that we get are to us personally, and some of those have been posted in the past.

However, today we received an email from Belani Bulasin in Turkey, that applies to all of us "blasphemous Westerners." His English is better than what we've seen from most jihadist emails in the past, so one would assume that he is bright and educated.

While he's certainly entitled to his opinion of whether or not the images of Muhammad should or should not have been posted, making death threats to individuals or a civilization, or to any persons of any group of any size in between, is inappropriate and unacceptable behavior in today's world.

This applies to everyone, even those who by choice or happenstance live in a stoneage culture, and follow a violent and intolerant religion that worships someone they view as a prophet, but who is viewed by much of the world as the wellspring of terrorism.

Since Belani's message applies to the entire Western civilization, and is indicative of the intolerant, violent, hateful, and murderous religion that he follows, radical Islam, a belief that follows jihad and seeks world domination, and submission to Islam by non-radical Muslims and non-Muslims alike, we feel it very appropriate to post his email here:

6 I knew that many Muslims engaged in a lot of hypocrisy and double standards, but this is just stupendous. Calling Imams preaching hate and calling for the destruction of entire countries "respected Islamic scholars" and cartoonists "blasphemers who should be beheaded" is really, really stupid. The only voice of reason coming out of the Muslim world I've heard on this comes from a Canadian Mulsim. He condemned the cartoons, which is his right, but balanced it with a condemnation of the violence: "The protests in the Middle East have proven that the cartoonist was right," said Tarek Fatah, a director of the Muslim Canadian Congress. "It's falling straight into that trap of being depicted as a violent people and proving the point that, yes, we are."

8 Here was my response to the first comment that I sent to the email address you provided. I read your threatening message about dog Â“urinating on the side of a mosqueÂ” at Hyscience. IÂ’m sure you find that these images of Mohammed are offensive. No one likes to see their religion denigrated. I certainly do not like seeing Christ being pissed on in Â“artÂ” (as has happened here in the U.S.). I can certainly understand protesting it (though it may be unwise as it draws attention to the blasphemy that might otherwise go unnoticed) or boycotting the persons who produced it. But, to threaten to kill the persons who produce it and to threaten to kill all of their countrymen and all Europeans and all of the West Â– is plainly evil. It is also pathetic. People who overreact to every perceived offence are not people who are confident of their position. They are people who are afraid the images will resonate because there is some truth to them. In the West we do not bluster. We do not because a person who blusters and does not follow though is a person who will be ignored thereafter. In the Mideast (and apparently Turkey Â– despite its desires to join the West) this logical rule of society does not seem to apply. Al Qaida threatens imminent attack on the U.S. for years and does to produce Â– and yet you still put faith (an hope) in their pronouncements. Baghdad Bob says the Americans have not entered Baghdad and despite the American tanks in the background Arabs keep believing him until they see SaddamÂ’s statue fall. Your threats are bluster. 18 Actually, I'm not that crazy about hate speech or hate crimes laws. It seems to come to close to 'thought crimes'. And I say screw political correctness, if I have an opinion I am going to let it fly. I do believe they were meant to counteract juries who would acquit based on their own bigotry and racism as so often happened in the past. I'm not sure how well it works or if the ends justify the means. Who said I was a "lefty". You must not know much about Christian fundamentalism, I grew up with it as a Southern Baptist. Do you not see parallels between the two? I'll admit we don't have a theocracy in the US as many Muslim countries do but there are similiarities in their mindset. It's called "straight thinking" also known as orthodoxy. People are told what to believe and to not ask questions, it's been going on for centuries. I don't think it's unreasonable to have a problem with that if you cherish freedom of thought and religion. I also have a problem with hypocrisy.. giant mega-churches and preacher's salaries, limos....how does any of that fit in with Jesus' teachings on the love of money?

I'm trying to figure out just what the heck he is alluding to. I have never been subjected to the kind of "orthodoxy" he is referring to. And the last time I checked(which was last Sunday) you can get up and leave, not go to church or pray, or basically do anything you want to vis-a-vie the Baptist Churches I have belonged to.
