Or The Democratic “Culture of Corruption” Revealed. I’ve been waiting to say that.
Washinton Post : Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-La.), the target of a 14-month public corruption probe, was videotaped accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from a Northern Virginia investor who was wearing an FBI wire, according to a search warrant affidavit released yesterday.Line him up with the rest of the crooks. Like I said before, Politician often equals crook.A few days later, on Aug. 3, 2005, FBI agents raided Jefferson's home in Northeast Washington and found $90,000 of the cash in the freezer, in $10,000 increments wrapped in aluminum foil and stuffed inside frozen-food containers, the document said.

In two years nobody is going to remember this guy's name. I'd wager that even the people in his district won't remember him. This relative non-event will not change the anti-corruption platform for '08 because not one person running for office would be dumb enough to try and leverage such a non-memorable thing to their advantage.
And, if you think that's hypocritical, you're either young or extremely ignorant. What's more hypocritical is the fact that back in the early 90s the Dems were in exactly the same sleazy stew pot that the Republicans are in right now, and that in another dozen years or so the Republicans are going to be the ones running the "anti-corruption" campaigns against the Democrats again, just like they did a dozen years ago.
The reason the republicans are in trouble in relation to corruption is quite simple: people with very big mouths like Tom DeLay engaged in highly suspect behavior and now, because they combined bluster and ethical fence-riding, they've become a very visible liability for their party.
It's not that one group is necessarily composed of more corrupt people than the other, it's that the opportunity goes to the people in power, and that in this case the people who took that opportunity happened to do it in very flagrant, high-profile ways. They're not WORSE, they're more visible.

This same guy was busted during Katrina for using national guardsmen and equipment to help get himself to his own house to grab some personal stuff. This was at the same time that 10s of thousands of people were looking for some leadership and were in grave danger. He's a real loser.

I'll pretty much guarantee it's not. Politics is about popularity and making flashes in the pan right before the election. People like Cunningham are memorable for the sheer scope of the crime, and DeLay is memorable, even if he's acquitted, because of his big mouth prior to the indictment. Jefferson is a nobody outside his district. Without that focus, he's pretty much useless as a political tool.
Ironically, with Richard's revelation, it seems to me he's probably one of the worst kinds of politicians. At least Cunningham and DeLay did work for their constituents. This guy, on the other hand, appears to have been there for little more than his own personal gain. It's ironic that he's probably so much worse for having focused on it, but that focus is exactly what will detach him in people's minds because he didn't do anything to make himself memorable.
If there's one thing you can count on in an election, though, it's usually that the best man will only win if he got lucky. Rational arguments are not that effective in the modern world compared to mudslinging and cross-charging, unfortunately.
They MIGHT be able to leverage it later this year to an extent, but even that I'd doubt. He's just not visible enough to make a good target.

I would agree that it's not a material thing, but I would disagree that it's not a valid concept. During the early 90s the Democrats defined it fairly clearly through their bribes and pandering, and the Republicans have since refined it to a political art form by organizing K-Street into little more than a temple market for people looking to buy and peddle influence.
While there probably isn't an inherent culture driving it, once the corrupt solidify to a certain extent through appointments and monetary connections, there is a cultural aspect of corruption to the social network that develops.

These politicians, these elite self-aggrandizing, "I know what's good for you better than you do", ivory-tower intellectuals are far, far too powerful. And while the conservative base in this country is showing some honest-to-goodness anger at what their elected officials are doing, the Democrats are circling the wagons and propping up halos over each others heads.
Just the whole immigration debate between them is enough to make one puke; rying to one-up each other on who's the most compassionate in the hopes they'll get their votes on down the road. No one seems to know that the amnesty of 1986 never ended. It was extended and expanded for 15 years and people can still apply for amnesty under that legislation even today. So just who do they think they're fooling with all this new legislation?
What this is, is just another quick fix for the current bad Social Security system. There were 380,000 births in the US to illegal aliens in 2002, accounting for nearly 10 percent of all births in the United States [from the Center for Immigration Studies]. What do you think it is now? They want these kids to shore up Social Security for the next few decades and at least to get through the retirement of the boomers. What happens when the explosion of illegal kids retire? Think the current politicians give a damn?

While we're making our laws more lax for them, they're passing new laws saying that if you want to move there, don't ever expect to be anything more than a second-class citizen. What amazes me it that this seems to be news to some. Willie Jefferson has been a crook for some time. This is small potatoes. The last bride he took was $400,000 from some Louisville people. They pleaded guilty. He says everyone is after him because he is black. Blacks in La say he shouldn't have to resigh because white have been taking brides for years. And Murtha has done this for one reason only, political gain. Murtha's reason for prejudging this case is his claim that the alleged crime was committed due to over-extension of the military.“It’s much worse than was reported in Time magazine,” Murtha, a Democrat, former Marine colonel and Vietnam war veteran, told reporters on Capitol Hill.
“There was no firefight. There was no [bomb] that killed those innocent people,” Murtha explained, adding there were “about twice as many” Iraqis killed than Time had reported.
Regardless of the outcome of Courts Martial investigating these Marines, Jack Murtha has exposed himself as a festering puswart on the buttocks of the House of Representatives.
Jack Murtha has abused his position as a US Representative and deserves censure by the House, at the very least. Murtha's past military service does not in any way excuse this gross misconduct.

I've never agreed with John Murtha (big time warhawk) but I've always had respect for the uniform and I've always found military men to be stand-up honest guys. Murtha is a former Marine Colonel so he speaks from a position of knowledge when making comments against our continued occupation of Iraq.

Whether you are for the Iraq War or not, that is not the question here. Murtha's remarks about Marines killing in cold blood is the most despicable use of an incident for political gain. If in fact when a report comes out that verifies his remarks, what gives him the right to inflame the populace by prematurly blurting this from his pulpit. One small point: innocent until proven guilty is not binding on the speech of members of Congress, or anyone except those directly involved in the judicial system. Members of Congress give their opinions about ongoing legal proceedings with great regularity. For example, when Newt was in the minority, and a Democrat was under investigation. Or, when Susan Smith had just been accused of killing her children, and Newt blamed it on Democratic values. Or when Richard Nixon, in the middle of Manson's trial, told reporters Manson was guilty. Or, when Enron broke. The list is endless.
So your point is: Murtha should be censured for...what exactly? speaking out on a tragic incident?
OK...because the first amendment shouldn't apply to members of Congress.
Time to rethink that, methinks.

Murtha's comments were clearly designed in an emotional manner to create an outcry. If he'd merely stated the basic facts, that would be one thing, but he:
1. Politicized a tragedy.
2. Took on the role of Judge, Jury and Executioner before the military even had a chance to accuse and try anybody themselves.
I imagine you criticized Bush - and rightly so - when he did similar things with 9/11, Katrina, etc. Now it's time to see if you can put your money where your mouth is and prove that you really are "better" than the blind Bush devotees. Murtha screwed up, so hold him accountable even though it means weakening "your party".

But then Murtha's talk is fodder for the enemy in a time of war. I wouldn't call for his censure, but I do think his motives stem from more than just patriotism or a concern for the troops. I do think he has a chip on his shoulder because his ideas were rejected by this administration. He's a proud man and now he picks his issues carefully for maximum impact, maybe too proud, and his speech about the troops "living hand to mouth" and being "broken" and "demoralized" was over the top. The vast majority of the troops denounce his assertions.
The voters will speak when it's time for his re-election. If New Jersey constituents think he speaks well for them, then so be it. I personally wouldn't vote for him.

Just be careful what you send to him as all mail for these inmates gets prescreened. Anything with a threat in it has to be investigated by the FBI which would waste man hours, and an overly enthusiastic person could find himself fined. As for the junk mail, be careful there too! Adding someone's name to a mailing list without their permission is a criminal offense too! I do like the idea of flooding him with mail letting him know how you feel though!

Turns out that Moussaoui missed out on the Death Penalty by one vote. I pretty much agree with Ace's explicative.
WAPO : Only one juror stood between the death penalty and Zacarias Moussaoui and that juror frustrated his colleagues because he never explained his vote, according to the foreman of the jury that sentenced the al-Qaeda operative to life in prison last week.Also see Allahpundit at Hot Air.The foreman, a Northern Virginia math teacher, said in an interview that the panel voted 11 to 1, 10 to 2 and 10 to 2 in favor of the death penalty on three terrorism charges for which Moussaoui was eligible for execution. A unanimous vote on any one of them would have resulted in a death sentence.

You are required during voir dire (jury selection questioning) to disclose if you have any moral objection to imposing the death sentences. Those that do are automatically rejected. However, some people who do will simply lie so that they can throw a "wrench" in the system and impose their minority view on the others. I don't think their should be a required unanimity for death sentences for this very reason -- it's too easy for a liar to overturn a just sentence. A 9-3 vote should be adequate. I'd even go for a 10-2. But unanimous 12 is just asking for "conscientous" objectors to rig the system.

I'm not defending the guy, but Ambien mixed with other drugs that cause drowsiness can really do a number on you. You can walk around for hours doing strange things and honestly have no recollection of what occured. I don't think he's lying, but he was irresponsible. If I recall correctly, Ambien is a controlled substance,(class 4?), and a hypnotic, but not a narcotic.

I feel bad for anyone who struggles with addiction. And he has trouble with depression too. But I do have a problem with the events of the night. Capitol hill Police cleared the scene and took him home? They simply acted as enablers. I know that "membership has its priviledges" but this is ridiculous.
Considering the volitile atmosphere of politics these days too, I'm not inclined at all to believe that a prominent Republican would have received the same level of compassion that Kennedy has from both sides of the aisle.
